Connecting rod bearing shells
NoteThe operating clearances of the con-rods, of between 0,030 and 0,054 mm, are achieved by the creation of 3 classes of lower bearing shell (big end)
Connecting rod upper bearing halfshell
There is only one class of upper conrod bearing shell, equipped with a lubrication hole
| - | nominal dimension |
|---|---|
| distance "B" | 1,839 ± 0,003 mm |
| colour identification marking at "b" | black |
Lower conrod half-shell
The classes of connecting rod bearing shell are indicated on the connecting rod (lug side) at "f" and on the crankshaft (engine flywheel side) at "e"
The lower conrod half-shell categories are determined by measuring the bearings
"h" bar code: used in production
"g" alphanumeric characters: for "After Sales" use
The first character corresponds to bearing No. 1, the second to bearing No. 2, and so on
NoteThe conrod caps are marked from 1 to 4, conrod cap No. 1 at the flywheel end
Example
- Characters read on the crankshaft: 37BF
- Character read from the conrod No. 1: F
- Character read from the conrod No. 2: C
For bearing No. 1 (3F), the lower half-bearing shell to be fitted is class B
For bearing No. 2 (7C), the lower half-bearing shell to be fitted is class A
NoteProceed in the same way for the 2 other assemblies

NoteIn absence of means of accurate measurement, fit lower bearing shells of class A this should only be done in exceptional cases, as it may cause extra engine noise
Half-shells on crankshaft bearing
The operating tolerance of the crankshaft bearings is obtained by the creation of several categories of half-shells (see table below)
- 3 categories of upper half-shells (cylinder block side)
- 8 categories of lower half-shells (crankshaft bearing cap casing side)

Lower bearing shells (smooth)
The classes of crankshaft bearing shell are indicated on the cylinder block at "j" and on the crankshaft (timing side) at "i"
"l" bar code: used in production
"k" alphanumeric characters: for "After Sales" use
The first character corresponds to bearing No. 1, the second to bearing No. 2, and so on
NoteThe crankshaft bearings are marked from 1 to 5, No. 1 at flywheel end
All engines since the series launch up to the manufacturing serial no. 174878
The crankshaft bearing clearances, of between 0,019 and 0,049 mm, obtained by the creation of 4 classes of smooth lower shell bearings (crankshaft bearing cap casing side)
Example
- Characters read on the crankshaft: A7H6D
- Characters on the cylinder block: EPTG6
For bearing No. 1 (AE), the lower half-bearing shell to be fitted is class F
For bearing No. 2 (7P), the lower half-bearing shell to be fitted is class D
NoteProceed in the same way for the 3 other assemblies

NoteIn absence of means of accurate measurement, fit lower bearing shells of class D this should only be done in exceptional cases, as it may cause extra engine noise
All engines from manufacturing number 174879: the crankshaft bearing clearances, of between 0,019 and 0,049 mm, obtained by the creation of 5 classes of smooth lower shell bearings (crankshaft bearing cap casing side)

Half-thrust washer
The crankshaft lateral clearance is adjusted by means of thrust washers on bearing No. 2
The crankshaft lateral play is between 0,06 and 0,15 mm
Nominal dimension: E = 2,28 mm to 2,33 mm
NoteThe engine sequence between production numbers 0139265 and 0146012 has an assembly of special thrust washers with extra height
