Scheme 576: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Wait 5 seconds.
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code.
  8. Read Pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  10. Input the DTC: P0010.
  11. Check the DTC judgment result [B]. If the difference between the target and actual camshaft timing is more than the specified value, the ECM operates the VVT (Variable Valve Timing) actuator. Then, the ECM monitors the camshaft timing change for 5 seconds.

Scheme 578: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].
  7. Drive the vehicle at approximately 60 km/h (37 mph) for 10 minutes or more [C]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  8. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [D].
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [E].
  10. Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  12. Input the DTC: P0011 or P0012.
  13. Check the DTC judgment result.   14. Repeat the pattern of accelerating the vehicle from rest to approximately 60 km/h (37 mph) and then decelerating the vehicle 10 to 15 times [F]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws. HINT: Depress the accelerator pedal by a large amount.
  15. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [G].
  16. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [H].
  17. Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  18. Check the DTC judgment result again. HINT: If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal. If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction. If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform the following procedure.
  19. Perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs, refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421953-S17634125332011092600000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0011 OR P0012) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Read the DTCs. RESULT Result Proceed to DTC P0011 or P0012 is output A DTC P0011 or P0012 and other DTCs are output B HINT: If any DTCs other than P0011 or P0012 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first. B --> See step 9 A: Go to next step
  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Turn the A/C switch on. Warm up the engine. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1). Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly using the Techstream. OK Tester Operation Specified Condition 0% (OFF) Normal engine speed 127% (ON) Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after camshaft timing oil control valve switched from OFF to ON) HINT: Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1, VVT Change Angle #1], refer to «DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST»(ref-421953-S34024941762011092600000) . NG --> See step 4 OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs, refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421953-S17634125332011092600000) . Start the engine and warm it up. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream, refer to «CHECK MODE PROCEDURE»(ref-421953-S37177155462011092600000) . Allow the engine to idle for more than 1 minute. Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / DTC. Read the DTCs. RESULT Result Proceed to DTC is not output A DTC P0011 or P0012 is output B HINT: DTC P0011 or P0012 is stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes remain stored for a short time even after the system returns to normal. These foreign objects may then be captured by the oil control valve filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem. B --> See step 7 A --> See step 10
  4. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-421955-S27104242852011092600000) . Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1 and the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation. OK Valve moves quickly. Reinstall the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. NG --> See step 11 OK: Go to next step
  5. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING GEAR ASSEMBLY Inspect the camshaft timing gear assembly, refer to «REMOVAL - Step 20»(ref-422095-S29140587252011092600000) . NG --> See step 12 OK: Go to next step
  6. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER Remove the oil control valve filter. Check that the filter is not clogged. OK Filter is not clogged. Reinstall the oil control valve filter. NG --> REPLACE OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER OK: Go to next step
  7. ADJUST VALVE TIMING HINT: There are no marks on the cylinder head to align for the purpose of checking valve timing. Valve timing can only be inspected by aligning the colored plates on the timing chain with the marks on the pulleys. It may be necessary to remove and reinstall the chain to align the timing marks, refer to «INSTALLATION - Step 5»(ref-422095-S31729269002011092600000) . NEXT: Go to next step
  8. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0011 OR P0012) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. FAIL-SAFE

When any of these DTCs as well as other DTCs relating to ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) malfunctions are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator and the throttle valve is returned to a 6.5° opening angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected and the ignition switch is turned off.

  7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 15 minutes [B]. HINT: Data can be captured relatively easily by using the snapshot function in the Data List. Enter the following menus: Data List / Function / Snap-shot configuration / Record time / 5 min. Data capture can be started by using the target point. For example, setting the target point to an engine speed of 4000 RPM and then racing the engine, etc. to raise the engine speed to a speed of 4000 RPM or more will cause data capture to start.

Note. This Air Injection Check only allows technicians to operate the AIR system for a maximum of 5 seconds. Furthermore, the check can only be performed up to 4 times per trip. If the test is repeated, intervals of at least 30 seconds are required between checks. While AIR system operation using the Techstream is prohibited, the Techstream display indicates the prohibition (WAIT or ERROR). If ERROR is displayed on the Techstream during the test, stop the engine for 10 minutes, and then try again. Performing the Air Injection Check repeatedly may cause damage to the AIR system. If necessary, leave an interval of several minutes between System Check operations to prevent the system from overheating. When performing the Air Injection Check operation after the battery cable has been reconnected, wait for 7 minutes with the ignition switch turned to ON or the engine running. Warm up the engine at an engine speed of 2500 RPM for approximately 90 seconds. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor. Perform the Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation with the engine idling (press the RIGHT or LEFT button to change the fuel injection volume). Monitor the voltage outputs of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors (AFS Voltage B1S1 and O2S B1S2) displayed on the Techstream. HINT: The Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation lowers the fuel injection volume by 12.5% or increases the injection volume by 25%. Each sensor reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in the fuel injection volume. Lean/Rich: During Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor of the Active Test, the output voltages of the air fuel ratio sensor and heated oxygen sensor alternate correctly.   4. REPLACE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (TWC: FRONT CATALYST AND REAR CATALYST) Replace the front exhaust pipe assembly, refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-422105-S03173197242011092600000) . NEXT: Go to next step
  5. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs, refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421953-S17634125332011092600000) . Drive the vehicle at a speed between 64 km/h and 113 km/h (40 mph and 70 mph) for at least 10 minutes. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / DTC. Read the DTCs (Pending DTCs). Result Pending DTC is not output NEXT --> END
