Engine Oil Pan Removal - 4-cyl Ford Cab & Chassis Ranger

2.0L & 2.3L

Note. On vehicles with manual transmissions, oil pan is removed to rear. On models with automatic transmissions, oil pan is removed to front.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove engine oil dipstick and tube. Remove engine mount retaining nuts. If equipped, disconnect oil cooler lines at radiator.
  2. Remove fan shroud. On models with automatic transmission, remove radiator attaching bolts. Raise and support radiator by wiring it to hood.
  3. On all vehicles, raise vehicle on hoist. Drain engine oil. Remove starter. Disconnect tube from exhaust manifold to intake pipe bracket at thermactor check valve.
  4. Remove transmission mount nuts. On vehicles with automatic transmission, remove bellcrank from converter housing. Disconnect oil cooler lines from retainer on engine block. Remove front crossmember.
  5. On vehicles with manual transmissions, disconnect right front lower shock absorber mount. On all vehicles, position jack under engine and raise engine. Place 2 1/2" high block of wood under engine for support. Remove jack.
  6. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, place jack under transmission and raise slightly.
  7. On all vehicles, remove oil pan retaining bolts and lower pan to chassis. Remove oil pump drive and pick-up tube assembly. Remove oil pan from vehicle. Clean oil pan gasket surface. Clean exterior of oil pump and pick-up tube screen.

2.3L TURBO DIESEL

  1. Disconnect negative battery cables. Remove engine oil dipstick. Remove cooling fan and shroud. Drain cooling system and remove radiator. Remove alternator belt. Remove A/C condenser mounting bolts. Support condenser up and out of way.
  2. Raise vehicle. Drain engine oil. Remove front crossmember. Remove stabilizer bar brackets. Lower stabilizer bar. Disconnect power steering hoses at pump. Remove power steering hose hold-down clamp and position hose aside.
  3. Remove motor mount nuts. Raise engine and support with blocks between mounts and crossmember. Remove oil pan bolts and lower pan. Remove 2 bolts and 1 nut holding oil pump pick-up tube. Lower pick-up tube into oil pan.
  4. Rotate crankshaft until main bearing throws are parallel to bottom of engine. This provides clearance to remove oil pan. Remove oil pan through the front by raising it up between engine and radiator support. Then lower it out through bottom.
