TCM

The TCM is also referred to as the Secondary On Board Diagnostics Module C (SOBDMC). The TCM is a DC to AC inverter that supplies current to the electric motor and generator/starter and converts AC from the motor and generator/starter to DC to charge the high voltage batteries. For additional information, Refer to INTRODUCTION - HYBRID .

Scheme 37: Sensors and Switches
ItemDescription
1TFT sensor
2TR sensor

The TFT sensor is a thermistor located on the internal transmission harness. It sends a voltage signal to the TCM . The voltage signal varies with TFT . The TFT sensor can not be serviced in vehicle, the transmission must be removed and disassembled.

The TR sensor assembly is an internally mounted sensor that includes the detent bracket. The components of the TR sensor are factory adjusted and installed as a calibrated assembly. The TR sensor contains electronic circuitry that provides the PCM a fixed frequency duty cycle for each of the various positions of the manual lever (PARK, REVERSE, NEUTRAL, DRIVE and LOW). The TR sensor cannot be serviced in vehicle, the transmission must be removed and disassembled. The PCM uses the TR sensor signal for range selection, torque calculation and reverse lamp operation.

Scheme 39

Scheme 39: Power flow

In electric mode, torque flows from the electric motor to the transfer shaft and to the final drive ring gear. When the engine is off, the planetary carrier is held and the planetary ring gear is driven by the transfer shaft. This action causes the sun gear and the generator/starter to rotate. Under certain conditions, the SOBDMC will command the generator/starter to produce electricity for the electric motor and to charge the batteries.

Scheme 40

Scheme 40: Engine Starting Power flow

To start the engine, the final drive works as a holding element to the ring gear in the planetary assembly. The generator/starter turns the sun gear to start the engine.

Scheme 41

Scheme 41: Engine Charging Power flow

To charge the batteries, the final drive works as a holding element to the ring gear in the planetary assembly. The engine turns the carrier. This actions allows the generator/starter to produce current to charge the batteries and power the electric motor.

Regenerative Braking

When additional torque is needed to propel the vehicle, the generator/starter works as a holding element to the planetary sun gear. The flow of torque from the transfer shaft to the planetary ring gear is reversed and torque from the engine combines with the electric motor torque at the transfer shaft.

Scheme 42

Scheme 42: Regenerative Braking

Scheme 43

Scheme 43: Transmission Fluid Pump

The transmission fluid pump is an internal pump bolted to the transmission case. The transmission fluid pump is turned by the input shaft and circulates transmission fluid through the transmission for lubrication and through an oil-to-air cooler mounted in the front of the radiator for transmission cooling. The transmission fluid pump only operates when the engine is running.

27P086Transmission fluid auxiliary pump

The transmission fluid pump is an internal pump bolted to the transmission case. The transmission fluid pump is turned by the input shaft and circulates transmission fluid through the transmission for lubrication and through an oil-to-air cooler mounted in the front of the radiator for transmission cooling. The transmission fluid pump only operates when the engine is running. PHEV also have an electric auxiliary transmission fluid pump to circulate the transmission fluid during extended drive times without engine charging. The auxiliary transmission fluid pump is controlled by the TCM .

Scheme 45: Planetary Assembly
ItemPart NumberDescription
17L437Ring gear
27A398Planetary carrier
37A348Sun gear

This transmission has one simple planetary gear set. The planetary gear set is used to match the vehicle speed to the desired engine speed for maximum efficiency.

The ring gear is connected to the transmission final drive though the middle gear on the transfer shaft. The ring gear rotates when the vehicle is moving.

The planetary carrier is splined to the transmission input shaft and is connected to the engine. The carrier rotates with the engine crankshaft. The planetary carrier is also used to drive the hydraulic fluid pump.

The sun gear is splined to the generator/starter.

ItemPart NumberDescription
17C098Traction motor drive gear assembly
27H471Transfer shaft and gear assembly
37F465Differential carrier and gear assembly
47L437Ring gear assembly

The final drive gear is meshed with the transfer shaft and bolted to the differential case. The ring gear bolts are one time use bolts. Use new bolts when installing the ring gear.

Scheme 47

Scheme 47: Differential

The differential allows the halfshafts and wheels to rotate at different speeds during cornering. The differential assembly consists of the following components

  1. Differential carrier
  2. Two pinion gears
  3. Two side gears

When driving in a straight line, both front wheels rotate at relatively the same speed. This means both side gears are rotating at the same speed as well, while both pinion gears revolve (but do not spin) with the side gears in the differential carrier. During cornering, the wheel on the outside of the turn is forced to rotate faster than the wheel on the inside of the turn. Since the side gears must now rotate at different speeds, the pinion gears rotate on the pinion shaft allowing the drive axles to rotate at different speeds while still transferring output torque.
