Transaxle/Differential

Note. Transaxle and differential share the same oil sump.

Manufacturer recommends Mopar(R) ATF+4, Type 9602 fluid. Manufacturer does not recommend using additives with transaxle fluid. Use of additives or substitute fluids may induce torque converter clutch shudder.

OIL COOLER FLOW CHECK

  1. With transaxle fluid filled to proper level, disconnect oil cooler return line at transaxle. see scheme 4 Place container under oil cooler return line. CAUTION: Do not obtain more than one quart of fluid, or transaxle may be damaged.
  2. Apply parking brake. Start engine and allow it to idle. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Check fluid flow from oil cooler return line.
  3. If fluid flow is consistent and takes 20 seconds or less to obtain one quart, oil pump volume and oil cooler flow are okay. If fluid flow is intermittent or takes more than 20 seconds to obtain one quart, disconnect oil cooler inlet line. Refill transaxle to proper level and recheck flow.
  4. If fluid flow is intermittent or takes more than 20 seconds to obtain one quart, check line pressure. See PERFORMANCE TESTS in appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS. If fluid flow is consistent and takes 20 seconds or less to obtain one quart, replace oil cooler. Reconnect oil cooler lines. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. ON-VEHICLE REPAIRS

Note. Various components may be serviced without transaxle/transmission removal. For servicing of these components, see appropriate component under ADJUSTMENTS and/or REMOVAL & INSTALLATION . For additional information on testing electrical components, see appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.

GEARSHIFT CABLE

  1. Apply parking brake. Remove screw cover plugs over screws just behind cup holders on center console. Remove screws holding center console to floor bracket.
  2. Open lid on center console, if equipped. If vehicle is equipped with a non-arm rest center console, remove screw cover plugs near rear of center console.
  3. Remove remaining screws and center console. (Scheme 58) Remove gearshift handle. Remove gearshift bezel. (Scheme 59) Place gearshift lever in Park. Loosen shift cable adjustment screw. (Scheme 60)
  4. Ensure gearshift lever and manual control lever on transaxle is in Park. Manual control lever is lever on transaxle on which gearshift cable is installed. Verify transaxle is in Park by attempting to roll vehicle in either direction.
  5. Tighten shift cable adjustment screw to 71 INCH lbs. (8 N.m). Ensure engine starts only with gearshift lever in Park or Neutral. If engine starts with gearshift lever in any other gear range except Park and Neutral, or binding exists, readjust gearshift cable. Reinstall gearshift bezel and center console.
