Engine Removal - 4-cyl Ford Cab & Chassis Ranger

2.0L & 2.3L

  1. Disconnect and remove battery. Drain cooling system. Remove air cleaner and duct assembly. On 2.3L engines, disconnect air cleaner outlet tube at throttle body, idle speed control hose and heat riser tube.
  2. Mark location of hood hinges and remove hood. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine. Remove radiator shroud attaching screws. Remove upper radiator supports. Remove cooling fan and fan shroud. Remove radiator. Remove oil fill cap. Disconnect primary wire at coil.
  3. Disconnect wires from oil pressure sending unit and water temperature sending unit. Disconnect wires from alternator and starter. Disconnect accelerator cable and kickdown rod from carburetor, if equipped. If equipped, remove A/C compressor from bracket and position aside with hoses attached.
  4. Disconnect power brake vacuum hose. Disconnect chassis fuel line from fuel pump. On 2.3L engines, disconnect 2 push connect fittings at engine fuel rail. Disconnect heater hoses from engine. Remove engine mount nuts.
  5. Raise vehicle. Drain crankcase. Remove starter motor. Disconnect exhaust pipe from manifold. Remove dust cover from transmission. On vehicles with manual transmissions, remove lower bellhousing-to-engine bolts and clutch slave cylinder.
  6. On vehicles with automatic transmissions, remove flex plate-to-converter bolts and bellhousing lower attaching bolts. On all vehicles, lower vehicle. Support transmission with jack. Remove upper bellhousing-to-engine bolts. Attach an engine lifting device to engine. Lift engine out of vehicle.

2.3L TURBO DIESEL

  1. Mark location of hood hinges and remove hood. Disconnect battery ground cables from both batteries and from engine. Remove cables from vehicle. Drain cooling system. Remove crankcase breather hose from valve cover.
  2. Disconnect air intake hose between air cleaner and turbocharger. Cap turbo inlet using Protective Cap Set (T85T-9395-A). Remove A/C compressor and set aside. Disconnect heater hoses. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses from engine.
  3. Remove cooling fan. Remove radiator shroud attaching screws. Remove upper radiator supports. Remove radiator and shroud assembly. Disconnect electrical connector at fuel conditioner. Disconnect and plug fuel lines at fuel conditioner. Disconnect fuel return line at injection pump.
  4. Disconnect vacuum lines at vacuum pump. Remove coolant overflow hose from filler neck. Disconnect accelerator and speed control cable (if equipped) at injection pump. Disconnect engine wiring harness from chassis harness at bottom of injector pump. Disconnect coolant temperature sensor and glow plug buss bar.
  5. Remove starter. Raise vehicle. Remove right side wheel and tire assembly. Remove right side inner fender panel. Disconnect oil pressure switch wire. Disconnect oil cooler lines at oil filter adapter. Loosen engine mount nuts. Disconnect exhaust pipe from turbo outlet pipe.
  6. Disconnect power steering hoses at pump. Disconnect clutch servo hydraulic line at clutch housing and position aside. Remove engine mount bolts. Remove transmission mounting bolts (except top 2). Lower vehicle. Attach lifting device to engine brackets. Remove top 2 transmission mounting bolts. Remove engine from vehicle.
