HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING [12/2013 - ]

HINT

  1. Use the following procedure to troubleshoot the smart key system (for start function).

  2. CUSTOMER PROBLEM ANALYSIS CHECK HINT: In troubleshooting, confirm that the problem symptoms have been accurately identified. Preconceptions should be discarded in order to make an accurate judgment. To clearly understand what the problem symptoms are, it is extremely important to ask the customer about the problem and the conditions at the time the malfunction occurred. Gather as much information as possible for reference. Past problems that seem unrelated may also help in some cases. The following 5 items are important points for problem analysis: What Vehicle model, system name When Date, time, occurrence frequency Where Road conditions Under what conditions? Running conditions, driving conditions, weather conditions How did it happen? Problem symptoms* *: Be sure to ask the customer in detail about the following points concerning the vehicle operating conditions, environment and problem, and then check for DTCs. If the entry lock/unlock function does not operate for all doors. If the entry lock function does not operate. If the entry unlock function does not operate. If both the entry lock and unlock functions do not operate. If the wireless lock and unlock functions do not operate. If there is no power even when the engine switch is pressed [does not turn on (ACC)]. If the engine does not start with the entry ignition function. If the outside warning buzzers do not sound. If the customer attempted to start the engine by touching the electrical key to the engine switch and pressing the engine switch. If the interior warning buzzers do not sound. If the steering does not unlock. Any other details concerning the problem. If it is thought that wave interference is likely, be sure to ask the customer in detail about the following points concerning the vehicle operating conditions, environment and problem. Specific locations where the system does not operate (such as near TV towers, large video displays, wireless garage door opener systems, wireless security cameras, home security systems, etc.). Specific times when the system does not operate: Whether or not symptoms occurred immediately after purchase or only recently. Whether or not the symptoms occurred even when the key was near the vehicle (electrical key antenna). If the system does not operate only when near specific vehicles (there may be an effect from electric waves from the wireless systems of other vehicles). If the system operates intermittently. If the key is bundled together with other items. If the key is carried together with other electronic devices, such as cell phones, personal computers, portable music players, other electrical keys, etc. (keep the key at least 0.1 m (0.33 ft.) away from such items). Where the key is being kept when not in use: Whether or not the key being placed within 1 m (3.28 ft.) of items such as TVs, DVD recorders, induction cookers, rice cookers, dishwashers, modems, cell phones, personal computers, microwave ovens, desk or floor lamps, cordless telephones, etc. If there are electronic devices that transmit electric waves placed in the vehicle. When the key battery was last replaced (when the battery is low): The key battery can be checked using the "Key Low Battery" item in the Data List. If the customer installed any optional components (theft deterrent devices, wireless fog lights, etc.) to the vehicle. NEXT: Go to next step
  3. INSPECT BASIC OPERATION Inspect battery voltage. Standard voltage 11 to 14 V NOTE: If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery before proceeding. Check for blown fuses, open or shorted wire harnesses, improperly connected connectors and other problems in areas that can be visually inspected. NEXT: Go to next step
  4. INSPECT COMMUNICATION FUNCTION OF CAN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM* Use the Techstream to check if the CAN communication system is functioning normally.   5. CHECK COMMUNICATION FUNCTION OF LIN COMMUNICATION SYSTEM* Use the Techstream to check if the LIN communication system is functioning normally.   1. OPERATION DESCRIPTION Entry ignition function (for Automatic Transmission): When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in the detection area inside the vehicle and the brake pedal is depressed, the engine is started by pressing the engine switch. When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in the detection area inside the vehicle and the brake pedal is not depressed, the power source mode is changed by pressing the engine switch. The power source mode changes in the following order every time the engine switch is pressed: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly when the engine switch is off, if the engine switch is pressed while not depressing the brake pedal, the power source mode changes to ACC and the entry key indicator light in the combination meter assembly blinks green. After getting into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly when the engine switch is off, if the brake pedal is depressed while the shift lever is in P or N*, the entry key indicator light in the combination meter assembly illuminates green. *: Only when the steering wheel is unlocked. The engine starts if the engine switch is pressed when the entry key indicator light in the combination meter assembly illuminates green. Changing the power source mode when the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly does not operate correctly due to wave interference or electrical key transmitter sub-assembly battery depletion (for Automatic Transmission): Unlock the door using the built-in mechanical key and get into the vehicle while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly. While depressing the brake pedal, hold the ornament side of the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly against the engine switch. When a buzzer sound is heard from the buzzer, release the brake pedal within 10 seconds. By pressing the engine switch while not depressing the brake pedal, the power source mode changes in the following order every time the engine switch is pressed: off --> on (IG) --> off.   2. CHECK ENTRY IGNITION FUNCTION Check the entry ignition function (for Automatic Transmission). With the engine switch off, move the shift lever to P, depress the brake pedal while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly and check that the entry key indicator light in the combination meter assembly illuminates green. Then, with the entry key indicator light in the combination meter assembly illuminates green, press the engine switch and check that the engine starts. With the brake pedal released and the engine switch off, press the engine switch while carrying the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly and check that the power source mode changes as follows: off --> on (ACC) --> on (IG) --> off. However, if the shift lever is in any position other than P while the engine switch is on (IG), the power source mode will not change to off, but to on (ACC). Stop the vehicle, press the engine switch and check that the power source mode changes to off (the engine stops and all electrical systems are off). However, if the shift lever is in any position other than P, even if the engine switch is pressed while the vehicle is stationary, the power source mode will not change to off, but to on (ACC). Move the shift lever to P, open the door and check that the steering lock operates. Inspect the entry ignition operating range (front floor). Place the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly on the front seat at either inspection point so that it is facing in the direction shown in the illustration and check that the engine can be started. The key is verified* or the Engine immobiliser unset (engine switch on (ACC) or on (IG)) The shift lever is in N (steering lock is unlocked). The stop light switch is on. Condition 2 All conditions are met: The power source mode has not changed from on (IG) to on (ACC). The stop light switch is on. for Manual Transmission The engine can be started by pressing the engine switch when the following conditions are met. Condition All conditions are met: The key is verified* or the engine switch is on (ACC) or on (IG). The clutch start switch is on. *: When the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in the vehicle, the ID code sent as a result from communication between the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly and certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) and the ID code calculated by the certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) are compared. If the ID codes match each other, the vehicle recognizes that the electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is in the vehicle. Indicator Condition Chart Indicator Vehicle State Off Either condition is met: The engine is running. The engine switch is off and the vehicle is in a state in which the engine does not start if the engine switch is pressed. Illuminated in green All conditions below are met and the vehicle is in a state in which the engine can be started if the engine switch is pressed: The electrical key transmitter sub-assembly is inside the vehicle, the stop light switch assembly*1 or clutch start switch assembly*2 is on and the shift lever is in P*1. Blinking in green (blinking slowly) The engine switch is on (ACC) or on (IG), and the vehicle is in a state in which the engine does not start if the engine switch is pressed. Blinking in green (blinking rapidly) When the power is being turned on or the engine is being started, the steering fails to unlock (steering lock is stuck). The indicator starts blinking when the steering fails to unlock. The indicator stops blinking when 30 seconds elapse after blinking starts, or when the power is being turned on or the engine is being started again. Blinking in orange The steering lock ECU has an internal malfunction. The indicator starts blinking when the steering lock ECU or certification ECU (smart key ECU assembly) is determined to have an internal malfunction. The indicator stops blinking when the ECU returns to normal or 15 seconds elapse after blinking starts. *1: for Automatic Transmission *2: for Manual Transmission HINT: The engine can be started up with the shift lever in N only when the steering wheel is unlocked. SMART KEY SYSTEM

DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM [12/2013 - ]

  1. DESCRIPTION Smart key system (for start function) data and the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) can be read through the Data Link Connector 3 (DLC3) of the vehicle. When the system seems to be malfunctioning, use the Techstream to check for malfunctions and perform repairs.

  3. INSPECT BATTERY VOLTAGE If the voltage is below 11 V, recharge or replace the battery before proceeding. Standard voltage 11 to 14 V

DTC CHECK / CLEAR [12/2013 - ]

Note. When using the Techstream with the vehicle engine switch off, connect the Techstream to the vehicle and turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less until communication between the Techstream and the vehicle begins. Then select the vehicle type under manual mode and enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Smart Key. While using the Techstream, periodically turn a courtesy light switch on and off at intervals of 1.5 seconds or less to maintain communication between the Techstream and the vehicle.

  1. CHECK DTC (POWER SOURCE CONTROL) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Body Electrical / Power Source Control / Trouble Codes. Check for DTCs. HINT: Refer to the Techstream operator's manual for further details.

  1. DATA LIST HINT: Using the Techstream to read the Data List allows the values or states of switches, sensors, actuators and other items to be read without removing any parts. This non-intrusive inspection can be very useful because intermittent conditions or signals may be discovered before parts or wiring is disturbed. Reading the Data List information early in troubleshooting is one way to save diagnostic time. NOTE: In the table below, the values listed under "Normal Condition" are reference values. Do not depend solely on these reference values when deciding whether a part is faulty or not. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on.
