Service Programming System (SPS)

For step by step programming instructions, please refer to the techline information system (TIS) terminal.

Review the information below to ensure proper programming protocol.

IMPORTANTDO NOT program a control module unless you are directed by a service procedure or you are directed by a General Motors Corporation service bulletin. Programming a control module at any other time will not permanently correct a customer's concern. It is essential that the Tech 2 and the TIS terminal are both equipped with the latest software before performing service programming system (SPS). Some modules will require additional programming/setup events performed before or after programming. Some vehicles may require the use of a CANDi module for programming. Review the appropriate service information for these procedures. DTCs may set during programming. Clear DTCs after programming is complete. Clearing powertrain DTCs will set the Inspection/Maintenance (I/M) system status indicators to NO.

Ensure the following conditions are met before programming a control module

  1. Vehicle system voltage There is not a charging system concern. All charging system concerns must be repaired before programming a control module. Battery voltage is greater than 12 volts but less than 16 volts. The battery must be charged before programming the control module if the battery voltage is low. A battery charger is NOT connected to the vehicle's battery. Incorrect system voltage or voltage fluctuations from a battery charger, may cause programming failure or control module damage. Turn OFF or disable any system that may put a load on the vehicle's battery, such as the following components: Twilight sentinel Interior lights Daytime running lights (DRL)-Applying the parking brake, on most vehicles, disables the DRL system. Refer to the Owner's manual. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems Engine cooling fans, radio, etc.
  2. The ignition switch must be in the proper position. The Tech 2 prompts you to turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. DO NOT change the position of the ignition switch during the programming procedure, unless instructed to do so.
  3. Make certain all tool connections are secure, including the following components and circuits: The RS-232 communication cable port The connection at the data link connector (DLC) The voltage supply circuits
  4. DO NOT disturb the tool harnesses while programming. If an interruption occurs during the programming procedure, programming failure or control module damage may occur.
  5. DO NOT turn OFF the ignition if the programming procedure is interrupted or unsuccessful. Ensure that all control module and DLC connections are secure and the TIS terminal operating software is up to date. Attempt to reprogram the control module. If the control module cannot be programmed, replace the control module.

There is no setup procedure for this module.

Programming the BCM

IMPORTANTAfter the procedure is completed, the personalization settings of the BCM are set to a default setting. Inform the customer that the personalization must be set again.

Perform the special function for BCM "Request BCM Info. for SPS" or select Service Programming Systems, and then refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Relearn Restraints ID

Perform the special function for BCM "Setup SDM Serial Number in BCM" with the scan tool.

This procedure may also need to be performed when replacing the SDM.

IMPORTANTAfter programming, perform the following to avoid future misdiagnosis
  1. Turn the ignition OFF for 10 seconds.
  2. Connect the scan tool to the data link connector.
  3. Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
  4. Use the scan tool in order to retrieve history DTCs from all modules.
  5. Clear all history DTCs.

Each of the following service procedures require programming or setup procedures to be performed on the communication interface module.

EBCM Reprogramming

If the EBCM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

ECM Reprogramming

  1. If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-268114-S34948545622007101800000) .
  2. Engine Oil Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.
  3. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining-When available, use a scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

HVAC Control Module Reprogramming

Do not reprogram the HVAC control module, unless directed by a service procedure, or a service bulletin.

Reprogram HVAC Control Module-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Auxiliary HVAC Control Module Reprogramming

Do not reprogram the auxiliary HVAC control module, unless directed by a service procedure, or a service bulletin.

Reprogram HVAC Control Module-Refer to Service Programming System (SPS) .

Passenger Presence System (PPS) Rezeroing Procedure

Important

  1. Before rezeroing the passenger presence system (PPS), the front passenger seat must be completely empty of all items. The presence of any items on the front passenger seat will affect the calibration and operation of the PPS.
  2. When rezeroing the PPS, the instrument panel cluster (IPC) and dash lights will begin dimming on and off. This is normal operation during the rezeroing procedure and does not indicate additional system faults.
  1. Empty the front outboard passenger seat.
  2. Verify that all supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) and PPS components, connectors and connector position assurances (CPAs) are properly connected and mounted.
  3. Install a scan tool.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. IMPORTANT: All SIR and PPS DTCs must be cleared before rezeroing the PPS. The presence of current or history DTCs will prevent the PPS from rezeroing and may set additional DTCs.
  5. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and PPS DTCs.
  6. With a scan tool, request the PPS rezeroing procedure.
  7. Initiate the PPS rezeroing procedure. The PPS will illuminate both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators located on the rearview mirror until the rezeroing procedure has been completed. When the rezeroing procedure has been successfully completed, the PPS will display the current system status at the rearview mirror indicator. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful both PASSENGER AIR BAG ON and OFF indicators, located on the rearview mirror, will alternate from no illumination to full illumination in 1-second intervals, for 5 seconds. The PPS will treat an unsuccessful rezero attempt as a system fault.
  8. If the rezeroing procedure was unsuccessful, repeat this procedure. Due to the communication status between the SDM and the PPS module, this procedure may have to be repeated until a successful rezero attempt has been achieved.
  9. After the PPS has been successfully rezeroed, perform the «Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle»(ref-268112-S10851617502007101800000) .

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

PCM Reprogramming

IMPORTANTEnsure that the CKP variation learn procedure is performed after reprogramming.
  1. If the powertrain control module (PCM) requires programming, the following procedures must be performed: The PCM reprogramming-Refer to «Service Programming System (SPS)»(ref-268114-S34948545622007101800000) . The CKP variation learn-Refer to «Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn»(ref-268121-S42850641212007101800000) .

With RPO UM8

If the navigation radio is replaced and a theft locked condition exists, the following procedure must be performed

Perform the Radio Setup .

After replacing the sunroof actuator motor assembly, the calibration procedure must be performed. Refer to Sunroof Motor/Actuator Initialization/Teach Process .

IMPORTANTWhen replacing a theft deterrent control module with a GM Service Parts Operation (SPO) replacement part, set up the control module prior to the 10-minute relearn procedure or the 30-minute relearn procedure.

Set Up a New Theft Deterrent Control Module

Use this procedure only if replacing the theft deterrent control module with an GM SPO Replacement Part.

  3. With a scan tool, select Module Setup under Theft Deterrent Module.
  4. Follow the scan tool on-screen instructions.
IMPORTANTWhen replacing a theft deterrent control module with an GM SPO Replacement Part, the module will learn the keys immediately. The existing powertrain control module (PCM) must learn the new fuel continue password when you replace the theft deterrent control module. When replacing a PCM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, the new PCM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately after programming and upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received and a password is learned, perform the learn procedure to change this password again. A PCM which had been installed in another vehicle will have learned the fuel continue password of the other vehicle's theft deterrent control module. Perform either the 10-minute relearn procedure or the 30-minute relearn procedure after programming to learn the fuel continue password of the current vehicle's theft deterrent control modules. When performing either relearn procedure, all previously learned keys will be erased from the theft deterrent control module's memory. Additional keys may be learned immediately after the first relearn procedure by inserting the additional key and turning the ignition to RUN within 10 seconds of removing the previously learned key. Use only a master key when performing the first relearn procedure. If you use a valet key first, the theft deterrent control module will not allow additional keys to be learned.

10-Minute Relearn Procedure

Use this procedure after replacing the following components

  1. The passkey III (PK3) keys
  2. The theft deterrent control module
  3. The PCM, see Important above
