ROAD TEST
- PROBLEM SYMPTOM CONFIRMATION Based on the result of the customer problem analysis, try to reproduce the symptoms. If the problem is that the transaxle does not shift up or down, or the shift point is too high or too low, conduct the following road test referring to the automatic shift schedule and simulate the problem symptoms.
- ROAD TEST NOTE: Perform the test at the ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) temperature 50 to 80°C (122 to 176°F) in the normal operation. D position test: Shift into the D position and fully depress the accelerator pedal and check the following points. Check up-shift operation. Check that 1 --> 2, 2 --> 3 and 3 --> 4 up-shifts take place, and that the shift points conform to the automatic shift schedule. Refer to «SERVICE DATA»(ref-388694-S42164406022011031100000) . HINT: 4th Gear Up-shift Prohibition Control Engine coolant temperature is 40°C (104°F) or less. ATF temperature is 0°C (32°F) or less. 4th Gear Lock-up Prohibition Control Brake pedal is depressed. Accelerator pedal is released. Engine coolant temperature is 60°C (140°F) or less. ATF temperature is 10°C (50°F) or less. Check for shift shock and slip. Check for shock and slip at the 1 --> 2, 2 --> 3 and 3 --> 4 up-shifts. Check for abnormal noise and vibration. Check for abnormal noise and vibration when up-shifting from 1 --> 2, 2 --> 3 and 3 --> 4th while driving with the shift lever in the D position, and check while driving in the lock-up condition. HINT: The check for the cause of abnormal noise and vibration must be done thoroughly as it could also be due to loss of balance in the differential, torque converter clutch, etc. Check kick-down operation. Check vehicle speeds when the kick-down from 2 --> 1, 3 --> 2 and 4 --> 3 take place while driving with the shift lever in the D position. Confirm that each speed is within the applicable vehicle speed range indicated in the automatic shift schedule. Refer to «SERVICE DATA»(ref-388694-S42164406022011031100000) . Check abnormal shock and slip at kick-down. Check the lock-up mechanism. Drive in D position (4th gear), at a steady speed (lock-up ON). Lightly depress the accelerator pedal and check that the engine speed does not change abruptly. HINT: If there is a big jump in engine speed, there is no lock-up. 3 position test: Shift into the 3 position and fully depress the accelerator pedal and check the following points. Check up-shift operation. Check that the 1 --> 2 and 2 --> 3 up-shift take place and that the shift point conforms to the automatic shift schedule. Refer to «SERVICE DATA»(ref-388694-S42164406022011031100000) . HINT: There is no 4th up-shift in the 3 position. Check engine braking. While driving in the 3 position and 3rd gear, release the accelerator pedal and check the engine braking effect. Check for abnormal noise during acceleration and deceleration, and for shock at up-shift and down-shift. 2 position test: Shift into the 2 position and fully depress the accelerator pedal and check the following points. Check up-shift operation. Check that the 1 --> 2 up-shift takes place and that the shift point conforms to the automatic shift schedule. Refer to «SERVICE DATA»(ref-388694-S42164406022011031100000) . HINT: There is no 3rd up-shift and lock-up in the 2 position. Check engine braking. While driving in the 2 position and 2nd gear, release the accelerator pedal and check the engine braking effect. Check for abnormal noise during acceleration and deceleration, and for shock at up-shift and down-shift. L position test: Shift into the L position and fully depress the accelerator pedal and check the following points. Check no up-shift. While running in the L position, check that there is no up-shift to 2nd gear. HINT: There is no lock-up in the L position. Check engine braking. While driving in the L position, release the accelerator pedal and check the engine braking effect. Check for abnormal noise during acceleration and deceleration. R position test: Shift into the R position, lightly depress the accelerator pedal, and check that the vehicle moves backward without any abnormal noise or vibration. WARNING: Before conducting this test ensure that the test area is free from people and obstructions. P position test: Stop the vehicle on a grade (more than 5°) and after shifting into the P position, release the parking brake. Then, check that the parking lock pawl holds the vehicle in place.

- DESCRIPTION When troubleshooting On-Board Diagnostic (OBD II) vehicles, the vehicle must be connected to the OBD II scan tool (complying with SAE J1987). Various data output from the vehicle's ECM can then be read. OBD II regulations require that the vehicle's on-board computer illuminates the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel when the computer detects a malfunction in: The emission control system/components The powertrain control components (which affect vehicle emissions) The computer In addition, the applicable Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) prescribed by SAE J2012 are recorded in the ECM memory. When the malfunction does not reoccur, the MIL stays illuminated until the ignition switch is turned OFF, and the MIL turns OFF when the engine is started. However, the DTCs remain recorded in the ECM memory. To check DTCs, connect a Techstream to the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. The Techstream displays DTCs, the freeze frame data and a variety of the engine data. The DTCs and freeze frame data can be erased with the Techstream. Refer to «DTC CHECK / CLEAR»(ref-388736-S09090221702011031100000) .
- NORMAL MODE AND CHECK MODE The diagnosis system operates in "normal mode" during normal vehicle use. In normal mode, "2 trip detection logic" is used to ensure accurate detection of malfunctions. "Check mode" is also available to technicians as an option. In check mode, "1 trip detection logic" is used for simulating malfunction symptoms and increasing the system's ability to detect malfunctions, including intermittent malfunctions.
- 2 TRIP DETECTION LOGIC When a malfunction is first detected, the malfunction is temporarily stored in the ECM memory (1st trip). If the same malfunction is detected during the next drive cycle, the MIL is illuminated (2nd trip).
- FREEZE FRAME DATA Freeze frame data records the engine conditions (fuel system, calculated load, engine coolant temperature, fuel trim, engine speed, vehicle speed, etc.) when a malfunction is detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was running or stopped, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred. The ECM records engine conditions in the form of freeze frame data every 0.5 seconds. Using a Techstream, five separate sets of freeze frame data, including the data values at the time when the DTC was set, can be checked. 3 data sets before the DTC was set 1 data set when the DTC was set 1 data set after the DTC was set These data sets can be used to simulate the condition of the vehicle around the time the occurrence of the malfunction. The data may assist in identifying of the cause of the malfunction, and in judging whether it was temporary or not.
- BATTERY VOLTAGE Standard voltage 11 to 14 V If voltage is below 11 V, replace or recharge the battery before proceeding.
- DATA LINK CONNECTOR 3 (DLC3) Check the DLC3. Refer to «GENERAL INFORMATION»(ref-388639-S38434450612011031100000) .
- CHECK MIL Check that the MIL illuminates when turning the ignition switch to ON. If the MIL does not illuminate, there is a problem in the MIL circuit. Refer to «MIL Circuit»(ref-388739-S37981725752011031100000) . When the engine is started, the MIL should turn off.
DTC CHECK / CLEAR
Note. When the diagnosis system is changed from normal mode to check mode or vice versa, all DTCs and freeze frame data recorded in normal mode are cleared. Before changing modes, always check and make a note of DTCs and freeze frame data.
HINT
- DTCs which are stored in the ECM can be displayed on the Techstream. The Techstream can display the current, pending and permanent DTCs.
- If a malfunction is detected during the current driving cycle, current and permanent DTCs are stored.
- Some DTCs are not stored if the ECM does not detect the same malfunction again during a second consecutive driving cycle. However, such malfunctions, detected on only one occasion, are stored as pending DTCs.
- Current and pending DTCs can be cleared by using the Techstream or by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal. However, permanent DTCs cannot be cleared using either of these two methods.
- After clearing current DTCs using the Techstream (or by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal), permanent DTCs are cleared when the system is determined to be normal for the relevant DTCs and then the universal trip is performed.
| Pending DTC | Store condition | Malfunction detected |
|---|---|---|
| Clear condition | System determined to be normal. or DTCs cleared using Techstream. or Cable disconnected from negative battery terminal. | |
| Current DTC | Store condition | Malfunction detected (2nd trip). |
| Clear condition | No malfunctions in 40 driving cycles. or DTCs cleared using Techstream. or Cable disconnected from negative battery terminal. | |
| Permanent DTC | Store condition | Malfunction detected (2nd trip). |
| Clear condition | Ignition switch turned to ON after no malfunction is detected in 3 consecutive driving cycles. or After DTCs cleared using Techstream or cable disconnected from negative battery terminal, malfunction not detected when universal trip performed. | |
| MIL | ON | Malfunction detected (2nd trip). |
| OFF | Ignition switch turned to ON after no malfunction is detected in 3 consecutive driving cycles. or DTCs cleared using Techstream. or Cable disconnected from negative battery terminal. |

Before check mode, make notes of the DTCs and freeze frame data. Start the engine. The MIL should turn off after the engine starts. Perform "MONITOR DRIVE PATTERN" for the ECT test. Refer to «MONITOR DRIVE PATTERN»(ref-388736-S18364114502011031100000) . (Or, simulate the conditions of the malfunction described by the customer). After simulating the malfunction conditions, use the Techstream diagnosis selector to check the DTC and freeze frame data.
DATA LIST / ACTIVE TEST
- DATA LIST HINT: Using a Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Warm up the engine. Turn the ignition switch off. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the ignition switch to ON. Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List. According to the display on the Techstream, read the Data List.
