REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

WARNINGVehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTIONWhen battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.

Removal (Concorde, Intrepid, LHS & 300M)

CAUTIONIgnition interlock system is only adjusted after installing a new cassette. Adjustment can ONLY be performed once. If system operates incorrectly after installation of cassette, install and adjust new interlock cassette.
  1. Ignition interlock cassette slides into housing behind lock cylinder. Cable at rear of cassette attaches to locking arm on shift mechanism. (Scheme 3) Depress tab on top of cassette.
  2. Slide interlock cassette out of housing. Remove cable from locking arm on gearshift lever mechanism.

Installation

Note. Adjustment of interlock cassette is done during installation procedure.

  1. Ensure latch rotates freely on gearshift lever gate. Ensure gearshift lever is in Park. Remove ignition key. Install cable over hook on locking arm. Slide cassette into housing until it is locked in place. Push adjustment tab in until it stops. Adjustment tab will click as it moves into position. Ensure tab is fully depressed.
  2. Operate interlock system to confirm correct operation. See «SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK»(ref-131133-S25855899032001121100000) under TROUBLE SHOOTING. Ensure ignition switch is prevented from being returned to LOCK or ACC positions unless gearshift lever is returned to Park. Key should only be able to be removed from lock cylinder with ignition switch in LOCK position.

  1. Apply parking brake. Place gearshift lever in Neutral. Loosen set screw and remove gearshift lever knob. Remove ashtray located on center console bezel, below radio. Center console bezel fits around gearshift lever and on top of center console.
  2. Remove center console bezel-to-center console screw located just below ashtray area on center console bezel. Disengage clips holding each rear corner of center console bezel on center console. Remove center console bezel.
  3. Remove left end cap (fuse panel cover) from instrument panel. Remove screws behind fuse panel cover attaching lower instrument panel cover to panel mounting bracket. Remove lower instrument panel cover. Remove wire harness connector from trunk release switch in lower instrument panel cover. Remove park brake release cable from brake release handle in lower instrument panel cover. Remove reinforcement panel from instrument panel. Remove diagnostic connector from reinforcement panel.
  4. Remove 2 screws from lower steering column shroud. Unsnap and disconnect upper shroud from lower shroud. Tilt column down. Remove upper shroud. Tilt column up. Remove steering column tilt lever. Remove lower shroud. Locate integral BTSI solenoid on interlock cable. Disconnect solenoid harness connector.
  5. Remove interlock cable from gearshift lever assembly. Slide cable out of groove in interlock lever. see scheme 8 Depress lock tab on interlock cable and pull cable out lock cylinder housing. (Scheme 4) Remove interlock cable from vehicle. Note routing of cable for installation reference. To install cable, reverse removal procedure. Ensure ignition switch is in ON/RUN position when inserting cable into lock cylinder housing. Check cable adjustment after cable installation. See «SHIFT LOCK & IGNITION INTERLOCK CABLES»(ref-131133-S17956099512001121100000) under ADJUSTMENTS.
