- Remove the camshaft. REMOVAL CAMSHAFT.>
- Remove the valve lifter.
- Measure the thickness of valve lifter using micrometer. see scheme 26: Measuring Thickness Of Valve Lifter Using Micrometer
- Select a valve lifter of suitable thickness from the following table using the measured valve clearance and valve lifter thickness. - Inspect all valves for clearance again at this stage. If the valve clearance is not correct, repeat the procedure over again from the first step.
- After inspection, install the related parts in the reverse order of removal.

- Set the vehicle on a lift.
- Open the front hood fully and support with the front food stay.
- Remove the collector cover.
- Collect the refrigerant from A/C system. REFRIGERANT RECOVERY PROCEDURE. >
- Release the fuel pressure. RELEASING OF FUEL PRESSURE PROCEDURE, Fuel.>
- Disconnect the ground cable from battery. see scheme 27: Disconnecting Battery Ground Cable
- Open the fuel filler flap lid, and remove the filler cap.
- Remove the radiator from vehicle. REMOVAL Radiator.>
- Remove the coolant filler tank. REMOVAL Coolant Filler Tank. >
- Remove the secondary air pump. INSPECTION Secondary Air Pump.>
- Disconnect the A/C pressure hoses from A/C compressor. see scheme 28: Identifying A/C Pressure Hoses
- Remove the intercooler. REMOVAL Intercooler.>
- Disconnect the following connectors and cables. - Disconnect the following hoses. Brake booster vacuum hose see scheme 36: Locating Brake Booster Vacuum Hose Heater inlet and outlet hoses
- Remove the power steering pump. Remove the front side V-belt. FRONT SIDE BELT REMOVAL, V-BELT. > Remove the power steering pipe from the fuel pip protector RH along with the bracket. see scheme 37: Locating Bolts Securing Power Steering Pipe Brackets To Intake Manifold Remove the power steering pump. see scheme 38: Identifying Power Steering Pump Remove the reservoir tank from the bracket by pulling it upwards. see scheme 39: Locating Reservoir Tank Bracket Place the power steering pump on the right side wheel apron. see scheme 40: Identifying Power Steering Pump
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Remove the ATF cooler pipe from frame. (AT model)
- Remove the center exhaust pipe. REMOVAL Center Exhaust Pipe.>
- Remove the bolts and nuts which hold lower side of transmission to engine. see scheme 41: Locating Engine Transmission Nuts - Lower Side
- Remove the nuts which install front cushion rubber onto front crossmember. see scheme 42: Locating Front Crossmember Nuts
- Separate the torque converter clutch from drive plate. (AT model) Lower the vehicle. Remove the service hole plug. Remove the bolts which hold torque converter clutch to drive plate. Remove other bolts while rotating the engine using socket wrench. see scheme 43: Removing Bolts Holding Torque Converter Clutch To Drive Plate
- Remove the pitching stopper. see scheme 44: Locating Pitching Stopper
- Using the ST to remove the fuel hose from each fuel pipe. REMOVAL Fuel Delivery, Return and Evaporation Lines.> CAUTION: Be careful not to spill fuel. - Support the engine with a lifting device and wire ropes. (Scheme 282): Supporting Engine With Wire Ropes
- Support the transmission with a garage jack. CAUTION: Before removing the engine away from transmission, check to be sure no work has been overlooked. Doing this is very important because the transmission lowers for its own weight. This work is also of great importance for facilitating reinstallation. see scheme 47: Supporting Transmission With Garage Jack
- Separation of engine and transmission. Remove the starter. REMOVAL Starter.> Set the ST to torque converter clutch case. (AT model) ST 498277200 STOPPER SET (Scheme 283): Identifying Stopper Set ST 498277200 On Torque Converter Remove the bolts which hold upper side of transmission to engine. (Scheme 284): Locating Engine Transmission Bolts - Right Upper Side
- Remove the engine from vehicle. Slightly raise the engine. Raise the transmission with garage jack. Move the engine horizontally until main shaft is withdrawn from clutch cover. Slowly move the engine away from engine compartment. NOTE: Be careful not to damage adjacent parts or body panels with crank pulley, oil level gauge, etc. 28) Remove the front cushion rubbers.

- Install the front cushion rubbers. Tightening torque: 35 N.m (3.6 kgf-m, 25.8 ft-lb)
- Position the engine in engine compartment and align it with transmission. NOTE: Be careful not to damage adjacent parts or body panels with crank pulley, oil level gauge, etc.
- Apply a small amount of grease to splines of mainshaft. (MT model)
- Tighten the bolts which hold upper side of transmission to engine. Tightening torque: 50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb) (Scheme 285): Locating Engine Transmission Bolts - Right Upper Side
- Remove the lifting device and wire ropes. (Scheme 286): Supporting Engine With Wire Ropes
- Remove the garage jack.
- Install the pitching stopper. Tightening torque: T1: 50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 37 ft-lb) T2: 58 N.m (5.9 kgf-m, 43 ft-lb) (Scheme 287): Identifying Pitching Stopper Bolts
- Remove the ST from converter case. (AT model) CAUTION: Be careful not to drop the ST into the converter case when removing the ST. ST 498277200 STOPPER SET
- Install the starter. INSTALLATION Starter.>
- Install the torque converter clutch to drive plate. (AT model) Tighten the bolts which hold torque converter clutch to drive plate. Tighten other bolts while rotating the crankshaft using socket wrench. CAUTION: Be careful not to drop bolts into the torque converter clutch housing. Tightening torque: 25 N.m (2.5 kgf-m, 18.1 ft-lb) (Scheme 288): Tightening Bolts Holding Torque Converter Clutch To Drive Plate Install the service hole plug.
- Install the power steering pump. Install the reservoir tank to the bracket. (Scheme 289): Locating Reservoir Tank Bracket Install the power steering pump. Tightening torque: 20.1 N.m (2.05 kgf-m, 14.8 ft-lb) (Scheme 290): Identifying Power Steering Pump Install the power steering pipes onto the fuel pipe protector RH. (Scheme 291): Locating Bolts Securing Power Steering Pipe Brackets To Intake Manifold Install the front side V-belt and adjust it. FRONT SIDE BELT INSTALLATION, V-BELT.>
- Lift-up the vehicle.
- Tighten the nuts and bolts which hold lower side of transmission to engine. Tightening torque: 50 N.m (5.1 kgf-m, 36.9 ft-lb) (Scheme 292): Identifying Engine Transmission Nuts - Lower Side
- Tighten the nuts which install the front cushion rubber onto crossmember. Tightening torque: 85 N.m (8.7 kgf-m, 62.7 ft-lb) NOTE: Make sure the front cushion rubber mounting bolts (A) and locator (B) are securely installed. (Scheme 293): Identifying Front Cushion Rubber Mounting Bolts
- Install the ATF cooler pipe to frame. (AT model)
- Install the center exhaust pipe. INSTALLATION Center Exhaust Pipe.>
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the following hoses. Fuel delivery hose, return hose and evaporation hose Heater inlet and outlet hoses Brake booster vacuum hose
- Connect the following connectors and terminals. Engine ground terminal Engine harness connectors Generator connector and terminal A/C compressor connector Power steering switch connector
- Install the air intake system. Install the intercooler. INSTALLATION Intercooler.> Install the air cleaner element and air cleaner upper cover. Install the engine harness connector bracket. Install the filler hose to air cleaner case.
- Install the A/C pressure hoses. NOTE: Replace O-ring with a new one. Tightening torque: 15 N.m (1.5 kgf-m, 10.8 ft-lb) (Scheme 294): Identifying A/C Pressure Hoses
- Install the radiator. INSTALLATION Radiator.>
- Install the coolant filler tank. INSTALLATION Coolant Filler Tank.>
- Install the secondary air pump. INSTALLATION Secondary Air Pump.>
- Install the battery in the vehicle, and connect cables.
- Refill engine coolant. FILLING OF ENGINE COOLANT REPLACEMENT, Engine Coolant.>
- Charge the A/C system with refrigerant. PROCEDURE Refrigerant Charging Procedure.>
- Install the collector cover.
- Remove the front hood stay, and close the front hood.
- Take off the vehicle from lift.
