CVT Fluid Check

CAUTIONFailure to take the following precautions when checking the CVT fluid may cause failure of the CVT. Do not use any fluid other than the specified CVT fluid. Use of any other fluids may cause juddering or other faulty conditions. Avoid overfilling the CVT. If the CVT is filled with too much fluid, the fluid can foam and flow out through the breather. The resulting loss of fluid may cause slippage and failure of the transaxle. Use only lint-free paper for wiping. Do not use cloth or rags. Do not reuse CVT fluid. Replace CVT fluid when the CVT assembly is replaced and also when the vehicle has been driven under excessively high load.

Note. Be sure to perform CVT fluid level check before checking any service on CVT. Do not replenish or drain CVT fluid before each test.

  1. Turn off ignition switch and connect SUZUKI scan tool to DLC (1) located on underside of instrument panel at driver's side. Special Tool (A): SUZUKI scan tool (SUZUKI-SDT)
  2. Display "Data List" mode on SUZUKI scan tool.
  3. Drive vehicle so that CVT fluid temperature reaches normal operating temperature (70 - 80 °C (158 - 176 °F)). NOTE: Engine coolant temperature is rise when racing engine at "P" or "N" range. But CVT fluid temperature does not rise at "P" or "N" range. Be sure to drive vehicle in order to rise CVT fluid temperature.
  4. Stop vehicle with engine running and place it level.
  5. With select lever at "P" range, apply parking brake and place chocks against wheels.
  6. Keep engine idling, depress brake pedal fully and select lever slowly to "D" and back to "P" position.
  7. With engine idling and A/C switch turned off, pull out fluid level gauge (1), wipe it off with lint-free paper towel and put it back into place.
  8. Pull out fluid level gauge (1) again and check CVT fluid level indicated on it. Lowest fluid level should be between full hot (2) and low hot (3). If it is below low hot, add specified CVT fluid up to full hot. CVT fluid specification : SUZUKI CVT FLUID GREEN 1 or Shell GREEN-1 V NOTE: Do not race engine while checking fluid level, even after engine start. Bringing level from low hot to full hot requires 0.6 liters (1.27/1.06 US/Imp. pt.). If vehicle was driven under high load such as pulling trailer, fluid level should be checked about half an hour after it is stopped. Check lower position of fluid on both sides of level gauge. If smell of burning, discoloration or heavy dirt is present in CVT fluid, replacement of CVT assembly will be required.

  1. Lift up vehicle.
  2. When engine is cool, remove CVT fluid drain plug (1) from CVT oil pan (2) and drain CVT fluid.
  3. Install CVT fluid drain plug (1) with new gasket and then tighten it to specified torque. Tightening torque CVT fluid drain plug (a): 34 N.m (3.5 kg-m, 25.0 lbf-ft)
  4. Lower vehicle and replenish proper amount of specified CVT fluid. CVT fluid specification : SUZUKI CVT FLUID GREEN 1 or Shell GREEN-1 V CVT fluid capacity Reference: 8.0 liters (16.91 / 14.08 US/Imp pt.).
  5. Check CVT fluid level, see «CVT Fluid Check»(ref-514590-S18157453952012112100000) .
  6. Check drain plug for CVT fluid leakage.
