Note. Steps 1-3 are for A/T models. For M/T models, go to step 4.
- Check Power Circuit - Turn ignition off. Disconnect inhibitor switch wiring harness connector. (Scheme 39) Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between inhibitor switch connector terminal No. 3 (Green wire) and body ground. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Check Output Signal Circuit - Turn ignition off. Disconnect A/T control unit wiring harness connector. Check continuity between inhibitor switch connector terminals No. 4 (Red/Green wire) and 6 (Red/Green wire) and A/T control unit terminal No. 19 (Red/Green wire). If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Check Inhibitor Switch - Disconnect inhibitor switch shift linkage. Turn ignition off. Using an ohmmeter, check for continuity at inhibitor switch harness connector as follows: With gear selector in Park, continuity should be present between connector terminals No. 3 (Green wire) and 4 (Red/Green wire). With gear selector in Reverse, continuity should be present between connector terminals No. 3 and 5 (Green/White wire). With gear selector in Neutral, continuity should be present between connector terminals No. 3 and 6 (Red/Green wire). With gear selector in Drive, continuity should be present between connector terminals No. 3 and 7 (Yellow/Blue wire). With gear selector in "2", continuity should be present between connector terminals No. 3 and 8 (Pink/Black wire). With gear selector in "1", continuity should be present between connector terminals No. 3 and 9 (Purple/White wire). If continuity is not as specified, replace inhibitor switch. If continuity is as specified, reconnect shift linkage. Check inhibitor switch continuity again. If continuity is not as specified, adjust shift linkage. If continuity is as specified, disconnect system harness connectors and inspect for damage or corrosion. Check ECM pins and terminals for damage or corrosion. Repair as necessary and retest. NOTE: Steps 4-6 are for A/T models. For M/T models, go to step 1.
- Check Ground Circuit - Turn ignition off. Disconnect neutral position switch wiring harness connector. (Scheme 40) Check continuity between connector terminal No. 4 (Black wire) and body ground. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Check Input Signal Circuit - Leave ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. Check continuity between switch connector terminal No. 2 (Green/White wire) and ECM harness connector terminal No. 22. If continuity is present, go to next step. If continuity is not present, repair harness or connectors as necessary.
- Check Component - Ensure neutral position switch is not damaged or contaminated. Check neutral position switch and ECM harness connectors for damage, corrosion or pushed-out pins. Repair if necessary. If no problems are found, replace neutral position switch.
