  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove any necessary skid plates. Refer to «PLATE, Skid, Front , Removal»(ref-457829-S37099224772012030200000) and «PLATE, Skid, Transfer Case , Removal»(ref-457829-S06628527422012030200000) .
  4. Mark propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
  5. Remove the rear propeller shaft.
  6. Remove the front propeller shaft, if necessary.
  7. Remove the engine to transmission inspection cover.
  8. Remove the exhaust support bracket from the rear of the transmission.
  9. Remove the exhaust particulate filter. 1 - OPENING 3 - TORQUE CONVERTER 2 - DRIVE PLATE 4 - TORQUE CONVERTER BOLT
  10. Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until torque converter bolts (4) are accessible. Then remove the 6 bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt. CAUTION: Tag the orientation of all electrical connectors. Some electrical connectors may be interchangeable, damage to the electrical system may occur if the connectors are reversed. 1 - INPUT SPEED SENSOR 2 - OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR
  11. Disconnect the input speed sensor (1), output speed sensor (2), electrical connectors and position the harness aside.
  12. Disconnect the transmission valve body solenoid and pressure switch electrical connectors and position harness aside.
  13. Disconnect the cooler line temperature sensor electrical connector and position harness aside. 1 - SHIFT CABLE BRACKET 4 - MANUAL SHIFT LEVER 2 - SHIFT CABLE 5 - SHIFT CABLE BRACKET BOLT 3 - SHIFT CABLE BALL SOCKET
  14. Disconnect gearshift cable ball socket (3) from transmission manual valve lever (4).
  15. Remove the shift cable (2) from the shift cable bracket (1).
  16. Remove the shift cable bracket bolt (5) and shift cable bracket (1). 1 - BOLT
  17. Remove the bolt (1) securing the differential pressure sensor to the transmission case, if equipped. 1 - ENGINE 2 - TRANSMISSION
  18. Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
  19. Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack. NOTE: Support the transmission where the transmission oil pan meets the transmission case.
  20. Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
  21. Remove bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and crossmember.
  22. Remove transfer case, if necessary. Refer to appropriate Transfer Case Removal Information. .
  23. Remove the nuts (1) securing the power bending bracket to extension housing, if equipped. 1 - TEMPERATURE SENSOR 2 - JIFFY TITE FITTINGS 3 - COOLER LINE FITTINGS
  24. Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines at transmission Jiffy Tite fittings (2) with quick connect tool (special tool #9546, Disconnect Tool).
  25. Remove all remaining converter housing bolts.
  26. Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
  27. Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
  28. Lower transmission (2) and remove assembly from under the vehicle. CAUTION: Verify that transmission is secure on the lifting device or work surface, the center of gravity of the transmission will shift when the torque converter is removed creating an unstable condition. The torque converter is a heavy unit. Use caution when separating the torque converter from the transmission.
  29. To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.

Torque Converter Solenoid

In order to reduce heat build-up in the transmission, the TCM can turn on or off the Torque Converter Solenoid as needed. This function can occur at various times depending on the following variables

  1. Shift lever position
  2. Current gear range
  3. Transmission fluid temperature
  4. Input speed
  5. Throttle angle
  6. Engine speed

TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC)

In a standard torque converter, the impeller and turbine are rotating at about the same speed and the stator is freewheeling, providing no torque multiplication. By applying the lockup clutch, the turbine and impeller rotate together removing any slip. The result of this engagement is a direct 1:1 mechanical link between the engine and the transmission.

The clutch can be engaged in second, third, fourth, fifth and, sixth gear ranges.
