REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
| CAUTION | When battery is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until computer systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery. |
Note. Removal and installation procedures for MPV are not provided by manufacturer.
Removal & Installation (Miata)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove front side trim. Disconnect key interlock solenoid connector. Remove key interlock solenoid. (Scheme 25) To install, reverse order of removal.

Removal (Millenia)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove instrument cluster. See appropriate INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Disconnect key interlock solenoid connector. Remove screws and key interlock solenoid. (Scheme 26)
Installation (Millenia)
Install key interlock solenoid and tighten screws to 61-112 INCH lbs. (6.9-12.7 N.m). Connect key interlock solenoid connector. Install instrument cluster. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal (Miata)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console and center panel. Remove gearshift indicator panel and lift up. Disconnect switch connector. Remove park position switch. (Scheme 27)
Installation (Miata)
Install park position switch. Connect harness connector. Install gearshift indicator panel. Ensure gearshift handle is in "P" position. Align holes on slider with holes on panel. Tighten screws in crisscross pattern to 18-25 INCH lbs. (2.0-2.9 N.m). Install center panel and rear console. Connect negative battery cable. Check shift interlock system operation. See SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM under DESCRIPTION & OPERATION.

Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove rear console and center panel. Remove gearshift indicator panel and lift up. Disconnect switch connector. Remove park position switch. (Scheme 28)and (Scheme 29).

Install shift lock actuator. Connect park position switch and shift lock actuator connectors. Install gearshift indicator panel. Ensure gearshift handle is in "P" position. Align holes on slider with holes on panel. Tighten screws in crisscross pattern to 18-25 INCH lbs. (2.0-2.9 N.m). Install center panel and rear console. Connect negative battery cable. Check shift interlock system operation. See SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK under TROUBLE SHOOTING.
Removal & Installation (Protege5)
Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove passenger side kick panel. Disconnect harness connector. Unbolt and remove shift lock control unit with cruise control unit. (Scheme 30) To install, reverse removal procedure.
