Scheme 396: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear the DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Wait 5 seconds.
  7. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Code.
  8. Read Pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  10. Input the DTC: P0010 or P0020.
  11. Check the DTC judgment result [B]. PROCEDURE

  1. CHECK DTC Clear the DTCs after recording the freeze frame data and DTCs. Turn the ignition switch off. Allow the engine to idle and check for DTCs. Check that P0010 or P0020 is output. OK P0010 or P0020 is output. NG --> CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS OK: Go to next step
  2. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly (for Intake Side of Bank 1, 2). Refer to «INSPECTION - Step 1»(ref-421954-S15004613002011092600000) . NG --> REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK HARNESS AND CONNECTOR (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY - ECM) Disconnect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly connector. Disconnect the ECM connector. Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below. RETARDED CAMSHAFT TIMING

If the difference between the target and actual camshaft timing is more than the specified value, the ECM operates the VVT actuator. Then, the ECM monitors the camshaft timing change for 5 seconds.

Scheme 398: CONFIRMATION DRIVING PATTERN
  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on.
  3. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the engine coolant temperature reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].
  7. Drive the vehicle at approximately 60 km/h (37 mph) for 10 minutes or more [C]. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws.
  8. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [D].
  9. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [E].
  10. Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  11. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Utility / All Readiness.
  12. Input the DTC: P0011, P0012, P0021 or P0022.
  13. Check the DTC judgment result. WARNING: When performing the confirmation driving pattern, obey all speed limits and traffic laws. HINT: Depress the accelerator pedal by a large amount.
  15. Idle the engine for 3 minutes or more [G].
  16. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [H].
  17. Read pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.
  18. Check the DTC judgment result again. HINT: If the judgment result shows NORMAL, the system is normal. If the judgment result shows ABNORMAL, the system has a malfunction. If the judgment result shows INCOMPLETE or UNKNOWN, perform the following procedure.
  19. Perform a universal trip and check for permanent DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421952-S20670569172011092600000) . HINT: If a permanent DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If no permanent DTC is output, the system is normal.

  2. PERFORM ACTIVE TEST USING TECHSTREAM (OPERATE CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Warm up the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Turn the A/C switch on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Active Test / Control the VVT Linear (Bank 1) or Control the VVT Linear (Bank 2). Check the engine speed while operating the camshaft timing oil control valve using the Techstream. OK Techstream Operation Specified Condition 0% (OFF) Normal engine speed 127% (ON) Engine idles roughly or stalls (soon after camshaft timing oil control valve switched from OFF to ON) HINT: Refer to "Data List / Active Test" [VVT OCV Duty #1, VVT Change Angle #1, VVT OCV Duty #2 and VVT Change Angle #2]. Refer to «DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST»(ref-421952-S15138037352011092600000) . NG --> See step 5 OK: Go to next step
  3. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS (DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 OR P0025) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the Techstream on. Clear DTCs. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-421952-S20670569172011092600000) . Warm up the engine. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream. Refer to «CHECK MODE PROCEDURE»(ref-421952-S25071577192011092600000) . Drive the vehicle in accordance with the driving pattern described in Confirmation Driving Pattern. Read DTCs using the Techstream. OK No DTC output. NG --> See step 5 OK --> END
  4. GO TO DTC CHART. Refer to «DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE CHART»(ref-421952-S27905813582011092600000)
  5. CHECK VALVE TIMING (CHECK FOR LOOSE TEETH AND WHETHER TIMING CHAIN HAS JUMPED TOOTH) Remove the cylinder head cover RH and LH. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 Timing Mark Turn the crankshaft pulley and align its groove with the "0" timing mark on the timing chain cover. Check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration. If not, turn the crankshaft 1 revolution (360°), and then align the marks as above. OK Timing marks on camshaft timing gears are aligned as shown in the illustration. Reinstall the cylinder head cover RH and LH. NG --> See step 10 OK: Go to next step
  6. INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSEMBLY (CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE FOR EXHAUST CAMSHAFT) Inspect the camshaft timing oil control valve assembly. Refer to «INSPECTION - Step 1»(ref-421954-S15004613002011092600000) . NG --> See step 11 OK: Go to next step
  7. INSPECT OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND PIPE Remove the oil pipe No. 1 or No. 2. TEXT IN ILLUSTRATION *1 No. 1 Oil Pipe *2 No. 2 Oil Pipe Remove the oil control valve filter. Check that the filter and pipe are not clogged. OK The filter and pipe are not clogged. Reinstall the oil control valve filter. Reinstall the oil pipe No. 1 or No. 2. NG --> CLEAN OIL CONTROL VALVE FILTER AND PIPE OK: Go to next step
  8. REPLACE CAMSHAFT TIMING EXHAUST GEAR ASSEMBLY Replace the camshaft timing exhaust gear assembly. Refer to «REMOVAL»(ref-422094-S36590258942011092600000) . NEXT: Go to next step
  9. CHECK WHETHER DTC OUTPUT RECURS Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the Techstream on. Clear DTCs. Warm up the engine. Switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode using the Techstream. Refer to «CHECK MODE PROCEDURE»(ref-421952-S25071577192011092600000) . Drive the vehicle for more than 10 minutes or more. Read output DTCs using the Techstream. OK No DTC output. HINT: DTC P0014, P0015, P0024 or P0025 is stored when foreign objects in the engine oil are caught in some parts of the system. These codes will remain stored even if the system returns to normal after a short time. These foreign objects are then captured by the oil filter, thus eliminating the source of the problem. NG --> See step 12 OK --> SYSTEM IS OK

  4. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 30 seconds.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to ON and turn the Techstream on [A].
  6. Start the engine and warm it up until the ECT reaches 75°C (167°F) or higher [B].
  7. Idle the engine for 5 minutes or more [C].
  8. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Trouble Codes [D].
  9. Read the pending DTCs. HINT: If a pending DTC is output, the system is malfunctioning. If a pending DTC is not output, perform the following procedure.

Check that the timing marks on the camshaft timing gears are aligned with the timing marks of the bearing cap as shown in the illustration. Scheme 408: DESCRIPTION
  1. The intake air temperature sensor, mounted on the mass air flow meter, monitors the intake air temperature. The intake air temperature sensor has a built-in thermistor with a resistance that varies according to the temperature of the intake air. When the intake air temperature is low, the resistance of the thermistor increases. When the temperature is high, the resistance drops. These variations in resistance are transmitted to the ECM as voltage changes see scheme 1
  2. The intake air temperature sensor is powered by a 5 V supply from the THA terminal of the ECM, via resistor R.
  3. Resistor R and the intake air temperature sensor are connected in series. When the resistance value of the intake air temperature sensor changes according to changes in the intake air temperature, the voltage at terminal THA also varies. Based on this signal, the ECM increases the fuel injection volume when the engine is cold to improve driveability. HINT: When either DTC P0112 or P0113 is stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the intake air temperature is estimated to be 20°C (68°F) by the ECM. The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected.

FAIL-SAFE

When any of these DTCs as well as other DTCs relating to ETCS (Electronic Throttle Control System) malfunctions are set, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 7° opening angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in accordance with the accelerator pedal position to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

The ECM continues operating in fail-safe mode until a pass condition is detected and the ignition switch is turned off.

  6. Set the heater to MAX HOT with fresh air mode selected and turn the A/C off.
  7. Start the engine and drive the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) for 15 minutes [B]. HINT: Data can be captured relatively easily by using the snapshot function in the Data List. Enter the following menus: Data List / Function / Snap-shot configuration / Record time / 5 min. Data capture can be started by using the target point. For example, setting the target point to an engine speed of 4000 RPM and then racing the engine, etc. to raise the engine speed to a speed of 4000 RPM or more will cause data capture to start.
  8. After driving the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph) and "Coolant Temp" stabilizes, check that "Coolant Temp" is 75°C (167°F) or higher [C]. HINT: IF "Coolant Temp" is below 75°C (167°F) while driving the vehicle at 80 km/h (50 mph), inspect the cooling system and thermostat.

  1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
  3. Turn the Techstream on.
  4. Record the DTCs and freeze frame data.
  5. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
  6. Using the Techstream, switch the ECM from normal mode to check mode. Refer to «CHECK MODE PROCEDURE»(ref-421952-S25071577192011092600000) .
  7. Read the misfire counts of each cylinder (cylinder No. 1 to No. 6) with the engine idling. If any misfire count is displayed, skip the following confirmation driving pattern.
  8. Drive the vehicle several times with the conditions, such as engine speed and engine load, as shown in Misfire RPM and Misfire Load in the Data List. HINT: In order to store misfire DTCs, it is necessary to operate the vehicle for the period of time shown in the table below, using the Misfire RPM and Misfire Load in the Data List.   9. Check whether misfires have occurred by checking DTCs and freeze frame data. HINT: Do not turn the ignition switch off until the stored DTCs and freeze frame data have been recorded.   10. Record the DTCs, freeze frame data and misfire counts.
  11. Turn the ignition switch off and wait for at least 5 seconds.
  12. Clear DTCs (even if no DTCs are stored, perform the clear DTC operation).
