Shift Lock System
Start vehicle and depress brake pedal. Move selector lever to desired position. Shift lock solenoid is not energized unless ASCD brake switch is operated by depressing brake pedal with ignition switch in ON position. If shift lock system does not operate as described, check voltage at shift lock control unit. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS.
Key Lock System
Insert key in ignition switch and turn to ACC or ON position. Selector lever can be moved once brake pedal is depressed. Move selector lever to Park position, then turn ignition switch to LOCK position and remove key. Shift interlock cable prevents ignition switch from being turned to LOCK position unless selector lever is in Park position. If key lock system does not operate as described, check voltage at shift lock control unit. See SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT under PIN VOLTAGE TESTS.
COMPONENT TESTS
Note. For circuit reference, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION and/or WIRING DIAGRAMS . For component location, refer to appropriate illustration. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS .
ASCD BRAKE SWITCH
Disconnect ASCD brake switch harness connector. Check for continuity between switch terminals. With brake pedal released, continuity should exist. With brake pedal depressed, continuity should not exist. If continuity is not as specified, ensure switch is properly adjusted. Replace as necessary.
DETENTION SWITCH
Disconnect A/T device harness connector. Check for continuity between A/T device harness connector terminals No. 5 and 6. see scheme 9or see scheme 10. Continuity should not exist with gearshift lever in "P" position. With the gearshift lever in any position other than "P" continuity should exist.
KEY LOCK SOLENOID
Apply fused battery voltage between key lock solenoid terminals No. 1 and 2. see scheme 11 With voltage applied, solenoid should operate in one direction. Switch voltage supply leads to solenoid terminals. Solenoid should operate in opposite direction. Replace solenoid as necessary.
KEY SWITCH
Disconnect key switch harness connector. Check for continuity between key switch harness connector terminals No. 3 and 4. see scheme 12 With key inserted, continuity should exist. With key removed, continuity should not exist. Replace as necessary.
SHIFT LOCK SOLENOID
Apply fused battery voltage between shift lock solenoid terminals No. 9 and 10. see scheme 13or see scheme 14. With voltage applied, solenoid should operate. Replace solenoid as necessary.
STOPLIGHT SWITCH
Disconnect stoplight switch harness connector. Check for continuity between switch terminals. With brake pedal released, continuity should not exist. With brake pedal depressed, continuity should exist. If continuity is not as specified, ensure switch is properly adjusted. Replace as necessary.
SHIFT LOCK CONTROL UNIT
Using DVOM, backprobe Shift Lock Control Unit (SLCU) connector. Measure voltage between appropriate SLCU terminals under specified condition. (Scheme 83)or (Scheme 84).
