Engine Removal - 6-cyl Ford Cab & Chassis Ranger

BRONCO & PICKUP MODELS

  1. Disconnect battery cables. Drain cooling system and crankcase. Mark hood hinge position and remove hood. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove A/C compressor and condenser, if equipped. Disconnect heater hoses from engine.
  2. Disconnect flexible fuel line at fuel pump. Remove radiator. Remove cooling fan, viscous drive, belt and water pump pulley. Disconnect accelerator cable at carburetor and remove retracting spring. If equipped, disconnect power brake vacuum hose from engine.
  3. On models with automatic transmission, disconnect kickdown rod at bellcrank assembly. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Disconnect body ground strap and battery ground cable from engine. Disconnect engine wiring harness from coil and all sending units. Disconnect all EEC-IV sensors, if equipped.
  4. Remove alternator mounting bolts and position alternator aside with wires attached. If equipped, remove power steering pump from mounting brackets and position aside with lines attached.
  5. If equipped with air compressor, bleed air system and disconnect 2 pressure lines from compressor. Raise vehicle. Remove starter and automatic transmission fluid filler tube bracket (if equipped). Remove engine rear plate upper right bolt.
  6. On vehicles with manual transmission, remove all bellhousing lower retaining bolts. Disconnect clutch retracting spring. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove converter housing access cover and flex plate-to-converter nuts. Secure converter assembly in housing.
  7. Remove automatic transmission cooler lines from clip at engine. Remove converter housing-to-engine lower retaining bolts. On all vehicles, remove insulator-to-intermediate support bracket nut from each front engine support. Lower vehicle and support transmission with floor jack.
  8. Remove remaining bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Attach lifting device to engine. Raise engine slightly and carefully pull from transmission. Remove engine from vehicle.

VAN MODELS

  1. Remove engine cover. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner assembly. Disconnect battery. Remove front bumper. Remove grille and lower gravel deflector as assembly. Disconnect radiator hoses. Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines at radiator.
  2. Remove radiator and shroud. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Disconnect alternator and position aside. Remove power steering pump drive belt. Remove power steering pump and bracket from engine. Disconnect and plug fuel line at fuel pump.
  3. Disconnect distributor, EEC-IV sensors and sending unit wires from engine. Disconnect brake booster hose from engine. Disconnect accelerator cable and remove bracket from engine. Disconnect automatic transmission kickdown at bellcrank. Remove exhaust manifold heat deflector and exhaust pipe-to-manifold nuts.
  4. Disconnect both ends of transmission vacuum line at intake manifold and junction. Remove upper transmission-to-engine bolts. Remove automatic transmission dipstick tube support at intake manifold. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter.
  5. Disconnect starter wiring and remove starter. Remove flywheel inspection cover. Remove flex plate-to-flywheel nuts. Remove front engine mount nuts. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine bolts. Lower vehicle from hoist. Attach lifting device to engine. Remove engine from vehicle.
