CAUTIONBefore servicing any electrical component, the ignition key must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Removal

  1. Drain the coolant.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the air intake duct.
  4. Disconnect the radiator hose.
  5. Remove the thermostat housing.
  6. Remove the thermostat. Clean all sealing surfaces

Installation

Note. Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the thermostat.
  2. Install the thermostat housing using a new gasket.
  3. Install the thermostat housing bolts. Tighten the thermostat housing bolts to 89 INCH lbs. (10 N.m).
  4. Connect the radiator hose.
  5. Install the air cleaner outlet duct.
  6. Refill the coolant.
  7. Start the engine.
  8. Check for leaks.

Note. Water Pump Remover/Installer (J-38816) is required to turn pump assembly.

Drain cooling system. Move engine torque strut for access. Remove air cleaner. Remove water pump belt cover (4 bolts). Remove water pump drive belt, by-pass hose, lower hose and pump cover. Using Remover/Installer (J-38816), rotate water pump assembly clockwise and remove from vehicle. (Scheme 10)

Clean water pump assembly and pump housing sealing surfaces. Using a NEW "O" ring, install water pump assembly and tighten counterclockwise to 74 ft. lbs. (100 N.m). To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten water pump cover bolts (4) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table.

Note. When removing oil pan as an on-vehicle procedure, it is not necessary to remove the engine assembly. Remove the transaxle.

Remove engine and place on stand, or remove transaxle. See ENGINE . Drain engine oil. Remove pan bolts and pan. Gasket is reusable unless damaged. DO NOT remove gasket from oil pan unless replacement is required.

Install new oil pan gasket, if required, by starting seal into pan groove and working seal into groove in both directions. Once seal is exposed to oil it will expand and no longer stay in groove without wrinkles. If wrinkles exist, replace with NEW seal. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten fasteners to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table. (Scheme 11)
