Automatic Transmission Removal & Installation: Overview Nissan Maxima A32

Automatic Trans ~301 words
  1. Remove battery and battery bracket. Remove air cleaner assembly. On 1.6L Sentra and 200SX models, disconnect throttle valve cable at engine. On Altima, Maxima and Quest, remove left side mounting bracket between transaxle and body. On all models, disconnect starter motor wiring. Remove starter. Disconnect electrical connectors, control cables, shift linkage and hoses as necessary for removal. Remove crankshaft sensor (if equipped).
  2. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transaxle fluid. Remove front axle shafts. See AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVE AXLES. On Sentra and 200SX, remove intake manifold support. On all models, remove crossmember. Remove dust cover. Index mark torque converter in reference to drive plate. Remove torque converter bolts. Support engine. On 1.6L Sentra and 200SX models, remove front and rear gussets.
  3. On Sentra and 200SX models, remove rear transaxle-to-engine bracket and rear transaxle mount. On all models, set transaxle jack under transaxle. Remove engine-to-transaxle bolts. Carefully lower transaxle.
  1. Before installing torque converter, measure drive plate runout with a dial indicator. On Sentra and 200SX, if runout exceeds.008" (.2 mm), replace drive plate. On all other models, if runout exceeds.006" (0.15 mm), replace drive plate. Install torque converter into transaxle, aligning index marks made during removal.
  2. Ensure torque converter is seated by measuring distance from drive plate mounting pad to engine mating surface of transaxle. If distance is not as specified, torque converter is not seated. See «DRIVE PLATE MOUNTING PAD DEPTH»(ref-49454-S37616990162001032600000) table.
  3. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Apply sealant to torque converter bolts before installing bolts. Rotate crankshaft several times to ensure torque converter moves freely without binding. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49454-S23981944712001032600000) . Connect and adjust throttle valve cable (when equipped). See THROTTLE VALVE CABLE under ADJUSTMENTS in «TRANSMISSION SERVICING - A/T»(ref-91644) article.
