SHIFT LOCK SYSTEM
Start vehicle and depress brake pedal. Move shift lever to desired position. Shift lock solenoid will not be energized unless ASCD cancel/brake switch is operated by depressing brake pedal with ignition switch in ON position.
KEY LOCK SYSTEM
Insert key in ignition switch and turn to ACC or ON position. Shift lever can be moved once brake pedal is depressed. Move shift lever to Park position, then turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove key. Shift interlock cable prevents ignition switch from being turned to LOCK position unless shift lever is in Park position.
SELECTOR LEVER CANNOT BE MOVED FROM PARK POSITION WITH KEY IN AND WITH BRAKE PEDAL APPLIED OR, SELECTOR LEVER CAN BE MOVED FROM PARK POSITION WHEN KEY IS REMOVED FROM KEY CYLINDER
- Check power source. Access Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU). (Scheme 20) Ensure ignition is off. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Blue/Black wire). Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse No. 26 in junction block fuse block.
- Check ignition power source. Ensure ignition is off. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Red/Green wire). No voltage should be present. Turn ignition on. Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse No. 32 in junction block fuse block.
- Check ground circuit. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SLCU connector. Check continuity between terminal No. 6 on SLCU harness connector and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
- Check key switch input signal. Connect SLCU connector. Remove key from ignition switch. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 11 (Yellow/Red wire). No voltage should be present. Insert key into ignition switch. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, inspect key switch, open or short between key switch and SLCU. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Repair as necessary.
- Check detention switch input signal. Turn ignition on. Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Green/White wire). No voltage should be present. If voltage is not as specified, inspect detention switch. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000).
- With voltmeter connected (backprobing) to terminal No. 5 on SLCU harness connector, ensure ignition is in ON position and shift lever is in Park position. Depress brake pedal. Push shift lever release button. Battery voltage should be present. Move shift lever to any other position. Voltage should not change. If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness for open or short. Inspect detention switch. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Repair as necessary.
- Check brake switch signal. With ignition on, measure voltage (backprobing) between terminal No. 3 (Red Wire) on SLCU harness connector and ground. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short between SLCU and brake switch. If circuit is okay, inspect brake light switch.
- Check output signal. Turn ignition on. Access shift lock solenoid connector. (Scheme 21) Measure voltage (backprobing) between terminal No. 8 (Blue/Black Wire) on shift lock harness connector and ground. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. Turn ignition off. No voltage should be present. if voltage is not as specified, inspect and repair harness for open or short.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect shift lock solenoid harness connector. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 9 (Black wire) on harness connector. If continuity does not exist, inspect and repair ground circuit.
- Inspect shift lock system operation. If system is not functioning correctly, inspect shift lock solenoid. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Repair as necessary.

KEY CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM IGNITION SWITCH WITH SHIFT LEVER IN PARK POSITION OR KEY CAN BE REMOVED FROM IGNITION SWITCH WITH SHIFT LEVER IN ANY POSITION OTHER THAN PARK
- Check power source. Access Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU). (Scheme 20) Ensure ignition is off. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (Blue/Black wire). Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse No. 26 in junction block fuse block.
- Check ignition power source. Ensure ignition is off. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Red/Green wire). No voltage should be present. Turn ignition on. Battery voltage should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse No. 32 in junction block fuse block.
- Check ground circuit. Turn ignition off. Disconnect SLCU connector. Check continuity between terminal No. 6 on SLCU harness connector and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
- Check key switch input signal. Connect SLCU connector. Remove key from ignition switch. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 11 (Yellow/Red wire). No voltage should be present. Insert key into ignition switch. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, inspect key switch, open or short between key switch and SLCU. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Repair as necessary.
- Check detention switch key input signal. Turn ignition on. Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Using voltmeter, backprobe SLCU connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 12 (Green/Yellow wire). No voltage should be present. If voltage is not as specified, inspect detention switch. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000).
- With voltmeter connected (backprobing) to terminal No. 12 on SLCU harness connector, ensure ignition is in ON position and shift lever is in Park position. Depress brake pedal. Push shift lever release button. Battery voltage should be present. Move shift lever to any other position. Voltage should not change. If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness for open or short. Inspect detention switch. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Repair as necessary.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Turn ignition off. Access key lock solenoid. (Scheme 22) Measure voltage (backprobe) between ground and terminal No. 2 (Green/Red wire) on solenoid harness connector. Monitor voltage while turning ignition on. Voltmeter should display a pulse of battery voltage. If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness between key lock solenoid and SLCU for open or short. Repair as necessary. If harness is okay, replace SLCU.
- With voltmeter connected to key lock solenoid connector terminal No. 2, depress and hold brake pedal and shift lever button. Monitor voltage while turning ignition off. Voltmeter should display a pulse of battery voltage. If voltage is not as specified, replace SLCU. If voltage is as specified, inspect key lock solenoid. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Replace as necessary.

Altima & Pathfinder
- Ensure selector lever is not damaged. Check power source. With ignition on, measure voltage between ASCD cancel switch harness terminal No. 2 and ground. (Scheme 23) Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and ignition switch power source.
- Check ASCD cancel switch. With ignition on, measure voltage between shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness terminal No. 1 and ground. With brake pedal depressed, zero volts should be present. With brake pedal released, battery voltage should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short between shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness connector No. 6 and ASCD cancel switch harness connector No. 1. If circuit is okay, inspect ASCD cancel switch. See appropriate test in «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000).
- Check ground circuit. With ignition in OFF position. Disconnect shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness connector. Check continuity between shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness terminal No. 6 and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
- Check park position switch and shift lock solenoid. See appropriate tests in «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Reconnect shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness connector. With ignition on, recheck shift lock operation.

- Ensure selector lever is not damaged. Check power source. With ignition on, measure voltage between ASCD cancel switch harness terminal No. 1 and ground. (Scheme 23)or (Scheme 24). Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and ignition switch power source.
- Check ASCD cancel switch. With ignition on, measure voltage between shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness terminal No. 2 and ground. With brake pedal depressed, zero volts should be present. With brake pedal released, battery voltage should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short between shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness connector No. 2 and ASCD cancel switch harness connector No. 2. If circuit is okay, inspect ASCD cancel switch. See appropriate test in «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000).
- Check ground circuit. With ignition in OFF position. Disconnect shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness connector. Check continuity between shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness terminal No. 1 and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
- Check park position switch and shift lock solenoid. See appropriate tests in «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-457-S40805201252000030800000). Reconnect shift lock solenoid and park position switch harness connector. With ignition on, recheck shift lock operation.
1997 200SX (2.0L)
- Ensure selector lever is not damaged. Check power source. With ignition on, use voltmeter to backprobe Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU) harness connector. Measure voltage between terminal No. 6 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. (Scheme 25) Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and battery supply power source.
- Check ignition signal. With ignition off, measure voltage between SLCU harness connector terminal No. 1 (Green wire) and ground. No voltage should exist. Turn ignition to ON position. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and ignition switch power source.
- Check ground circuit. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect SLCU harness connector. Check continuity between terminal No. 7 (Black wire) and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Check park position switch. See «PARK POSITION SWITCH»(ref-457-S14302320502000030800000) in COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary.
- Connect SLCU harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 5 (Red/White wire) on SLCU harness connector. Depress brake pedal. No voltage should exist. Move shift selector to any other position with brake pedal depressed. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness for open or short. Repair as necessary.
- Check brake switch signal. With ignition on, measure voltage between SLCU harness connector terminal No. 8 (Red/Green Wire) and ground. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short between SLCU and brake switch. If circuit is okay, inspect brake light switch.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Using voltmeter, backprobe shift lock solenoid harness connector. (Scheme 23) Measure voltage between terminal No. 7 (Blue/Orange wire) and ground. Turn ignition on. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect shift lock solenoid harness connector. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 8 (Black Wire) on solenoid harness connector. Continuity should exist. Repair as necessary. If harness is okay, inspect shift lock solenoid. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-457-S05125340932000030800000) in COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary.

- Ensure selector lever is not damaged. Check power source. With ignition on, use voltmeter to backprobe Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU) harness connector. Measure voltage between terminal No. 2 (Red/Yellow wire) and ground. (Scheme 26) Battery voltage should be present. If no voltage is present, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and battery supply power source.
- Check ignition signal. With ignition off, measure voltage between SLCU harness connector terminal No. 1 (Blue wire) and ground. No voltage should exist. Turn ignition to ON position. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short. Inspect fuse and ignition switch power source.
- Check ground circuit. Turn ignition OFF. Disconnect SLCU harness connector. Check continuity between terminal No. 8 (Black wire) and ground. If no continuity exists, repair or replace harness or connector.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Check park position switch. See «PARK POSITION SWITCH»(ref-457-S14302320502000030800000) in COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary.
- Connect SLCU harness connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Green/Yellow wire) on SLCU harness connector. Depress brake pedal. No voltage should exist. Move shift selector to any other position with brake pedal depressed. Battery voltage should exist. If voltage is not as specified, inspect harness for open or short. Repair as necessary.
- Check brake switch signal. With ignition on, measure voltage between SLCU harness connector terminal No. 5 (Purple Wire) and ground. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short between SLCU and brake switch. If circuit is okay, inspect brake light switch.
- Ensure shift lever is in Park position. Using voltmeter, backprobe shift lock solenoid harness connector. (Scheme 23) Measure voltage between terminal No. 9 (White wire) and ground. Turn ignition on. With brake pedal depressed, battery voltage should be present. With brake pedal released, zero volts should be present. If voltage is not as specified, check harness for open or short.
- Turn ignition off. Disconnect shift lock solenoid harness connector. Check continuity between ground and terminal No. 10 (Black Wire) on solenoid harness connector. Continuity should exist. Repair as necessary. If harness is okay, inspect shift lock solenoid. See «SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID»(ref-457-S05125340932000030800000) in COMPONENT TESTS. Replace as necessary.

ASCD BRAKE SWITCH
Disconnect ASCD brake switch harness connector. Check continuity between switch terminals. With brake pedal released, continuity should exist. With brake pedal depressed, no continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, ensure switch is adjusted correctly. Replace as necessary.
DETENTION SWITCH
- Disconnect shift lock solenoid harness connector, located below shift lever housing. (Scheme 21) Check for continuity between terminals No. 5 and 6 on shift lock solenoid harness connector. Continuity should only exist with shift lever in Park position and shift lever button depressed or with shift lever in any position other than Park and shift lever button released.
- Check for continuity between terminals No. 5 and 7 on shift lock solenoid harness connector. Continuity should only exist with shift lever in Park position and shift lever button depressed or with shift lever in any position other than Park and shift lever button released.
KEY LOCK SOLENOID
Apply fused battery voltage between key lock solenoid terminals. With voltage applied, solenoid should operate. Replace solenoid as necessary.
KEY LOCK SWITCH
Disconnect key lock switch harness connector. (Scheme 22) Check continuity between switch terminals No. 3 and 4. With key inserted, continuity should exist. With key removed, no continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, ensure switch is adjusted correctly. Replace as necessary.
PARK POSITION SWITCH
Disconnect park position switch harness connector. Check continuity between switch terminals. With selector lever set in "P" position, continuity should exist. In any other condition, no continuity should exist.
SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT (Q45)
Using voltmeter, backprobe Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU) connector. Measure voltage between SLCU terminals. (Scheme 27)

SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID

KEY INTERLOCK CABLE
Note. Ensure key interlock cable is installed without sharp bends, twists or interference with adjacent parts. Ensure casing cap and bracket are secured firmly. If casing cap can be removed with a load of less than 8.8 lbs (39.2 N), replace key interlock cable. (Scheme 28)
