Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices.

REFER to: DIAGNOSTIC METHODS .

In most circumstances, the PCM sets a DTC to help guide with diagnostics. Refer to the DTC CHART before using the SYMPTOM CHART . The Condition column lists the vehicle condition. The Possible Sources column lists a detailed vehicle condition. The Action column lists the action to be performed to determine the cause of the condition. Each action lists the components that can cause the condition and the individual components in that system. The components are listed in order of disassembly. Use the list of components and the required action to focus on disassembly inspections for the root cause of the concern.

ConditionPossible SourcesActions
Rattle - occurs at idle or at light acceleration from a stopDamaged roll restrictor or transmission support insulatorsCHECK the transmission insulators for damage. REFER to: ROLL RESTRICTOR RH or REFER to: TRANSMISSION SUPPORT INSULATOR .
Loose fender splash shieldCHECK for loose fasteners. Tighten to specification.
Whine - pitch increases with vehicle speedDamaged or worn planetary or sun gear thrust bearingINSPECT the transmission for wear or damage. DRAIN and FILTER the transmission fluid. INSPECT for metal debris and CHECK fluid condition. If excessive metal debris is present, REFER to: Transmission .
Whine - pitch increases with engine speedIncorrect transmission fluid levelCHECK that the transmission is filled to the correct level. REFER to: TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL CHECK .
Clunk - occurs when shifting from PARK to a DRIVE or REVERSE positionDamaged transmission insulatorsCHECK the transmission insulators for damage. REFER to: ROLL RESTRICTOR RH or REFER to: TRANSMISSION SUPPORT INSULATOR .
Bump - occurs when shifting from PARK to a DRIVE or REVERSE position. Similar to clunk but with no soundInitial gear engagementAcceptable condition.
Vibration - a high frequency (20-80 Hz) that is felt through the seat or selector lever. Changes with engine speedSelector lever cable grounded out or looseCHECK the selector lever cable. REFER to: SELECTOR LEVER CABLE .
