General Information
The cooling system consists of three separate circuits, the electric motor circuit, the high voltage battery circuit and the cabin heater circuit. Each circuit uses an electric coolant pump to move the coolant through the circuit. Three diverter valves allow for coolant exchange between the circuits and to allow coolant to flow through the radiator. A coolant filter filters out small particles from the coolant.
Principles of Operation
The cooling system consists of 3 circuits, the electric motor circuit, the high voltage battery circuit and the cabin heater circuit. Three electric coolant pumps circulate the coolant. Three diverter valves control the coolant flow between the 3 circuits and the radiator. A high voltage battery coolant heater consisting of 3 glow plug heaters warms the coolant during charging only (if required). The chiller cools the high voltage battery coolant when necessary. The PCM controls the coolant pumps, the diverter valves, the coolant heater and the chiller.
The degas bottle holds surplus coolant and removes air from the cooling system, reducing hot spots. It also allows for coolant expansion and system pressurization, replenishes coolant to the cooling system and serves as the location for service fill. There are 2 degas lines connected to the degas bottle, 1 from the radiator and 1 from the electric motor/high voltage batteries.
The cooling fan draws air through the radiator to help cool the system coolant as it passes through the radiator.
