Engine Controls - Tests W/o Codes: Other Honda Odyssey I

ENGINE WILL NOT START

  1. Check spark and fuel systems as outlined in «BASIC TESTING»(ref-16061) and «SYSTEM/COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-16064) articles.
  2. Test ECM power and ground circuits.
  3. Check TDC/CKP/CYP sensors for proper operation.
  4. Check ignition output circuits.

DIFFICULT COLD START

  1. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor circuit for proper operation.
  2. Check Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor circuit for proper operation.
  3. Check TDC/CKP/CYP sensor circuits for proper operation.
  4. Check fast idle valve for proper operation.

ROUGH IDLE WHEN WARM

  1. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve for proper operation.
  2. Check Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor for proper operation.
  3. Check fuel injectors for proper operation.
  4. Check EGR system for proper operation.

IDLE RPM HIGH WHEN WARM

  1. Check idle adjusting screw setting.
  2. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve for proper operation.
  3. Check fast idle valve for proper operation.
  4. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor for proper operation.
  5. Check vacuum hose connections.
  6. Check A/C signal circuit.

IDLE RPM LOW WHEN WARM

  1. Check idle adjusting screw setting.
  2. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve for proper operation.
  3. Check fuel injector circuit.
  4. Check A/C signal circuit.
  5. Check oil pressure switch for proper operation.
  6. Check A/T position signal.
  7. Check Electrical Load Detector (ELD).
  8. Check lock-up control solenoid circuit (if equipped).

STALLING DURING WARM-UP

  1. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve for proper operation.
  2. Check fast idle valve for proper operation.
  3. Check fuel system for proper operation.
  4. Check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor for proper operation.

STALLING AFTER WARM-UP

  1. Check fuel system for proper operation.
  2. Check Idle Air Control (IAC) valve for proper operation.
  3. Check EGR system for proper operation.

LACK OF POWER

  1. Check fuel supply system for proper operation.
  2. Check Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor for proper operation.
  3. Check Throttle Position (TP) sensor for proper operation
  4. Check fuel injectors for proper operation.
  5. Check air intake system for proper operation.
  6. Check catalytic converter for proper operation.
  7. Check Variable Valve Timing (VTEC) control solenoid valve (if equipped) for proper operation.
  8. Check oil pressure switch for proper operation.

Intermittent Simulation

To reproduce conditions creating an intermittent problem, use the following methods

  1. Lightly vibrate component.
  2. Heat component.
  3. Wiggle or bend wiring harness.
  4. Spray component with water mist.
  5. Remove/apply vacuum source.

Monitor circuit/component voltage or resistance while simulating intermittent problem. If engine is running, monitor for self-diagnostic codes. Use test results to identify a defective component or circuit.
