- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.

- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].

- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
- Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
- Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
- Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].
- Drive the vehicle at approximately 60 km/h (37 mph) for 10 minutes or more [C]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
- Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [D].
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [E].
- Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
- Input the DTC: P0011 or P0012.

- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly, refer to «INSPECTION»(ref-421955-S27104242852011092600000) . Connect the positive (+) battery terminal to terminal 1 and the negative (-) battery terminal to terminal 2. Check the valve operation. OK Valve moves quickly. FAIL-SAFE
When any of these DTCs as well as other DTCs relating to ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) malfunctions are stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator and the throttle valve is returned to a 6.5° opening angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.
The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected and the ignition switch is turned off.

- Stop the engine and allow it to soak.
- Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
- Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Coolant Temp and Intake Air.
- Check that "Coolant Temp" is 56°C (133°F) or less and "Intake Air" is between 0 and 35°C (0 and 95°F).
- Set the heater to MAX HOT with fresh air mode selected and turn the A/C off.
- Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 15 minutes [B]. HINT: Data can be captured relatively easily by using the snapshot function in the Data List. Enter the following menus: Data List / Function / Snap-shot configuration / Record time / 5 min. Data capture can be started by using the target point. For example, setting the target point to an engine speed of 4000 RPM and then racing the engine, etc. to raise the engine speed to a speed of 4000 RPM or more will cause data capture to start.
- After driving the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) and "Coolant Temp" stabilizes, check that "Coolant Temp" is 70°C (158°F) or higher [C]. HINT: IF "Coolant Temp" is below 70°C (158°F) while driving the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph), inspect the cooling system and thermostat.
- CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0128) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Note. This Air Injection Check only allows technicians to operate the AIR system for a maximum of 5 seconds. Furthermore, the check can only be performed up to 4 times per trip. If the test is repeated, intervals of at least 30 seconds are required between checks. While AIR system operation using the Techstream is prohibited, the Techstream display indicates the prohibition (WAIT or ERROR). If ERROR is displayed on the Techstream during the test, stop the engine for 10 minutes, and then try again. Performing the Air Injection Check repeatedly may cause damage to the AIR system. If necessary, leave an interval of several minutes between System Check operations to prevent the system from overheating. - Check if any DTCs (pending DTCs) are stored.
If Catalyst does not change to Complete, and no pending DTCs are stored, extend the driving time.
- CHECK FOR ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT (IN ADDITION TO DTC P0420) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes. Read DTCs. RESULT Result Proceed to DTC P0420 is output A DTC P0420 and other DTCs are output B HINT: If any DTCs other than P0420 are output, troubleshoot those DTCs first. B --> See step 6 A: Go to next step
- PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (INJECTION VOLUME CONTROL) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine and turn the Techstream on. Warm up the engine at an engine speed of 2500 RPM for approximately 90 seconds. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor. Perform the Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation with the engine idling (press the RIGHT or LEFT button to change the fuel injection volume). Monitor the voltage outputs of the air fuel ratio and heated oxygen sensors (AFS Voltage B1S1 and O2S B1S2) displayed on the Techstream. HINT: The Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor operation lowers the fuel injection volume by 12.5% or increases the injection volume by 25%. Each sensor reacts in accordance with increases and decreases in the fuel injection volume. Rich: During Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor, the AFS voltage is consistently below 3.1 V, and the O2S voltage is consistently higher than 0.55 V. Lean/Rich: During Control the Injection Volume for A/F sensor of the Active Test, the output voltages of the air fuel ratio sensor and heated oxygen sensor alternate correctly. - INSPECT FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK Inspect for exhaust gas leakage. OK No gas leakage. NG --> REPAIR OR REPLACE EXHAUST GAS LEAK POINT OK: Go to next step
- REPLACE FRONT EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY (TWC: FRONT CATALYST AND REAR CATALYST) Replace the front exhaust pipe assembly, refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-422105-S03173197242011092600000) . NEXT: Go to next step
- CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on. Clear the DTCs, refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421953-S17634125332011092600000) . Drive the vehicle at a speed between 64 km/h and 113 km/h (40 mph and 70 mph) for at least 10 minutes. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / DTC. Read the DTCs (Pending DTCs). Result Pending DTC is not output NEXT --> END
- GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-421953-S08108164442011092600000)
- REPLACE AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-421955-S25491508152011092600000)
- CHECK EXTREMELY RICH OR LEAN ACTUAL AIR FUEL RATIO, REPAIR CAUSE AND GO TO STEP 3. Refer to «DTC P0171: System Too Lean (Bank 1); DTC P0172: System Too Rich (Bank 1)»(ref-422141-S29714303582011092600000)
- INSPECT FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAK Inspect for exhaust gas leakage. OK No gas leakage. NG --> REPAIR OR REPLACE EXHAUST GAS LEAK POINT OK --> See step 10
- REPLACE HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-421955-S02330336742011092600000)
