Transaxle & Transmission
- Check fluid with engine and transmission at normal operating temperature. With vehicle standing level and at idle, shift transmission/transaxle through all positions and return to Park.
- Clean area around dipstick. Remove dipstick, wipe clean, insert and withdraw. Level should be between "H" and "L" marks. If level is not as indicated, add fluid as necessary.
- Dipstick on some models may be marked with HOT and COLD ranges. Use COLD range if fluid is 86-122°F (30-50°C) and vehicle was not driven before checking level.
Note. Normal fluid should be clear with a Pink color and should not have a strong burnt odor.
Transfer Case
Oil level should be at bottom of fill hole.
Nissan Matic "D" or Dexron-III ATF.
Transfer Case (Frontier, Pathfinder, Pickup & QX4)

Transaxle/Transmission
- Remove drain plug, and allow fluid to drain. Install drain plug and tighten to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-91644-S26363981092001032600000) . Add fluid through fill tube.
- Warm transaxle to normal operating temperature. Shift transaxle through all gears. Return to Park. Check fluid level. Add fluid as necessary.
Remove drain plug, and allow fluid to drain. Reinstall drain plug. Tighten drain plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Add fluid through fill hole until fluid level is at bottom of fill hole.
Altima, Maxima, Quest, Sentra & 200SX
- Neutral safety switch operates back-up lights and prevents starting except in Park and Neutral. To adjust, place transaxle in Neutral. Disconnect shift cable from transaxle shift shaft lever.
- Loosen neutral safety switch bolts. Move switch until an alignment pin can be inserted through hole in transaxle shift shaft lever and hole in neutral safety switch body. See «NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ALIGNMENT PIN»(ref-91644-S29413521322001032600000) table. (Scheme 163) Tighten switch bolts.
- Check continuity through starter circuit of neutral safety switch. Continuity should exist only in Park and Neutral. Reconnect shift cable and adjust as necessary. See «SHIFT CONTROL CABLE»(ref-91644-S38493193112001032600000) under ADJUSTMENTS.

Frontier, Pathfinder, Pickup, QX4 & 240SX
- Neutral safety switch operates back-up lights and prevents starting except in Park and Neutral positions. To adjust, place shift lever in Neutral position. Ensure transaxle/transmission is in Neutral (transaxle/transmission shift shaft lever should be in vertical position). (Scheme 164)
- Loosen neutral safety switch bolts. Rotate switch until correct size alignment pin can be inserted through shift shaft lever and switch arm. See «NEUTRAL SAFETY SWITCH ALIGNMENT PIN»(ref-91644-S29413521322001032600000) table. Tighten neutral safety switch bolts and remove pin.
- Check continuity through starter circuit of neutral safety switch. Continuity should exist only in Neutral and Park positions.

SHIFT CONTROL CABLE
Note. Move shift lever through all gear positions. If each detent cannot be felt and shift lever pointer does not align with each position indicator, adjust gearshift linkage.
Altima & Quest (1997 Models)
Move shift lever to Park. Loosen lock nut holding shift cable housing to bracket on transaxle. (Scheme 165) Place manual shaft in Park. Pull shift cable from boot to remove slack. Push shift cable back into boot.039" (1.0 mm). Tighten shift cable lock nut to 97-132 INCH lbs. (11-15 N. m). Ensure shift lever moves smoothly and without sliding noise.
Altima & Quest (1998 Models)
Move shift lever to Park. Loosen lock nut holding shift cable housing to bracket on transaxle. (Scheme 165) Place manual shaft in Park. Turn wheels at least 1/4 rotation and apply park lock. Pull shift cable from boot to remove slack. Tighten shift cable lock nut to 97-132 INCH lbs. (11-15 N. m). Ensure shift lever moves smoothly and without sliding noise.

Pathfinder & QX4
- Place selector lever in Park. Remove center console. Loosen lock nuts. (Scheme 167) Ensure transmission is in Park position.
- While pulling selector lever toward Reverse (without pushing shift lever release button), tighten turnbuckle until slight cable tension is achieved. Back off turnbuckle one turn. Tighten lock nuts to 36-48 INCH lbs. (4-6 N.m). Ensure shift lever moves smoothly.
Pickup (1997) & 240SX
- Place shift lever in Park. Loosen lock nuts on rod. (Scheme 166) While pulling selector lever toward Reverse (without pushing shifter release button), tighten lock nut "X" until it touches trunnion.
- Back off lock nut "X" one turn. Tighten lock nut "Y" to 97-132 INCH lbs. (11-15 N.m). Recheck shift lever positions, ensuring shift lever moves smoothly.
