Important: After removing and installing front axle body, steering wheel, steering column assembly or steering intermediate shaft, always check the straight-ahead position of the steering. The prerequisite for this is a correct toe-in adjustment. Ensure that in the straight-ahead position of the steering, the wound spring of the steering column electronics module is in the centre position. If necessary, adjust – see operation "Steering Column Electronics Module (CIM Module), Remove and Install" . In addition, for vehicles with ESP: Check zero position of steering angle sensor
Note. The steering can be locked in the straight-ahead position with the steering lock. This is accomplished if the front wheels and the steering wheel are in the straight-ahead position.
Note. The steering intermediate shaft can only be attached in each case in one position at the steering shaft or at the steering pinion shaft of the steering gear. It must be ensured while doing this that steering shaft and steering pinion shaft have not been twisted by 360° with respect to one another.
Inspect
- 1. Check latching of steering in straight-ahead position • Move steering into straight-ahead position • Pull out ignition key. • Allow steering lock to latch in – Turn steering wheel slightly to the left and right until steering lock latches
Important. The steering wheel and the wheels on the front axle must be in the straight-ahead position when steering lock engages!
Adjust
- 2. with deviations: attach steering wheel in accordance with mark • see operation "Steering Wheel, Remove and Install"
Note. The mark on the steering shaft and the steering wheel hub must coincide (arrows). Marks face downwards.
- 3. Lock steering wheel in straight ahead position • with steering lock
Note. Any deviations still existing in the straight-ahead position indicate an incorrectly adjusted toe-in.
