BLEEDING PROCEDURE

Note. ALWAYS use DOT 4 brake fluid. DO NOT use DOT 5 silicone brake fluid.

  1. Remove brake fluid reservoir cap. Fill brake fluid reservoir. Place one end of a hose in fluid reservoir and other end in a bottle filled with brake fluid. Raise and support vehicle.
  2. Connect brake bleeder hose to left front wheel and open nipple. Drain off about .10 qt. (.1L) brake fluid. Tighten nipple and replace rubber plug. Transfer brake hose to right rear wheel and open nipple. Drain off about .05 qt. (.05L) brake fluid. Repeat procedure for remaining wheels, draining off about .10 qt. (.1L) brake fluid for right front wheel and about .05 qt. (.05L) fluid for left rear wheel. See «BRAKE LINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE»(ref-5238-S01961151052000081000000) table.

BRAKE LINE BLEEDING SEQUENCE

PARKING BRAKE

Note. If installing new cable(s), apply parking brake several times to stretch cable(s).

All Models

  1. Release parking brake lever. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheels. Check if cable actuates lever. If cable actuates lever, press cable holder out of bracket. Loosen adjusting unit until brake disc is locked. Tighten adjusting unit back 7 notches. Adjust other wheel in same manner. NOTE: Ensure brake shoes are backed-off by a sufficient amount to avoid noise.
  2. Install rear wheels. Apply parking brake 6 notches. Ensure both rear wheels are locked. If necessary, adjust cable equalizer by setting parking brake lever at notch No. 2. Tighten adjusting nut on link rod until brakes begin to operate. Lower vehicle slightly. Release parking brake lever and tighten again. At notch 3-6, wheels should lock.

Note. Resurface or replace rotors each time new brake pads are installed.

FRONT BRAKE ROTOR

Note. Before removing wheels, check for excessive wheel bearing runout at outer edge of rim. Before removing rotor, check for excessive lateral runout. See DISC BRAKE SPECIFICATIONS .

ABS/HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT

Note. For ABS/hydraulic control unit removal and installation, see ANTI-LOCK - ABS 5.3 & 5.4 article.

REAR AXLE HUB BEARINGS

Note. Rear axle hub bearings are not serviceable. If worn, replace rear axle hub as an assembly.
