REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
Note. If battery is disconnected or voltage supply to TCM is interrupted, TCM must relearn shift characteristics. Perform shift quality quick-learn procedure. See PROGRAMMING in appropriate DIAGNOSIS article in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS.
- Apply parking brake. Remove screw cover plugs over screws just behind cup holders on center console. Remove screws holding center console to floor bracket. Open lid on center console, if equipped. If vehicle is equipped with a non-arm rest center console, remove screw cover plugs near rear of center console.
- Remove remaining screws and center console. see scheme 5 Remove gearshift handle. Remove gearshift bezel. see scheme 6 Disconnect shift cable from shifter assembly. (Scheme 49)
- Disconnect battery cables and remove battery. Remove air cleaner/throttle body assembly. Disconnect proportional purge solenoid and crankcase vent hose from throttle body. Disconnect TP sensor and IAC connectors. Remove mounting bolt and nut. Lift up on air cleaner assembly. Disconnect accelerator and speed control (if equipped) cables. Fully remove air cleaner/throttle body assembly.
- Remove battery tray from bracket. Disconnect shift cable from shift lever and remove from bracket. (Scheme 50) Raise and support vehicle. Remove catalytic converter heat shield. (Scheme 51) Remove intermediate pipe heat shield front bolts. Remove remaining grommet plate screw. (Scheme 52) Remove gearshift cable assembly from vehicle.
- To install gearshift cable, reverse removal procedure. Check cable adjustment. See «GEARSHIFT CABLE»(ref-138070-S07512260752002031900000) under ADJUSTMENTS.

Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect gearshift cable from manual valve lever. Remove manual valve lever. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect shift linkage or cable from shift lever on manual shaft assembly. Remove shift lever from manual shaft assembly.
- Remove bolts, oil pan, oil filter and "O" ring. Remove valve body/transfer plate-to-transaxle case bolts. Note bolt length and location for reassembly reference.
- Move roller on park sprag rod from park sprag guide bracket. (Scheme 53) Lift valve body and manual shaft assembly from transaxle case.
Installation
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Ensure roller on park sprag rod engages with park sprag guide bracket. Install valve body/transfer plate-to-transaxle case bolts in original location. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-138070-S26996836462002031900000) .
- Install NEW oil filter and NEW "O" ring. Apply RTV sealant on oil pan-to-transaxle surface and below head of oil pan bolts before installing. Install and tighten oil pan bolts to specification.
- Install shift lever on manual shaft assembly. Reconnect shift linkage or cable. Fill transaxle with appropriate fluid to proper level. See «LUBRICATION»(ref-138070-S11942729552002031900000) .
