INSPECTION PROCEDURE

HINT

  1. After performing the inspection procedure for the crankshaft position sensor, if DTC P0335 is output again, check the following items related to the camshaft position sensor. Installation condition of the camshaft position sensor. Installation condition of the camshaft. Connection of the camshaft position sensor connector.
  2. If no problem is found through this diagnostic troubleshooting procedure, troubleshoot the engine mechanical system.
  3. Check the engine speed. The engine speed can be checked by using the Techstream. To check the engine speed, follow the procedure below: Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / Engine Speed. The engine speed may be indicated as zero despite the crankshaft revolving normally. This is caused by a lack of NE signals from the crankshaft position sensor. Alternatively, the engine speed may be indicated as lower than the actual engine speed if the crankshaft position sensor output voltage is insufficient.
  4. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING

HINT

Perform the operation with the engine speeds and time durations described below prior to checking the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors. This is in order to activate the sensors sufficiently to obtain the appropriate inspection results.

Scheme 306

Scheme 306: CONDITIONING FOR SENSOR TESTING
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 (a).
  2. Start the engine and warm it up with all the accessories switched off until the engine coolant temperature stabilizes (b).
  3. Run the engine at an engine speed of between 2500 RPM and 3000 RPM for at least 3 minutes (c).
  4. While running the engine at 3000 RPM for 2 seconds, and then 2000 RPM for 2 seconds, check the waveforms of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors using the Techstream (d).

HINT

  1. If either voltage output of the air fuel ratio or heated oxygen sensor does not fluctuate, or there is noise in the waveform of either sensor, the sensor may be malfunctioning.
  2. If the voltage outputs of both sensors remain lean or rich, the air-fuel ratio may be extremely lean or rich. In such cases, perform A/F Control using the Techstream.
  3. If the three-way catalytic converter has deteriorated, the heated oxygen sensor (located behind the three-way catalytic converter) voltage output fluctuates up and down frequently, even under normal driving conditions (active air-fuel ratio control is not performed).

HINT

  1. In contrast to normal malfunction diagnosis for components, circuits and systems, DTCs P1603 and P1605 are used to determine the malfunctioning area from the problem symptoms and freeze frame data when the user mentions problems such as engine stall. As these DTCs can be stored as a result of certain user actions, even if these DTCs are output, if the customer makes no mention of problems, clear these DTCs without performing any troubleshooting and return the vehicle to the customer.
  2. If any other DTCs are output, perform troubleshooting for those DTCs first.
  3. Use any information from the customer problem analysis about the condition of the vehicle at the time when the problem occurred (how the engine stopped, conditions when the engine was restarted, etc.) as a reference. Symptom Suspected Area Engine vibration occurs and engine stops Air-fuel ratio abnormal Engine stops with no engine vibration Ignition system, injection stoppage, high load from external parts Engine can be started with accelerator pedal depressed Insufficient air volume Rough idling after engine started Air-fuel ratio abnormal, abnormal combustion
  4. Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records engine conditions when a malfunction occurs. This information can be useful when troubleshooting.
  5. When confirming the freeze frame data, be sure to check all 5 sets of freeze frame data, refer to «FREEZE FRAME DATA»(ref-421952-S05337952652011092600000) .
  6. When DTC P1603 (Engine Stall History) is stored, DTC P1605 (Rough Idling) is also stored. When confirming freeze frame data, check DTC P1605. The ECM stores DTC P1605 first. Therefore, 5 sets of freeze frame data can be confirmed through DTC P1605, enabling the technician to obtain more information.
  7. When confirming freeze frame data, if there are multiple items related to the cause of the malfunction, perform troubleshooting for all related items.
  8. Try to operate the vehicle under the conditions recorded in the freeze frame data which were present when the malfunction occurred. Confirm the data at this time and the data when the engine is idling (engine warmed up, no load, and shift lever in D or N) and compare these data with the freeze frame data.
  9. Inspections take into account the fact that the malfunction may not have reoccurred and place emphasis on checking the vehicle conditions present at the time when the malfunction occurred.
  10. When performing inspections, jiggle the relevant wire harnesses and connectors in an attempt to reproduce malfunctions that do not always occur.

Inspection flow

Using freeze frame data, narrow down the parts to be inspected according to the vehicle conditions at the time when the malfunction occurred.

  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Read the DTCs, refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421952-S20670569172011092600000) . RESULT Result Proceed to Only DTC P1603 and P1605 are output A DTCs other than P1603 and P1605 are output B B --> See step 58 A: Go to next step
  2. READ FREEZE FRAME DATA Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Using the Techstream, confirm the vehicle conditions recorded in the freeze frame data which were present when the DTC was stored, refer to «FREEZE FRAME DATA»(ref-421952-S05337952652011092600000) . RESULT Problem Symptom Freeze Frame Data Item for DTC P1605 Suspected Area Proceed to Closed Throttle Position SW Engine Speed Total of Short FT and Long FT When idling or decelerating, engine speed slowly decreases and engine stalls All 5 sets of freeze frame data are ON Decreases slowly*1 All 5 sets of freeze frame data are +15% or more*2 Air suction Sensor malfunction (value from sensor too lean) Fuel supply problem A At least 1 of the 5 sets of freeze frame data is -15% or less*3 Sensor malfunction (value from sensor too rich) B All 5 sets of freeze frame data are from -15% to +15% Intake air volume insufficient Ignition timing incorrect C When idling or decelerating, engine speed rapidly decreases and engine stalls Decreases rapidly*1 - Injection stoppage, ignition stoppage Load from external parts D When accelerating or driving at constant speed, engine stalls*4 At least one is OFF - - Sensor malfunction Injection stoppage, ignition stoppage Fuel supply problem E HINT: *1: A rapid decrease in engine speed may be caused by an electrical fault in the shared wiring of all or a number of cylinders, an increase in load from external parts, etc. The engine speed is considered to have decreased rapidly if either of the following conditions applies. Otherwise, the engine speed is considered to have decreased slowly. In the freeze frame data, the decrease in engine speed from #3 to #5 is 400 RPM or more. In the freeze frame data, the engine speed at #5 is 120 RPM or less. If the vehicle speed is 30 km/h or less and the difference between Engine Speed and SPD (NT) is 100 RPM or less, inspect the automatic transmission. (Depending on the rate of vehicle deceleration, the engine speed may have decreased due to the A/T lock-up release being late.) *2: When a DTC is stored, feedback compensation increases because the air-fuel ratio is determined to be lean. *3: When a DTC is stored, feedback compensation decreases because the air-fuel ratio is determined to be rich. *4: This item should be checked when DTC P1603 is output and is not necessary to check when only P1605 is output. B --> See step 23 C --> See step 33 D --> See step 41 E --> See step 48 A: Go to next step
  3. CHECK INTAKE SYSTEM Check for air leakage in the intake system [vacuum hose disconnection, cracks, damaged gaskets, etc.], refer to «ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION - Step 1»(ref-422125-S11358849972011092600000) . HINT: If the accelerator pedal is released after racing the engine, the inspection is easier to perform because the vacuum inside the intake pipes increases and the air suction noise becomes louder. If Short FT and Long FT are largely different from the normal values when idling (the intake air volume is small) and almost the same as the normal values when racing the engine (the intake air volume is high), air leakage may be present. OK There is no air leakage. NG --> REPAIR OR REPLACE INTAKE SYSTEM OK: Go to next step
  4. CHECK PURGE VSV Disconnect the purge hose (on the canister side) of the purge VSV. Start the engine. Idle the engine. Disconnect the connector of the purge VSV. Check if air flows through the purge VSV. OK Air does not flow. Connect the connector of the purge VSV. Connect the purge hose of the purge VSV. HINT: When this inspection is performed, the MIL may illuminate. After finishing the inspection, check and clear DTCs, refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421952-S20670569172011092600000) . NG --> See step 59 OK: Go to next step
