Engine Controls - 3.6l - Diagnosis Information & Procedures Cadillac CTS I

Diagnostic Starting Point - Engine Controls

Begin the system diagnosis with Diagnostic System Check - Engine Controls . The Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls will provide the following information

  1. The identification of the control modules which command the system
  2. The ability of the control modules to communicate through the serial data circuit
  3. The identification of any stored diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and the codes status

The use of the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls will identify the correct procedure for diagnosing the system and where the procedure is located.

Description

The Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls is an organized approach to identifying a condition that is created by a malfunction in the engine control system. The Diagnostic System Check must be the starting point for any driveability concern. The Diagnostic System Check directs the service technician to the next logical step in order to diagnose the concern. Understanding and correctly using the diagnostic table reduces diagnostic time and prevents the replacement of good parts.

Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. 12: This step is for areas that have inspection and maintenance testing procedures for emissions testing. Use this step if the testing facility found one or more I/M system statuses that did not set.
StepActionYesNo
1Perform the following preliminary inspections: Ensure that the battery is fully charged. Refer to Battery Inspection/Test in Engine Electrical. Ensure that the battery cables are clean and tight. Inspect the easily accessible systems or the visible system components for obvious damage or conditions that could cause the symptom. Refer to Strategy Based Diagnosis in General Information. Ensure that the engine and control module grounds are clean, tight, and in the correct location. Inspect for aftermarket devices that could affect the operation of the system. Refer to Checking Aftermarket Accessories in Wiring Systems. Ensure the resistance between the engine control module (ECM) housing and the battery negative cable is less than 0.5 ohms. Did you find and correct the condition?System OKGo to Step 2
2Install a scan tool using the J-45289 Controller Area Network Diagnostic Interface (CANdi) Module. Turn ON the scan tool. Does the scan tool turn ON?Go to Step 3Go to Scan Tool Does Not Power Up in Data Link Communications
3Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. Attempt to establish communication with the ECM. Does the scan tool communicate with the ECM?Go to Step 4Go to Data Link References in Data Link Communications
4IMPORTANT: The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode. Access the Class 2 Power Mode in the Diagnostic Circuit Check on the scan tool. Rotate the ignition switch through all positions while observing the ignition switch power mode parameter. Refer to the Body Control System Description and Operation in Body Control Systems, for a list of the power mode states that correspond to each ignition switch position. Does the ignition switch parameter reading match the ignition switch position for all switch positions?Go to Step 5Go to Power Mode Mismatch in Body Control System
5Attempt to start the engine. Does the engine crank?Go to Step 6Go to Symptoms - Engine Electrical in Engine Electrical
6Did the engine start and idle?Go to Step 7Go to Engine Cranks but Does Not Run
7IMPORTANT: Do NOT clear the DTCs unless instructed by a diagnostic procedure. Select the DTC display function for the engine control module and record the DTCs. If multiple powertrain DTCs are stored, diagnose the DTCs in the following order: Test for component level DTCs. For example, sensor DTCs, solenoid DTCs, and relay DTCs Begin with the lowest number DTC unless the diagnostic table directs you otherwise. Test for system level DTCs. For example, misfire DTCs, EVAP system DTCs and fuel trim DTCs. If there are any powertrain DTCs, Select Capture Info in order to store the Powertrain DTC information with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display any DTCs?Go to Step 8Go to Step 11

IMPORTANT
The engine may start during the following step. Turn OFF the engine as soon as you have observed the Crank power mode.
IMPORTANT
Do NOT clear the DTCs unless instructed by a diagnostic procedure.

A Diagnostic System Check for Engine Controls

Scan Tool Data List

The Engine Scan Tool Data List contains all engine related parameters that are available on the scan tool. The list is arranged in alphabetical order. A parameter may appear in any one of the data lists, and in some cases may appear more than once, or in more than one data list in order to group certain related parameters together.

Use the Engine Scan Tool Data List only after the following conditions are determined

  1. The Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls is completed.
  2. There are no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  3. The on-board diagnostics are functioning correctly.

Scan tool values from an engine that is operating correctly may be used for comparison with the engine you are diagnosing. The Engine Scan Tool Data List represents the values that would be seen on a normal operating engine.

IMPORTANTDo not use a scan tool that displays faulty data. The scan tool concern should be reported to the manufacturer. Use of a faulty scan tool may result in misdiagnosis and unnecessary parts replacement.

Only the parameters listed below are referenced in this service information for use in diagnosis. If all values are within the typical range described below, refer to Symptoms - Engine Controls for diagnosis.

The column labeled Data List indicates where a parameter is located on the scan tool. Review the scan tool operating manual for the exact locations of the data lists. The following is a description of each term listed
