Inspection

When the engine is shut off, the pressure change in the fuel tank by the ambient temperature is monitored by NVLD and when the engine is started, ECM judges whether there is a leak or not through the monitored data. If a leak is detected, ECM displays DTC P0455 or P0456.

Leakage Test with FTPS (Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor)

If a leak is detected by NVLD, leakage test with FTPS is performed more than 3~5 times to check tank system components. This test is only for production line or service shop to check where the real cause (NVLD or fuel system) of DTC P0455 or P0456 is.

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
  2. Connect the GDS to Data Link Connector (DLC).
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Select "Vehicle, Model year, Engine, System".
  5. Select "Vehicle S/W Management".
  6. Select "Inspection / Test".
  7. Select "Evap Leak Test".
  8. Perform the test in accordance with the illustrations below.

  1. Turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the auxiliary battery 12 (V) negative (-) terminal.
  2. Lift the vehicle.
  3. Remove the rear muffler hanger (A).
  4. Remove the rear suspension damper (A).
  5. Disconnect the vapor tube quick connectors (A) and ventilation hoses (B).
  6. Separate the canister from auxiliary canister by loosening the canister mounting bracket mounting bolts (A).
  7. Remove the canister bracket mounting bolts (B).
  8. Remove the canister protector (C).
  9. Remove the canister (A) by loosening the canister bracket mounting bolts (B).
  10. Remove the auxiliary canister (A) by removing the nuts (B) and disconnecting the ventilation hoses (C).

Scheme 158: Inspection
  1. Check for the following items visually. Cracks or leakage of the canister Loose connection, distortion, or damage of the vapor hose/tube A: Canister <--> Atmosphere (NVLD module and Fuel Tank Air Filter) B: Canister <--> Intake Manifold (PCSV) C: Canister <--> Fuel Tank

Mechanical inspection

  1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
  2. Disconnect the NVLD connector.
  3. Remove the NVLD.
  4. Connect the hose (A) to the canister hose connected port as below.
  5. After immersing the hose (A) in water, Apply more than 6 mbar (positive) pressure to Atmosphere port (B).
  6. If the NVLD is normal, many bubbles will indicate large leak.

Note. Allowable internal leakage of 0.35 g/hr at 3 mbar will show as one bubble every second (approximately).

Electrical inspection

  1. Connect power supply line and ground line to the NVLD terminals as below.
  2. Measure current between the NVLD terminal 1 and battery (+) terminal during NVLD switch open.
  3. Measure current between the NVLD terminal 1 and battery (+) terminal during NVLD switch closed.
  4. Measure current between the NVLD terminal 2 and battery (+) terminal during NVLD switch open.
  5. Check the current is within the specification.

Note. NVLD switch is normal open. When applying more than 6 mbar (Positive) pressure to canister port, switch is closed.
