DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
| WARNING | Vehicle is equipped with Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) system. When servicing vehicle, use care to avoid accidental air bag deployment. SIR system-related components are located in various locations throughout interior and exterior of vehicle, depending on application. Do not use electrical test equipment on or near these circuits. If necessary, deactivate SIR system before servicing components. See AIR BAG DEACTIVATION PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION. |
SYSTEM OPERATION CHECK
- With ignition key removed, ensure gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position. Insert key into ignition switch.
- Turn ignition on. Ensure gearshift lever can only be moved with brake pedal depressed. Move gearshift lever to "R" position.
- Ensure ignition key cannot be removed. Move gearshift lever to "P" position. Ensure ignition key is removable.
- If shift interlock system does not operate as described, inspect suspect component. Repair as necessary. See «COMPONENT TESTS»(ref-143050-S09422707012002082200000). Check gearshift lever and control cable operation.
- Place gearshift lever in "P" position. On Miata, Millenia and Protege5 push down emergency override button on shifter console using a screwdriver, and verify gearshift lever can be moved from "P" position. (Scheme 23)and (Scheme 24). On MPV, push down emergency override button on top of steering column cover. On all models, if gearshift lever cannot be moved from "P" position, replace shift lock actuator.
