TRANSMISSION APPLICATION
- Remove battery and battery carrier. Disconnect wiring harness retaining clip from battery tray. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect shift control cable. Disconnect speedometer cable. Unplug transaxle electrical connectors, and separate harness from retaining clips. On CD4E transaxle, remove ignition coil and cruise control servo, and secure out of the way.
- On all models, remove Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor/switch harness brackets from transaxle. Disconnect ground cables from transaxle. Unplug MLP sensor/switch connector. On CD4E transaxle, remove MLP sensor. On all models, install Engine Support Fixture (014-00750). Disconnect kickdown cable at throttle cam. Disconnect transaxle cooler lines at transaxle. Plug all openings. Remove upper transaxle mount.
- Remove upper transaxle housing bolts. Disconnect oxygen sensor. Disconnect transaxle vent hose. Unplug speed sensor harness connector at sensor. Raise vehicle on hoist, and remove wheels. Using a hammer and flat punch, raise the staked area on axle retaining nut. CAUTION: DO NOT damage threads on outer CV joint.
- Remove nuts attaching axles to steering knuckles. Disconnect lower ball joints from steering knuckles. Disconnect axle shaft mid-bearing from back of engine (if equipped). Disconnect axles from steering knuckles. Remove starter. Remove lower splash shields and torque converter inspection plate. Mark torque converter-to-flexplate position for installation reference.
- Remove torque converter-to-flexplate nuts. Disconnect lower crossmember from vehicle chassis. Using bar inserted between axle shaft and transaxle case, pry axle shafts from transaxle. Install 2 Transaxle Plugs (T88C-7025-AH) into differential side gears.
- Place drain pan under transaxle. Remove pan and differential drain plug. Reinstall oil pan and plug. Support transaxle using transaxle jack. Remove transaxle-to-engine lower bolts. Lower transaxle from vehicle.
To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten transaxle-to-engine bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE . Align reference marks on torque converter and flexplate. Use new circlip on axle shaft inboard-stub shaft. Fill transaxle with required amount of fluid. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION article. Adjust throttle valve cable and shift linkage. Check and adjust axle shaft positioning. See information in FWD AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES.
