Timing Chain Tensioner Cadillac Eldorado X

Mechanical 1 illustration ~232 words

Note. This procedure applies to all 3 timing chain tensioners.

Removal

Remove front cover. See FRONT COVER . Remove 2 bolts and tensioner.

Installation

  1. Collapse tensioner before installing. Rotate ratchet release lever counterclockwise and hold. (Scheme 2)
  2. Collapse tensioner shoe and hold. Release ratchet lever and slowly release pressure on shoe. As ratchet lever moves to first click, hold tensioner shoe inward and insert a pin through hole in release lever.
  3. Locked ratchet mechanism should hold shoe in collapsed position. Install tensioner and bolts and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-54836-S33559028762001011700000) table. Remove retaining pin allowing tensioner shoe to extend. Install front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-54836-S17136334422001011700000).

  1. Remove engine and mount it on an engine stand. See «ENGINE»(ref-54836-S17394765662001011700000) . Remove serpentine drive belt, idler pulley and belt tensioner. Remove front cover. See «FRONT COVER»(ref-54836-S17136334422001011700000) . Remove oil pump. See «OIL PUMP»(ref-54836-S33128115312001011700000) under ENGINE OILING. Remove camshaft covers. See «CAMSHAFT COVER»(ref-54836-S42278552812001011700000) . Align timing marks.
  2. Remove all 3 timing chain tensioners. Remove camshaft sprocket bolt from all 4 camshafts, and remove sprockets. Remove secondary drive chains from intermediate shaft sprocket.
  3. Remove bolt from intermediate shaft sprocket. Slide gears and primary drive chain off crankshaft and intermediate shaft. Unless wear is evident, it is not necessary to remove intermediate shaft.

Set camshaft timing. See CAMSHAFT . Install front cover. See FRONT COVER . Install camshaft covers. See CAMSHAFT COVER .
