Precautions for Disassembly and Reassembly

As the CVT consists of high precision component, the following cautions should be strictly observed when handling its parts in disassembly and reassembly.

  1. Never disassemble the transaxle except where indicated in this section. Otherwise, disassembly will spoil its original performance.
  2. When CVT assembly have been replaced, all learned contents, which have been stored in TCM memory by executing learning control should be initialized see «TCM Learning Control Initialization»(ref-514590-S28483768442012112100000) .
  3. Make sure to wash dirt off from the transaxle so that no such dirt will enter the transaxle during dismounting and remounting.
  4. When servicing, select a clean place free from dust and dirt.
  5. Place a rubber mat on the work bench to protect parts from damage.
  6. Use lint-free paper not cloth rags.
  7. Replace each gasket, oil seal and O-ring with a new one.
  8. Keep component parts in group for each subassembly and avoid mixing them up.
  9. Clean all parts with cleaning solvent thoroughly and air dry them.
  10. Keep face and eyes away from solvent spray while air blowing parts.
  11. Check mating surface for irregularities and remove them, if any, and clean it again.
  12. Apply CVT fluid to all O-rings.
  13. Replace oil seals that are removed and apply grease to their lips.

CVT Assembly Dismounting and Remounting

WARNINGIf the transaxle assembly is tilted with the torque converter end down, the torque converter can fall off the transaxle, which could cause personal injury. Be sure to keep the transaxle assembly horizontal or tilted with the torque converter end up throughout the operation.

Scheme 85: Dismounting
  1. Dismount transaxle with engine. See «ENGINE ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-514568-S18932907842012112100000)
  2. For 2WD model, remove engine rear mounting No. 1 bracket and engine rear mounting No. 2 bracket with stiffener. See «ENGINE MOUNTINGS COMPONENTS»(ref-514568-S26650602902012112100000)
  3. Remove front drive shaft. See «FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-514599-S06713669722012112100000)
  4. For 4WD model, remove transfer. See «TRANSFER DISMOUNTING AND REMOUNTING»(ref-514591-S33495817022012112100000)
  5. For 2WD model, remove center shaft. See «FRONT DRIVE SHAFT ASSEMBLY REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-514599-S06713669722012112100000)
  6. Remove drive plate cover. See «OIL PAN AND OIL PUMP STRAINER REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-514578-S29412339732012112100000)
  7. Remove torque converter No. 1 and No. 2 bolt as follows. Insert flat-head rod or the like (2) to hole (3) of transaxle case as shown in figure. Lock drive plate (1), engage a flat-head rod or the like (2) with gear of drive plate as shown figure. Remove torque converter No. 1 or No. 2 bolt through drive plate cover opening. Turn crankshaft by 60° by turning crankshaft pulley bolt using wrench. Repeat Step a ) through c ) for 5 times.
  8. Remove starting motor. See «STARTING MOTOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION»(ref-514602-S10275098202012112100000)
  9. Remove bolts and nut fastening engine and transaxle, then detach transaxle from engine. NOTE: When detaching transaxle from engine, move it in parallel with crankshaft and use care so as not to apply excessive force to drive plate and torque converter.

Scheme 86: Remounting
  1. Make sure that torque converter is installed correctly to transaxle. See «Input Shaft Oil Seal Replacement»(ref-514590-S40550291262012112100000)
  2. Attach transaxle to engine.
  3. Tighten bolts and nut to specified torque. See «CVT Assembly Components»(ref-514590-S14739632862012112100000)
  4. Tighten torque converter No. 1 and No. 2 bolt as follows. NOTE: Torque converter No. 1 bolt is used for accurate positioning. Tighten the torque converter No. 1 bolt first so that the bolt holes for torque converter and drive plate are positioned properly, and that the torque converter No. 2 bolt is tightened securely. One torque converter No. 1 bolt and five torque converter No. 2 bolts are required to secure the torque converter and drive plate. Align bolt hole of drive plate with bolt hole of torque converter by turning crankshaft. Tighten torque converter No. 1 bolt by hand through drive plate cover opening. Turn crankshaft by 60° by turning crankshaft pulley bolt using wrench. Tighten torque converter No. 2 bolt by hand through drive plate cover opening. Repeat Step c ) through d ) for 4 times. Insert flat-head rod or the like (2) to hole (3) of transaxle case as shown in figure. Lock drive plate (1), engage a flat-head rod or the like (2) with gear of drive plate as shown in figure. Tighten torque converter No. 1 or No. 2 bolt to specified torque. Tightening torque Torque converter No. 1 and No. 2 bolt (a): 23 N.m (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 lbf-ft) Turn crankshaft by 60° by turning crankshaft pulley bolt using wrench. Repeat Step f ) through h ) for 5 times.
