- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Raise and support the vehicle
- Remove any necessary skid plates (2). 1 - INPUT SPEED SENSOR 2 - OUTPUT SPEED SENSOR 3 - SHIFT MOTOR AND MODE SENSOR ASSEMBLY 4 - VARIABLE LINE PRESSURE CONNECTOR 5 - TRANSMISSION RANGE SENSOR
- Mark propeller shaft and axle companion flanges for assembly alignment.
- Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to «SHAFT, Drive, Rear Light Duty , Removal.»(ref-457778-S35273603822012030200000)
- Remove the front propeller shaft, if necessary. Refer to «SHAFT, Drive, Front Light Duty , Removal»(ref-457778-S29911207512012030200000) .
- Disconnect the input (1) and output (2) speed sensors.
- Disconnect the transfer case shift motor and mode sensor assembly (3).
- Disconnect the variable line pressure connector (4) from the transmission, if equipped.
- Disconnect the transmission range sensor (5). 1 - SOLENOID/PRESSURE SWITCH ASSEMBLY CONNECTOR
- Disconnect wires (1) from the solenoid/pressure switch assembly.
- Disconnect the connectors for the oxygen sensors.
- Remove the bolts (2) holding the exhaust crossover pipe to the pipe flanges.
- Loosen the clamp (4) that holds the crossover pipe to the exhaust pipe (5).
- Remove crossover pipe (6). 1 - GEARSHIFT CABLE 2 - CABLE SUPPORT BRACKET 3 - MANUAL VALVE LEVER
- Disconnect gearshift cable (1) from transmission manual valve lever (3).
- Disengage the shift cable (1) from the cable support bracket (2). 1 - CROSSMEMBER 2 - REAR TRANSMISSION MOUNT
- Remove the starter motor.
- Remove the engine to transmission collar.
- Rotate crankshaft in clockwise direction until converter bolts are accessible. Then remove bolts one at a time. Rotate crankshaft with socket wrench on dampener bolt.
- Disconnect the transmission vent hose from the transmission.
- Support rear of engine with safety stand or jack.
- Raise transmission slightly with service jack to relieve load on crossmember and supports.
- Remove bolts securing rear support and cushion to transmission and crossmember (1).
- Remove bolts attaching crossmember to frame and remove crossmember. 1 - TRANSMISSION COOLER LINES 2 - CLIPS 3 - COOLER LINE FITTINGS
- Disconnect transmission fluid cooler lines (1) at transmission fittings (3) and clips (2). NOTE: When disconnecting the transmission oil cooler lines, it is necessary to replace the line clip that is located on the oil pan stud. The retention force of the clip is severely degraded upon removal.
- Remove all remaining converter housing bolts.
- Carefully work transmission and torque converter assembly rearward off engine block dowels.
- Hold torque converter in place during transmission removal.
- Lower transmission and remove assembly from under the vehicle.
- To remove torque converter, carefully slide torque converter out of the transmission.
TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH (TCC)
In a standard torque converter, the impeller and turbine are rotating at about the same speed and the stator is freewheeling, providing no torque multiplication. By applying the turbine's piston and friction material to the front cover, a total converter engagement can be obtained. The result of this engagement is a direct 1:1 mechanical link between the engine and the transmission.
The clutch can be engaged in second, third, fourth, and fifth (if applicable) gear ranges depending on overdrive control switch position. If the overdrive control switch is in the normal ON position, the clutch will engage after the shift to fourth gear. If the control switch is in the OFF position, the clutch will engage after the shift to third gear.
The TCM controls the torque converter clutch via the L/R-CC Solenoid. There are four TCC operational modes
- No EMCC
- Partial EMCC
- Full EMCC
- Gradual-to-no EMCC
