Destruction of non-triggered SRS components

A tool kit with mounting devices, discharge box and adapter cables has been developed for the destruction of electrically activated pyrotechnic SRS components that have been disconnected and removed from the vehicle.

Activation of the SRS component destroys its pyrotechnic component. This is to be done with the component secured in the fixture included in the kit.

For components with different versions for different models, only an example of securing and connection is shown.

Destruction is carried out by connecting an adapter cable to the component and then connecting the cable to a 12 V battery via a discharge box, whereby the component can be activated.

Information for avoiding injury and handling destroyed material

The work may only be performed by knowledgeable personnel and at an approved location for this type of work.

Knowledgeable personnel refers to those with sufficient knowledge in the handling of pyrotechnic equipment.

Approved location refers to a place suitable for the equipment and its function that is deemed acceptable by the appropriate authorities.

WARNINGThe equipment must not be used unless the aforementioned requirements are fulfilled.

This method has been reviewed by the Swedish Rescue Services Agency's department for flammable and explosive goods (BEX) and has been deemed satisfactory. SRS component destruction requires a permit from the Swedish Rescue Services Agency, whereby the workshop should refer to this method in its application. Before this equipment is put to use in other countries, the sales company must be contacted to ensure that it complies with national legislation.

Check thoroughly that no material or other objects can be spread during the destruction and that no one is within 9 m of the destruction site. The user should preferably be separated from the destruction site by a wall or the like.

To protect from injury, fully covering clothing (long pants and long-sleeved shirts), protective gloves, hearing protection, protective eyewear and, when handling destroyed components, a fresh air mask are to be worn.

Heat develops during destruction and spreads throughout the component. To enable reuse of adapter cables several times (if possible), the cable is to be detached with a pliers as soon as possible after destruction. This does not apply for dual stage airbags as the wait time between stage 1 and stage 2 destruction is 30 minutes.

Avoid skin contact with the component or cable after destruction due to the risk of burns or corrosive injuries caused by gunpowder residue. In the event of skin contact, wash the area thoroughly.

A fresh air mask is to be worn when detaching cables and handling destroyed components to prevent inhalation of the gases formed upon destruction.

After cooling, destroyed components are to be put in a plastic bag and handled as scrap.

Measures upon failed destruction

Repeat activation for destruction and check the lamp on the box.

If the lamp lights during activation, the connection has been properly made and the fuse in intact.

Remove the key from the discharge box and wait 20 minutes.

During that time, observe the SRS component so that no one comes within the destruction site.

After 20 minutes, check the connections of the SRS component.

Adjust the connections as necessary.

Repeat the destruction following the standard method.

If there is still no function, remove the key and disconnect the battery.

Wait another 20 minutes.

During that time, observe the SRS component so that no one comes within the destruction site.

Then detach the connection to the SRS component.

Remove the SRS component from the fixture.

Send the non-disarmed SRS component so it can be rendered harmless.

Ensure that local and national requirements are met.

If the lamp does not light , check

  1. that the battery is fully charged
  2. that all cables are properly connected
  3. that the fuse is intact.

Adjust the equipment as necessary.

Repeat the destruction following the standard method.

Upon continued failed destruction and indication of the indicator lamp, wait 20 minutes with continued attention paid to the that SRS component so that no one comes within 9 m of the SRS component.

Then detach the connection to the SRS component.

Check the equipment.

Handling deployed SRS systems after a collision

Note. First read the instructions for reusing the safety products. See Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS), reuse .

This method is divided into 3 sections

Steering column Remove any broken glass from the windshield from the ventilation ducts.Important: When one or more airbags has deployed, the seat belt tensioners in the rear seat (and in the third row rear seat) are automatically activated. For this reason, these seat belt tensioners, the seat belt buckles and the end mountings must be replaced. When one or more airbags have deployed, check the seat belt tensioners in the front seats. See Seat belt tensioner, checking . The activation of the tensioner function depends on whether the seat belt was in use or not when the airbag deployed. Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS) must always be replaced: -- diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) cannot be erased -- the control module has suffered mechanical damage -- there is damage to the car floor in the area around the control module. The damage can weaken the mechanical mountings for the control module. If the vehicle is equipped with Volvo On Call, both the collision cable and the auxiliary battery must be checked. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) SRS-112 must not be erased during the warranty period. The sensor module should be returned to Volvo in accordance with current procedures. It should also be possible to drive the car so that the function of the steering is guaranteed.
After a seat airbag (SIPS) has deployed: Replace all deployed airbags. Replace the upholstery, foam and impact protection on the seats.After a seat airbag (SIPS) has deployed: Check that the seat and the backrest frame on the seat are straight. This may be deformed after deployment of the airbag. Replace all damaged cable harnesses.
After activation of the inflatable curtain (IC): Replace all deployed inflatable curtains. Replace all damaged components by the inflatable curtain, e.g.: - the A panels - the B panels - the C panels - the D panels - the headlining.After activation of the inflatable curtain (IC): Replace the collision sensors on the B and C-posts. Replace all damaged mounting elements for the inflatable curtain and the panels. Replace all damaged cable harnesses.After activation of the inflatable curtain (IC): Following a heavy frontal collision, it is possible that the front part of the A-post for the inflatable curtain may be damaged. Check this.
After whiplash system (WHIPS) deployment: Replace the WHIPS mechanism.After whiplash system (WHIPS) deployment: Check that the seat has no other visible damage.After whiplash system (WHIPS) deployment: Note that the WHIPS system is available in two variants.

Supplemental Restraint System Module (SRS), reuse

When repairing a crashed vehicle, the Volvo policy is to replace those systems that may have been damaged where full function cannot be guaranteed.

What is replaced and when?

Driver/passenger airbag modules and seat belt tensioners indicate clearly when they have deployed and must be replaced.

When a driver and/or passenger airbag module has deployed

  1. all seat belt tensioners, seat belt buckles and end mountings in the rear seat (and in the third row rear seat where applicable) have been activated and should therefore be replaced
  2. the seat belt tensioners in the front seats are checked according to «Seat belt tensioner, checking»(ref-441129-S22241488912011121500000) , as activation of the tensioner function depends on whether seat belt was in use or not.

When the vehicle is subjected to collision forces without the driver and/or passenger airbag module deploying

  1. all the seat belt tensioners in the car must be checked. See «Seat belt tensioner, checking»(ref-441129-S22241488912011121500000) .

Procedures

When replacing seat belts that were in use in a collision, cut the seat belt to prevent reuse.

Checking the seat belt tensioner

CAUTIONWhen replacing deployed seat belt tensioners, seat belt buckles and end mountings must always be replaced.

Seat belt tensioners can be checked in two different ways

  1. Check for any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) using VIDA
  2. Physical check as follows.

Note. Third row seat belt tensioners cannot be checked physically, only via VIDA.

Insert a wire in the pipe on the seat belt tensioner as illustrated.

Check the piston position in the seat belt tensioner.

Piston position A

The seat belt tensioner has deployed. Replace both the seat belt (inertia) reels and the seat belt tensioners. See Seat belt front, replacing .

Piston position B

The seat belt tensioner has not deployed. No corrective action is required.

Note. If any airbag has deployed, all seat belts and tensioners must be replaced.

WARNINGNon-deployed pyrotechnical SRS components must not be deployed or ignited inside the vehicle.

WARNINGPyrotechnical SRS components must never be taken apart, repaired or transferred to another vehicle.
WARNINGUnder no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected, non-deployed SRS component. This could deploy the SRS component.

Scheme 117: Storage and transport
WARNINGWhen temporarily storing the driver's airbag (SRS) it must be positioned with the metal side (reverse side) down in a well protected site.

Note. For longer storage periods (unattended storage) the airbags, inflatable curtains and other pyrotechnical SRS components must be stored in the original packaging (wire wool packaging) at a dedicated site

WARNINGIn the event of a fire at the storage site, the fire authorities must be informed of the presence of pyrotechnical SRS components according to the relevant national statutory requirements.

Note. Loose inflatable curtains (IC) must always be stored in inflatable curtain (IC) racks, or in other approved packaging.

WARNINGInflatable curtains must not be exposed to temperatures above 110 °C.

Airbags and pyrotechnical SRS components must be transported according to the relevant national statutory requirements.

Install

  2. screw 1 (screw in until the thread engages only).

Remove the packaging by pulling it straight downwards.

Note. Ensure that no bits of paper remain.

Install

  1. screws 2 and 8.

Hook on the IC (inflatable curtain). Install screw 3.

Note. It is very important that the hook is correctly installed.

Install

  1. clip G.

Tighten screws 1-7. Tighten to 10 Nm .

Fill the plastic container in the fixture completely with water to maximize stability.

Position the fixture with the mounting grooves up.

Install suitable mounting brackets in suitable grooves on the fixture without tightening.

Select a groove in the fixture so that upon installation the airbag is centered as much as possible in the fixture. This is to avoid the risk of overturning.

Position the airbag so that it is filled upward when discharged.

Screw the airbag into its normal screw mounting on the mounting brackets. Tighten the screws.

For airbags installed with snap catches, the studs that snap the airbag in place must be removed.

The airbag can then be screwed into the mounting brackets in the screw mountings of the studs. Tighten the screws.

Screw the mounting brackets into the fixture. Tighten the screws.

On airbags installed in S80 model year 1999, there are connections for stage 2. Stage 2 is only primed when the ignition is on. Thus, there will not be powerful activation when stage 2 is triggered.

Insert the key and turn it to position 1.

Destroy the airbag by connecting the rocker switch and pushbutton.

Turn the key to position 0.

Remove the key from the discharge box and store so that it is inaccessible for unauthorized use.

SRS wiring is orange. When working on SRS wiring, extra care must be taken to avoid damage to the following areas

  1. soundproofing panels
  2. the glove compartment
  3. the dashboard
  4. steering shaft covers
  5. the ignition switch
  6. sill trim panels
  7. A, B and C-posts
  8. the roof
  9. the parcel shelf.

Sensors

The collision sensors for the SRS system (4+1) are located in the B-posts, C-posts and in the SRS control module.

The collision sensors control the SRS system.

Note. Never install car accessories on or beside the sensors.
