Engine Oil Pan Removal - v8 Ford Cab & Chassis Ranger

Mechanical ~827 words

5.0L/5.8L - BRONCO & "F" PICKUP

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine oil dipstick (only on pan entry models). Remove fan shroud and position over fan. Disconnect engine mounts at chassis brackets.
  2. On automatic transmission models, disconnect oil cooler line at left side of radiator. Raise engine and place wood blocks under engine supports.
  3. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds. Drain engine oil. Remove oil pan bolts. Lower oil pan onto crossmember. Remove 2 bolts holding oil pump pick-up to oil pump.
  4. Remove nut attaching oil pick-up to No. 3 main bearing cap stud. Lower pick-up and screen assembly into oil pan. Remove oil pan.

5.0L/5.8L - VAN MODELS

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Remove air cleaner and drain cooling system.
  2. If equipped with A/C and/or power steering, remove compressor and/or power steering pump with hoses attached and position out of way. Disconnect upper radiator hose. Remove fan shroud bolts.
  3. Remove oil filler tube. Remove dipstick-to-exhaust manifold bolt. Raise vehicle. Remove splash shield under alternator. Disconnect lower radiator hose.
  4. If equipped, disconnect automatic transmission cooler lines at radiator. Remove engine mount nuts. Disconnect fuel line at fuel pump. Drain crankcase and remove dipstick tube from oil pan. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds.
  5. If equipped, remove automatic transmission dipstick and tube. Disconnect shift linkage rods from transmission. Remove center drive shaft support.
  6. Remove drive shaft from transmission. Place transmission jack with wood block under oil pan and raise engine. Insert wood blocks between engine and mounts to support engine. NOTE: Engine and transmission assembly will pivot around rear engine mount. Engine must remain centered in engine compartment to obtain required lift of 4", which is measured from front mounts.
  7. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and lower oil pan. Remove oil pump and pick-up tube bolts (except 5.8L engine in E150/350 models). Remove nut attaching pick-up tube to No. 3 bearing cap stud and lay tube in oil pan. Remove oil pan.

Note. 7.5L oil pan removal information not available for "F" Pickup models.

7.5L - VAN MODELS

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine cover. Disconnect air intake tube and remove air cleaner assembly. Drain cooling system. Disconnect throttle and transmission linkage from carburetor. Disconnect power brake vacuum line from engine.
  2. Disconnect fuel line, choke lines, and air cleaner adapter from carburetor. Disconnect radiator hoses. Disconnect automatic transmission and engine oil cooler lines from radiator. Remove fan, fan shroud and radiator.
  3. Remove power steering pump and position aside with hoses connected. Remove engine oil dipstick tube and front engine mount attaching bolts. Remove oil filler tube and bracket. If equipped, remove A/C hoses or rotate them downward at rear of compressor to clear dashboard.
  4. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase and remove oil filter. Remove exhaust pipes at manifolds. Disconnect manual and kickdown linkages from transmission. Remove drive shaft and coupling shaft assembly.
  5. Remove transmission dipstick tube assembly. Remove engine oil dipstick and tube from oil pan. Position jack with wood block under oil pan and raise engine until transmission touches floor board. NOTE: Engine and transmission will pivot around rear engine mount. Engine must remain centered in engine compartment to achieve required lift of 4" at front mounts.
  6. Insert wood blocks between engine and mounts to support engine. Remove oil pan bolts and lower oil pan onto crossmember. Remove oil pump and pick-up assembly and place in oil pan. Remove oil pan to rear.

6.9L DIESEL - ALL MODELS

  1. Disconnect ground cables from both batteries. Remove engine oil dipstick. Remove transmission oil dipstick. Remove air cleaner and cover intake opening. NOTE: Fan and clutch assembly are held on with left-hand threaded nut.
  2. Remove fan and fan clutch assembly with Removers (T83T-6312-A and B). Drain cooling system. Remove lower radiator hose. Disconnect and plug power steering return hose at pump. Disconnect all wiring from alternator. Raise vehicle.
  3. Disconnect and plug automatic transmission cooler lines at radiator. Disconnect and plug fuel pump inlet line. Drain engine oil and remove oil filter. Remove transmission dipstick tube. Disconnect exhaust pipes at both manifolds and at muffler flange. Remove pipes.
  4. Remove upper exhaust pipe stud from right exhaust manifold. Remove engine mount nuts. Lower vehicle. Attach lifting brackets to front of engine on E250/350 models. Attach lifting sling to eyes on intake manifold on F250/350.
  5. On all models, raise engine until transmission housing contacts body. Place wood blocks between engine mounts and frame. Use 2 3/4" block on left side and 2" block on right side.
  6. Lower engine onto blocks. Raise vehicle. Remove flywheel inspection plate. Position fuel pump inlet line at back of crossmember No. 1. Ensure automatic transmission cooler lines are out of way.
  7. Remove oil pan attaching bolts and allow oil pan to drop. Remove oil pump and oil pump pick-up from engine and place in oil pan (on F250/350 models). Remove oil pan from vehicle, turning crankshaft to clear counterweights if necessary. On E250/350 models, oil pump can be removed after pan is removed.
