INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT

  1. If DTC P0010 is output, check the VVT system (for intake camshaft of bank 1) circuit.
  2. If DTC P0020 is output, check the VVT system (for intake camshaft of bank 2) circuit.
  3. Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*. *: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transaxle.
  4. Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  5. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

  4. Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  5. DTC P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022 may be stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. The DTC will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. Those foreign objects may then be captured by the oil filter.

Scheme 473

Scheme 473: DESCRIPTION
  1. The intake air temperature sensor, mounted on the mass air flow meter sub-assembly, monitors the intake air temperature. The intake air temperature sensor has a built-in thermistor with a resistance that varies according to the temperature of the intake air. When the intake air temperature is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes (Scheme 473)
  2. The intake air temperature sensor is powered by a 5 V supply from the THA terminal of the ECM, via resistor R.
  3. Resistor R and the intake air temperature sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the intake air temperature sensor changes, according to changes in the intake air temperature, the voltage at terminal THA also varies. Based on this signal, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume when the engine is cold to improve driveability.

HINT

  1. A low air fuel ratio sensor voltage could be caused by a rich air fuel mixture. Check for conditions that would cause the engine to run rich.
  2. A high air fuel ratio sensor voltage could be caused by a lean air fuel mixture. Check for conditions that would cause the engine to run lean.
  3. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. The ECM records vehicle and driving condition information as freeze frame data the moment a DTC is stored. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can be helpful in determining whether the vehicle was moving or stationary, whether the engine was warmed up or not, whether the air fuel ratio was lean or rich, as well as other data recorded at the time of a malfunction.
  4. Bank 1 refers to the bank that includes the No. 1 cylinder*. *: The No. 1 cylinder is the cylinder which is farthest from the transaxle.
  5. Bank 2 refers to the bank that does not include the No. 1 cylinder.
  6. Sensor 1 refers to the sensor closest to the engine assembly.
  7. Sensor 2 refers to the sensor farthest away from the engine assembly.

HINT

  1. If any DTCs other than misfire DTCs are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first.
  3. If the misfire does not recur when the vehicle is brought to the workshop, reproduce the conditions stored in the ECM as freeze frame data.
  4. If the misfire still cannot be reproduced even though the conditions stored in the ECM as freeze frame data have been reproduced, one of the following factors is considered to be a possible cause of the problem: There was insufficient fuel in the tank. Improper fuel was used. The spark plugs have been contaminated. The problem requires further diagnosis.
  5. After finishing repairs, check the misfire counts of the cylinders (Cylinder #1 Misfire Count to Cylinder #6 Misfire Count).
  6. Be sure to confirm that no misfiring cylinder DTCs are stored again by conducting the confirmation driving pattern after finishing repairs.
  7. For 6 cylinder engine, the ECM intentionally does not set the specific misfiring cylinder DTCs at high engine speed. If misfires occur only in high engine speed areas, only DTC P0300 is set. In the event of DTC P0300 being present, perform the following operations: Clear the DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-507773-S23500289082012100900000) . Start the engine and conduct the confirmation driving pattern. Read the misfiring rates of each cylinder or DTC(s) using the Techstream. Repair the cylinder(s) that has a high misfiring rate or is indicated by the DTC. After finishing repairs, conduct the confirmation driving pattern again, in order to verify that DTC P0300 is not set.
  8. When one of Short FT #1, Long FT #1, Short FT #2 or Long FT #2 in the freeze frame data is outside the range of +/-15%, the air fuel ratio may be rich (-15% or less) or lean (+15% or higher).
  9. When Coolant Temp in the freeze frame data is less than 75°C (167°F), the misfires have occurred only while warming up the engine.
  10. An extremely imbalanced drive wheel which causes body vibration may cause misfire DTCs to be stored.

HINT

  1. After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 is output again, check the following items related to the VVT sensor. Installation condition of the VVT sensor Installation condition of the camshaft Connection of the VVT sensor connector
  2. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical system.
  3. The engine speed can be checked by using the Techstream. To perform the check, follow the procedures below: Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / Primary / Engine Speed. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the engine running normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
