  1. Measure all valve clearances. < Ref. to «INSPECTION»(ref-273767-S09966132522007121100000), Valve Clearance. > NOTE: Record each valve clearance after it has been measured. see scheme 21: Measuring Valve Clearances
  2. Remove the camshaft. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273767-S40752932392007121100000), Camshaft. >
  3. Remove the valve lifter.
  4. Measure the thickness of valve lifter with a micrometer. see scheme 22: Measuring Thickness Of Valve Lifter With Micrometer
  5. Select a shim of suitable thickness using measured valve clearance and valve lifter thickness, by referring to the following table.   6. Inspect all valves for clearance again at this stage. If the valve clearance is not correct, repeat the procedure over again from the first step.
  7. After inspection, install the related parts in the reverse order of removal.

  1. Set the vehicle on a lift.
  2. Open the front hood fully, and then support with the hood stay.
  3. Collect the refrigerant from A/C system. < Ref. to «REFRIGERANT RECOVERY PROCEDURE»(ref-273760-S36439678552007121100000). >
  4. Release the fuel pressure. < Ref. to «RELEASING OF FUEL PRESSURE»(ref-273758-S03457317292007121100000), PROCEDURE, Fuel. > Disconnect the fuel pump relay connector. see scheme 23: Locating Fuel Pump Relay Connector Start the engine, and run until stalls. After the engine stalls, crank it for 5 seconds more. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
  5. Remove the fuel filler cap.
  6. Disconnect the ground cable from battery.
  7. Remove the radiator from vehicle. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273773-S32751383692007121100000), Radiator. >
  8. Remove the coolant filler tank. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273773-S05723498852007121100000), Coolant Filler Tank. >
  9. Remove the secondary air pump. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273774-S04798545052007121100000), Secondary Air Pump. >
  10. Disconnect the A/C pressure hoses from A/C compressor. see scheme 24: Identifying A/C Pressure Hoses
  11. Remove the intercooler. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273766-S38209735732007121100000), Intercooler. >
  12. Disconnect the following connectors and cable. Engine harness connector see scheme 25: Identifying Engine Harness Connector Engine ground terminal see scheme 26: Identifying Engine Ground Terminal Engine harness connector see scheme 27: Identifying Engine Harness Connector Generator connector, terminal and A/C compressor connectors see scheme 28: Identifying Generator Connector, Terminal And A/C Compressor Connectors Power steering switch connector see scheme 29: Locating Power Steering Switch Connector
  13. Disconnect the following hoses. Brake booster vacuum hose see scheme 30: Locating Brake Booster Vacuum Hose Heater inlet and outlet hose
  14. Remove the power steering pump. Remove the front side V-belt. < Ref. to «FRONT SIDE BELT»(ref-273767-S21182754472007121100000), REMOVAL, V-belt. > Remove the power steering pipe with bracket from fuel pipe protector RH. see scheme 31: Locating Power Steering Pipe With Bracket Remove the power steering pump. see scheme 32: Identifying Power Steering Pump Remove the reservoir tank from bracket by pulling it upward. see scheme 33: Locating Reservoir Tank Place the power steering pump on right side wheel apron. see scheme 34: Identifying Power Steering Pump
  15. Lift-up the vehicle.
  16. Remove the ATF cooler pipe from frame. (AT model)
  17. Remove the center exhaust pipe. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273775-S11630436142007121100000), Center Exhaust Pipe. >
  18. Remove the nuts which hold the lower side of transmission to engine. see scheme 35: Locating Transmission Engine Nut
  19. Remove the nuts which install the front cushion rubber onto front crossmember. see scheme 36: Locating Front Crossmember Nuts
  20. Separate the clutch release fork from release bearing. (MT model) < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273763-S16159180162007121100000), Release Bearing and Lever. >
  21. Separate the torque converter clutch from drive plate. (AT model) Lower the vehicle. Remove the service hole plug. Remove the bolts which hold the torque converter clutch to drive plate. While rotating the crank pulley in the direction of engine rotation little by little using a socket wrench, remove all the bolts. see scheme 37: Holding Torque Converter
  22. Remove the pitching stopper. see scheme 38: Identifying Pitching Stopper
  23. Using ST, disconnect fuel hoses from fuel pipes. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273758-S17443551852007121100000), Fuel Delivery, Return and Evaporation lines. > CAUTION: Be careful not to spill fuel.   24. Support the engine with a lifting device and wire ropes. (Scheme 280): Lifting Engine With Wire Ropes
  25. Support the transmission with a garage jack. CAUTION: Before moving the engine away from transmission, check to be sure no work has been overlooked. Doing this is very important in order to facilitate re-installation and because transmission lowers under its own weight. (Scheme 281): Supporting Transmission With Garage Jack
  26. Separation of the engine and transmission Remove the starter. < Ref. to «REMOVAL»(ref-273752-S28619755232007121100000), Starter. > Install the ST to torque converter clutch case. (AT model) ST 498277200 STOPPER SET see scheme 42: Identifying Stopper Set ST 498277200 On Torque Converter Remove the bolts which hold the right upper side of transmission to engine. (Scheme 282): Identifying Engine Transmission Bolts - Right Upper Side
  27. Remove the engine from vehicle. Slightly raise the engine. Raise the transmission with garage jack. Move the engine horizontally until the main-shaft is withdrawn from clutch cover. Slowly move the engine away from engine compartment. NOTE: Be careful not to damage adjacent parts or body panels with crank pulley, oil pressure gauge, etc.
  28. Remove the front cushion rubbers.

  1. Install the clutch release fork and bearing to transmission. (MT model) < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273763-S34137360682007121100000), Release Bearing and Lever. >
  2. Install the front cushion rubbers to engine. Tightening torque: 35 N.m (3.6 kgf-m, 25.8 ft-lb)
  3. Install the engine onto transmission. Position the engine in engine compartment, and then align it with the transmission. NOTE: Be careful not to damage the adjacent parts or body panels with crank pulley, oil pressure gauge, etc. Apply a small amount of grease to the splines of mainshaft. (MT model)
  4. Tighten the bolts which hold the right upper side of transmission to engine. Tightening torque: 50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lb) (Scheme 283): Identifying Engine Transmission Bolts - Right Upper Side
  5. Remove the lifting device and wire ropes. (Scheme 284): Lifting Engine With Wire Ropes
  6. Remove the garage jack.
  7. Install the pitching stopper. Tightening torque: T1:50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lb) T2: 58 N.m (5.9 kgf-m, 43 ft-lb) (Scheme 285): Identifying Pitching Stopper
  8. Remove the ST from torque converter clutch case. (AT model) NOTE: Be careful not to drop the ST into torque converter clutch case when removing ST. ST 498277200 STOPPER SET
  9. Install the starter. < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273752-S26905137102007121100000), Starter. >
  10. Install the torque converter clutch onto drive plate. (AT model) Tighten the bolts which hold the torque converter clutch to drive plate. While rotating the crank pulley in the direction of engine rotation little by little using a socket wrench, remove all the bolts. CAUTION: Be careful not to drop bolts into the torque converter clutch housing. Tightening torque: 25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.4 ft-lb) (Scheme 286): Holding Torque Converter Install the service hole plug.
  11. Install the power steering pump on bracket. Install the power steering tank on bracket. (Scheme 287): Locating Reservoir Tank Install the power steering pump. Tightening torque: 20.1 N.m (2.05 kgf-m, 14.8 ft-lb) (Scheme 288): Identifying Power Steering Pump Install the power steering pipe bracket on intake manifold RH. (Scheme 289): Locating Power Steering Pipe With Bracket Install the front side V-belt, and adjust it. < Ref. to «FRONT SIDE BELT»(ref-273767-S21182754472007121100000), INSTALLATION, V-belt. >
  12. Lift-up the vehicle.
  13. Tighten the nuts which hold the lower side of transmission to engine. Tightening torque: 50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lb) (Scheme 290): Identifying Engine Transmission Nuts - Lower Side
  14. Tighten the nuts which install the front cushion rubber onto crossmember. Tightening torque: 85 N.m (8.7 kgf-m, 62.7 ft-lb) NOTE: Make sure the front cushion rubber mounting bolts (A) and locator (B) are securely installed. (Scheme 291): Identifying Front Cushion Rubber Mounting Bolts
  15. Install the ATF cooler pipe to frame. (AT model)
  16. Install the center exhaust pipe. < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273775-S31375131692007121100000), Center Exhaust Pipe. >
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Connect the following hoses: Fuel delivery hose, return hose and evaporation hose Heater inlet and outlet hoses Brake booster vacuum hose
  19. Connect the following connectors and terminals: Engine ground terminal Engine harness connectors Generator connector and terminal A/C compressor connectors Power steering switch connector
  20. After connecting each cable, adjust them.
  21. Install the air intake system. Install the intercooler. < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273766-S18871710292007121100000), Intercooler. > Install the air cleaner element and air cleaner upper cover. Install the engine harness connector bracket. Install the filler hose to air cleaner case.
  22. Install the A/C pressure hoses. NOTE: Use new O-rings. Tightening torque: 15 N.m (1.5 kgf-m, 10.8 ft-lb) (Scheme 292): Identifying A/C Pressure Hoses
  23. Install the radiator. < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273773-S24100567802007121100000), Radiator. >
  24. Install the coolant filler tank. < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273773-S29149298562007121100000), Coolant Filler Tank. >
  25. Install the secondary air pump. < Ref. to «INSTALLATION»(ref-273774-S03811313422007121100000), Secondary Air Pump. >
  26. Install the battery in the vehicle, and then connect the cables.
  27. Fill engine coolant. < Ref. to «FILLING OF ENGINE COOLANT»(ref-273773-S07599340642007121100000), REPLACEMENT, Engine Coolant. >
  28. Charge the A/C system with refrigerant. < Ref. to «PROCEDURE»(ref-273760-S23381968512007121100000), Refrigerant Charging Procedure. >
  29. Remove the front hood stay, and close the front hood.
  30. Take off the vehicle from lift arms.
