Note. All Controller Area Network (CAN) signals are carried by 2 wires between PCM and Transmission Control Module (TCM).
- VAG 1551 is necessary to diagnose this code. Using VAG 1551, check TCM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If a TCM DTC is also stored for CAN, go to next step. If a TCM DTC for CAN is not stored, erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connectors. Connect VAG 1598/22 test box to PCM wiring harness. Using a DVOM, check for a short or open circuit between test box sockets 29 and 41 to TCM. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair as necessary. If wiring is okay, go to next step. If wiring is not okay, repair wiring harness as necessary. Erase DTC memory. See CLEARING CODES in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
- Replace TCM. If DTC occurs again after replacing TCM, replace PCM. See PCM REPLACEMENT in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS - INTRODUCTION article.
