Transaxle Cooling

All vehicles with automatic transaxles are equipped with a transmission fluid cooler integrated to the A/C condenser, called a combo cooler, that cannot be serviced separately. The integrated transmission fluid cooler transfers heat from the transmission fluid to the outside air.

The transmission fluid cooling system consists of the following

  1. Fluid cooler pressure hose
  2. A/C condenser/transmission fluid combo cooler (serviced as an assembly)
  3. Fluid cooler return hose
  4. Fluid cooler return tube
  5. Optional cold weather cooler bypass valve (CBV)

CAUTIONWhenever the transaxle has been disassembled to install new parts, the transmission fluid cooler and the fluid cooler tubes should be flushed. Failure to clean the transmission fluid cooler or the cooler tubes will cause transaxle failure.

Note. Some vehicles are equipped with a cold weather cooler bypass valve (CBV). This valve cannot be flushed. Install a new CBV as part of an overhaul or installation of a remanufactured transaxle.

Note. Cleaning and backflushing the transmission fluid cooling system as outlined in this article will keep contamination from re-entering the transaxle and causing a repeat repair.

When internal wear or damage has occurred in the transaxle, metal particles or clutch plate material may have been carried into the torque converter and transmission fluid cooler. These contaminants are a major cause of recurring transaxle concerns and must be removed from the system before the transaxle is put back in use.
