- Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
- Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage. - A1 CHECK THE BRAKE PEDAL POSITION (BPP) SWITCH Depress the brake pedal. Did the stop lamps illuminate with the brake pedal depressed? Yes : GO to A2. No : REFER to «EXTERIOR LIGHTING»(ref-232250) .
- A2 CHECK FUSE F4 (10A) Key in OFF position. Check fuse: F4 (10A). Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to A4 . No : GO to A3.
- A3 CHECK CIRCUIT 1715 (RD) FOR SHORT TO GROUND Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250. Disconnect: Fuse F4 (10A). Measure the resistance between output side of fuse F4 (10A) and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes : GO to A6 . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A4 CHECK CIRCUIT 1715 (RD) FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Ignition Switch C250. Disconnect: Fuse F4 (10A). Measure the resistance between output side of fuse F4 (10A) and ignition switch C250-4. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to A5. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A5 CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-4 and C250-5, component side with the ignition key in and with the ignition key out. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms with the ignition key in and greater than 10,000 ohms with the ignition key out? Yes : GO to A7 . No : INSTALL a new ignition switch. REFER to «STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES»(ref-232258) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A6 CHECK CIRCUIT 158 (BK/PK) FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) C2280E. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-5 and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-232247) . TEST the system for normal operation. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A7 CHECK CIRCUIT 158 (BK/PK) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Smart Junction Box (SJB) C2280E. Measure the resistance between ignition switch C250-5 and SJB C2280E-29. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to A8. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A8 CHECK CIRCUIT 605 (RD) FOR SHORT TO GROUND Disconnect: Floor Shifter C2096. Disconnect: SJB C2280A. Measure the resistance between SJB C2280A-9 and ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms? Yes : GO to A9. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A9 CHECK CIRCUIT 605 (RD) FOR AN OPEN Disconnect: Floor Shifter C2096. Disconnect: SJB C2280A. Measure the resistance between SJB C2280A-9 and floor shifter C2096-3. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to A10. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- A10 CHECK SMART JUNCTION BOX (SJB) Connect: Ignition Switch C250. Connect: SJB C2280E. Connect: SJB C2280A. Key in ON position. Apply the brake. Measure the voltage between floor shifter C2096-3 and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes : GO to A11. No : INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to «MULTIFUNCTION ELECTRONIC MODULES»(ref-232247) . TEST the system for normal operation.
- A11 CHECK CIRCUIT 57 (BK) FOR AN OPEN Measure the resistance between floor shifter C2096-1 and ground. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : INSTALL a new brake shift interlock module. REFER to «SELECTOR LEVER CABLE»(ref-232269-S00505383452006051600000) . No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
PINPOINT TEST B: THE SHIFT CONTROL IS OUT OF CORRECT GEAR RELATIONSHIP
- B1 CHECK THE SHIFT CONTROL LINKAGE Key in ON position. Depress the brake pedal. Gain access to the shift control linkage. Actuate the selector lever in all gearshift positions. Observe all linkages during operation. Is the linkage damaged? Yes : INSTALL new shift control linkage. TEST the system for normal operation. No : GO to B2.
- B2 CHECK THE SELECTOR LEVER CABLE Check the selector lever cable and bracket installation. Is the selector lever cable installed correctly and adjusted? Yes : VERIFY that the transmission range (TR) sensor is correctly adjusted. REFER to «AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE-TRANSMISSION - CD4E»(ref-232215) A. TEST the system for normal operation. No : ADJUST or INSTALL a new selector lever cable as necessary.

- C1 CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR VOLTAGE Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Brake Shift Interlock Module. Key in ON position. Measure the voltage between brake shift interlock module pin 4, harness side and ground. Is the voltage greater than 10 volts? Yes : GO to C2. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C2 CHECK THE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SWITCH While cycling the transmission control switch, measure the resistance between brake shift interlock module pin 4 and pin 1, component side. Does the resistance change from greater than 10,000 ohms to less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to C3. No : INSTALL a new brake shift interlock module. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C3 CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN Key in OFF position. Disconnect: Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Measure the resistance between brake shift interlock module pin 1 and the PCM connector pin C29. Is the resistance less than 5 ohms? Yes : GO to C4. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C4 CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND Measure the resistance between PCM connector pin C29 and chassis ground. Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms. Yes : GO to C5. No : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
- C5 CHECK THE CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE Measure the voltage between PCM connector pin C29 and chassis ground. Is voltage present? Yes : REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation. No : Refer to «INTRODUCTION - GASOLINE»(ref-229953) article for Escape (gasoline) and Mariner or «INTRODUCTION- HYBRID ESCAPE»(ref-235202) article for Escape (Hybrid).

- Place the floor shift selector lever in the (D) position.
- Loosen the bolt for the Z-bracket and rotate the Z-bracket counterclockwise to allow access to the shift cable bracket.
- Loosen the gearshift cable adjuster to adjust the cable by turning it 1/4-turn counterclockwise.
- Place the transmission manual control lever in the DRIVE position.
- Tighten the cable adjustment ring by turning it clockwise 1/4 turn.
- Rotate the Z-bracket clockwise over the shift cable end fitting. Tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).

- With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to «JACKING AND LIFTING»(ref-232183) .
- Place the floor shift selector level in the (D) position.
- Gently pry up to remove the upper shift lever trim ring.
- Remove the top finish panel.
- Remove the shift cable from the gearshift assembly. Disconnect the shift cable end from the gearshift lever. Remove the shift cable from the bracket.
- Remove the 2 nuts for the shift cable. To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
- Loosen the bolt for the Z-bracket and rotate the Z-bracket counterclockwise to allow access to the shift cable bracket. To install, tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).
- Disconnect the shift cable end from the manual lever.
- Remove the shift cable from the shift cable bracket.
- To install, reverse the removal procedure.

- To install the upper shift lever trim ring, orient the thick tab on the driver side front of the shifter and press into place.

- Disconnect the battery. For additional information, refer to «BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES»(ref-232248) .
- Place the floor shift selector lever in the (D) position.
- Gently pry up to remove the upper shift lever trim ring.
- Remove the top finish panel.
- Remove the shift cable from the gearshift assembly. Disconnect the shift cable end from the gearshift lever. Remove the shift cable from the bracket.
- Remove the shifter. Disconnect the electrical connector. Remove the 4 bolts and remove the shifter.

- Install the shifter assembly. Install the shifter and the 4 bolts. Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft). Connect the electrical connector.
- Install the shift cable to the gearshift assembly. Connect the shift cable end to the gearshift lever. Install the shift cable to the bracket.
- Install the top finish panel.
- Install the upper shift lever trim ring. To install the upper shift lever trim ring, orient the thick tab on the driver side front of the shifter and press into place.
