Removal (240SX)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Remove drive shaft. Disconnect starter wiring. Remove starter. Remove crankshaft sensor.
- Remove heat shield from catalytic converter. exhaust support brackets attached to transmission. Disconnect exhaust pipe from rear of catalytic converter. Disconnect electrical connectors, control cables, shift linkage and hoses as necessary for removal.
- Remove gussets. Remove transmission fluid filler tube. Remove torque converter housing inspection plate. Mark torque converter in relation to drive plate for installation reference. Remove torque converter bolts.
- Support transmission with transmission jack. Remove rear mount and crossmember mounting bolts. Remove engine-to-transmission bolts. Carefully remove transmission.
Removal (Pathfinder & QX4)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Remove crankshaft sensor. Drain transmission fluid. Remove front and rear exhaust tubes. Disconnect electrical connectors, control cables, shift linkage and hoses as necessary for removal. Remove drive shaft. Remove second crossmember and front drive shaft (4WD). Remove starter and gussets.
- Mark drive plate in relation to torque converter for installation reference. Remove torque converter bolts. Support transmission (and transfer case on 4WD) with jack. Remove rear transmission mount. Remove engine-to-transmission bolts. On 2WD, remove transmission. On 4WD, remove transmission and transfer case as an assembly.
Removal (Frontier & Pickup)
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect throttle valve cable from engine. Raise and support vehicle. Remove crankshaft sensor. Drain transmission fluid. Disconnect electrical connectors, control cables, shift linkage and hoses as necessary for removal. Remove drive shaft. Remove starter.
- Mark drive plate in relation to torque converter for installation reference. Remove torque converter bolts. Support transmission with jack. Remove rear mounting bracket from transmission and body. Remove engine-to-transmission bolts. Move transmission away from engine. Secure torque converter from sliding out front of transmission. Tilt and lower transmission to remove.
Installation (All RWD Models)
- Before installing torque converter, measure drive plate runout with a dial indicator. See «ALLOWABLE DRIVE PLATE RUNOUT»(ref-49454-S19846091382001032600000) table. If runout exceeds limit, replace drive plate. Install torque converter into transmission, aligning index marks made during removal.
- Ensure torque converter is seated by measuring distance from drive plate mounting pad to engine mating surface of transmission. If distance is not as specified, torque converter is not seated. See «DRIVE PLATE MOUNTING PAD DEPTH»(ref-49454-S37616990162001032600000) table.
- To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Apply sealant to torque converter bolts before installing bolts. Rotate crankshaft several times to ensure torque converter moves freely without binding. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49454-S23981944712001032600000) .
