COLUMN SHIFT MODELS
The shift interlock system consists of an electro-magnetic solenoid mounted on upper steering column. Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid is energized by brake switch, completing ground circuit when brake pedal is depressed. With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC positions, the gearshift lever is locked in Park. With ignition switch in OFF positions, the gearshift lever is unlocked and allows gearshift lever to move to any position. This enables vehicle to moved in the event the battery is dead or removed. With ignition switch in ON/RUN position, gearshift lever is released from Park when brake pedal is depressed. The ignition interlock system also prevents the ignition switch from being returned to LOCK or ACC positions unless gearshift lever is returned to Park.
Except Sebring Coupe & Stratus Coupe
Shift interlock system on consists of a shift interlock cable/solenoid assembly connected between ignition switch and floor shifter. Brakelight switch and PCM sense circuits are used to control Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid. With ignition switch in LOCK or ACC position, gearshift lever is locked in Park. With ignition switch in ON/RUN position, gearshift lever is released from Park when brake pedal is depressed. Depressing brake pedal de-energizes BTSI solenoid, releasing cable and allowing gearshift lever to be moved to any position. Gearshift lever can be moved with ignition switch in OFF position. This enables vehicle to moved in the event the battery is dead or removed. Shift interlock system also prevents ignition switch from being rotated to LOCK or ACC position unless gearshift lever is returned to Park.
Sebring Coupe & Stratus Coupe
Shift interlock system consists of a shift interlock cable connected between brake pedal mechanism and floor shifter, and an ignition interlock cable connected between ignition switch and floor shifter. With ignition switch in LOCK position, gearshift lever is locked in Park. With ignition switch in any other position other than LOCK, gearshift lever is released from Park when brake pedal is depressed. Shift interlock system also prevents ignition switch from being rotated to LOCK position unless gearshift lever is returned to "P" position. Key cannot be removed from ignition unless switch is in LOCK position.
