KOEO & KOER DTCs
These DTCs indicate faults are present at time of testing. A hard fault may cause CHECK ENGINE or Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) to go on and remain on until fault is repaired. If KOEO or KOER DTCs are retrieved during KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST or KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST, go to appropriate test.
Continuous Memory DTCs
Continuous Memory DTCs are retrieved after performing KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST. Unlike KOEO or KOER self-tests, which can only be activated on-demand, Continuous Memory Self-Test is always active. A fault may or may not be present at time of checking for Continuous Memory DTCs. This self-test is helpful in diagnosing intermittent problems.
After noting and/or repairing fault, clear DTCs from memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . Intermittent faults may be caused by a sensor, connector or wiring-related problem. See TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article
Note. Continuous Memory DTCs should be recorded when retrieved. These DTCs may be used to identify intermittent problems that exist after all KOEO and KOER DTCs have been repaired. Some Continuous Memory DTC faults may not be valid after KOEO and KOER DTCs are serviced.
Pass Codes
SYSTEM PASS indicates no DTCs were recorded in that portion of test. If SYSTEM PASS is not retrieved in KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST, DTCs retrieved during KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST may not be valid.
These DTCs result from information stored by PCM during continuous self-test monitoring. Use these DTCs for diagnosis only when KOEO ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST and KOER ON-DEMAND SELF-TEST result in SYSTEM PASS and all steps under QUICK TEST are successfully completed. These DTCs indicate faults previously recorded. Fault may or may not be currently present.
FREEZE-FRAME DATA
This mode allows access to emission related data values from specific generic PIDs. These values are immediately stored in continuous memory when an emission related fault occurs. This provides a snapshot of the conditions that were present when the fault occurred. Freeze frame will be stored until PCM memory is erased.
VISUAL CHECK
Perform the following, and make all necessary repairs before continuing with QUICK TEST
- Inspect air cleaner and inlet ducts.
- Inspect system wiring harness for proper connections, bent or broken pins, corrosion, loose wires and proper routing.
- Check Powertrain Control Module (PCM), sensors and actuators for physical damage.
- Check engine coolant for proper level and mixture.
- Check transmission fluid level and quality.
VEHICLE PREPARATION & EQUIPMENT HOOKUP
Apply parking brake, and place shift lever in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T) position. Block drive wheels. Turn off all electrical accessories. Ensure engine is at normal operating temperature. If vehicle is equipped with an auxiliary powertrain control system (RPM control), it must be turned off when performing any self-test procedure. Connect appropriate test equipment to vehicle as follows.

Accessing Generic OBD-II PIDs
Turn ignition off. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the following steps
- Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.
- Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.
- Select GENERIC OBD-II OPTIONS. Press CONT button if monitors are not complete.
- Select PID/DATA MONITOR.
- Turn ignition on or start engine and allow to idle.
- Follow operating instructions from scan tool menu.
- Select PIDs and press START to begin monitoring. If PID value is not as specified, perform appropriate SYSTEM TEST.
Accessing EEC-V Specific PIDs
Turn ignition off. Ensure test equipment is properly attached. Program scan tool using the following steps
- Select VEHICLE & ENGINE SELECTION menu.
- Select NEW VEHICLE, YEAR & MODEL.
- Select DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK.
- Select PCM-POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE.
- Select PID/DATA MONITOR & RECORD.
- Turn ignition on or start engine and allow to idle.
- Follow operating instructions from scan tool menu.
- Select PIDs and press START to begin monitoring. If PID value is not as specified, perform appropriate SYSTEM TEST.

- Select GENERIC OBD-II FUNCTIONS. Press CONT button if OBD-II monitors are not complete.
- Turn ignition on.
- Select FREEZE FRAME PID TESTS.
FAILURE MODE EFFECTS MANAGEMENT (FMEM)
FMEM mode allows system operation when sensors fail or transmit signals that are out of normal operating range. During FMEM mode, PCM substitutes a mid-range signal for defective sensor while continuing to monitor sensor. If faulty sensor signals return to normal operating range, PCM will use those signals. Depending on specific failure, a fault code may be set in PCM memory.
DRIVE CYCLES - MIATA & MILLENIA
- Connect scan tool. Start engine. Select GENERIC OBD-II FUNCTIONS. Select ON BOARD SYSTEM READINESS mode. Check OBD-II system check condition. If scan tool displays ALL TESTS ARE COMPLETE, drive cycle procedure does not need to be performed. If scan tool does not display ALL TESTS ARE COMPLETE, go to next step.
- Select PID/DATA MONITOR. Select RFCFLAG and press START. If RFCFLAG status is YES, go to next step. If status is NO, perform «DRIVE CYCLE-MODE 1»(ref-2836-S35150019892000041300000) .
- Select ON BOARD SYSTEM READINESS mode. If EVAPORATIVE PURGE SYSTEM check status is YES, go to next step. If check status is NO, perform «DRIVE CYCLE-MODE 4»(ref-2836-S11743872192000041300000) .
- Select ON BOARD SYSTEM READINESS mode. If EGR SYSTEM check status is YES, go to next step. If check status is NO, perform «DRIVE CYCLE-MODE 2»(ref-2836-S06916415522000041300000) .
- Select ON BOARD SYSTEM READINESS mode. If OXYGEN SENSOR HEATER check status is YES, go to next step. If check status is NO, perform «DRIVE CYCLE-MODE 3»(ref-2836-S15695611212000041300000) .
- Select ON BOARD SYSTEM READINESS mode. If OXYGEN SENSOR check status is YES, go to next step. If check status is NO, perform «DRIVE CYCLE-MODE 3»(ref-2836-S15695611212000041300000) .
- Select ON BOARD SYSTEM READINESS mode. If CATALYST check status is YES, no further procedure is required. If check status is NO, perform «DRIVE CYCLE-MODE 3»(ref-2836-S15695611212000041300000) .
Drive Cycle-Mode 1
Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Ensure all electrical and A/C loads are off. Ensure ignition timing and idle speed are within specification. Adjust as necessary. See BASIC DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES article. Ensure no jumper wires are connected to DLC. Increase engine RPM to specified speed. (Scheme 34) Operate engine at specified RPM for minimum of 15 seconds. Idle engine for more than 20 seconds with cooling fan disabled.

Drive Cycle-Mode 2
Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Ensure all electrical and A/C loads are off. Drive vehicle at specified speed for one minute. (Scheme 35)

Drive Cycle-Mode 3
Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. Ensure all electrical and A/C loads are off. Idle engine for additional 5 minutes. Drive vehicle at specified speed (V1) for one minute. Lower vehicle speed to specified speed (V2) for 3 minutes. (Scheme 36)

Drive Cycle-Mode 4
Ensure following conditions are met
- Engine coolant temperature is 32-95 °F (0-35 °C).
- Intake air temperature is 50-140 °F (10-60 °C).
- Barometric pressure is 72 kPa.
- Fuel gauge needle points within 15-85 percent.
Start and operate engine at 3500 RPM for 200 seconds. Within next 40 seconds, accelerate vehicle to 40-60 MPH (65-96 km/H). Maintain vehicle speed for 6 minutes. (Scheme 37)

DRIVE CYCLES - MPV
Note. Disconnecting battery will reset memory. DO NOT disconnect battery during and after drive cycle procedure. Vehicle speed and engine speed detected by PCM may differ from that indicated by speedometer and tachometer. Check vehicle speed and engine speed during drive cycle procedure using scan tool. If OBD-II system check is not completed during a drive cycle procedure, OBD-II system detects a malfunction or drive cycle was not completed correctly.
Mode 1 (PCM Adaptive Memory)
Check RFC FLAG PID. If PID is on, go to Mode 2. If PID is off, complete Mode 1 before performing Mode 2 or 3. Connect scan tool. Turn all accessories off. Start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Ensure idle speed and timing are within specification. With vehicle in Park, raise engine speed to 2000-3000 RPM for more than 15 seconds. Raise engine speed to 4000-5000 RPM for more than 15 seconds. Release throttle and allow to idle for more than 20 seconds after cooling fan has stopped. Turn igintion off. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If cycle is not complete, repeat cycle from engine start.
Mode 2 (EGR Verification)
Connect scan tool. Check RFC FLAG PID. If PID is off, complete Mode 1 before performing Mode 2. If PID is on, start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Drive vehicle at 49-57 MPH in Drive for at least one minute. Stop vehicle. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If cycle is not complete, turn ignition off. Repeat test. If cycle is complete, check test results. If results are okay, ensure no DTCs are present. If results are not okay, repairs are not complete.
Mode 3 (HO2S/TWC Verification)
Connect scan tool. Check RFC FLAG PID. If PID is off, complete Mode 1 before performing Mode 3. If PID is on, start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Drive vehicle for at least 5 minutes. Drive vehicle at more than 40 MPH in Drive for one minute. Drive vehicle at 45-55 MPH in Drive for 3 minutes. Stop vehicle. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If cycle is not complete, turn ignition off. Repeat test. If cycle is complete, check test results. If results are okay, ensure no DTCs are present. If results are not okay, repairs are not complete.
Mode 4 (EVAP Verification)
Note. If Mode 4 cannot be performed, perform EVAP SYSTEM TEST. See appropriate SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
Connect scan tool. Ensure BARO is 21.3 in. Hg. or more, IAT PID is 14-131°F (-10-55°C) and FTL V PID is 1.1-3.0 volts. Ensure ECT PID is 14-72°F (-10-22°C) Turn all accessories off. Start engine. Raise engine speed to 3500 RPM for 200 seconds to warm engine. Release throttle and allow to idle. Drive vehicle immediately. Accelerate from idle to 40-60 MPH within 20 seconds. Ensure 40-60 MPH is reached within 4 minutes of initial start.. Drive vehicle steadily at 40-60 MPH for at least 2 minutes. Stop vehicle and allow to idle. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If test is not complete, turn ignition off and repeat test. If test is complete, check test results. If results are okay, ensure no DTCs are present. If results are not okay, repairs are not complete.
DRIVE CYCLES - PROTEGE
Note. Disconnecting battery will reset memory. DO NOT disconnect battery during and after drive cycle procedure. Vehicle speed and engine speed detected by PCM may differ from that indicated by speedometer and tachometer. Check vehicle speed and engine speed during drive cycle procedure using scan tool. If OBD-II system check is not completed during a drive cycle procedure, OBD-II system detects a malfunction or drive cycle was not completed correctly.
Check RFC FLAG PID. If PID is on, go to Mode 2. If PID is off, complete Mode 1 before performing Mode 2 or 3. Connect scan tool. Turn all accessories off. Start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Ensure idle speed and timing are within specification. With vehicle in Park or neutral, raise engine speed to 2300-2700 RPM for more than 15 seconds. Raise engine speed to 3800-4200 RPM for more than 15 seconds. Release throttle and allow to idle for 20 seconds. Ensure cooling fan does not operate during idle portion of cycle. Turn igintion off. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If cycle is not complete, repeat cycle from engine start.
Connect scan tool. Check RFC FLAG PID. If PID is off, complete Mode 1 before performing Mode 2 or 3. If PID is on, start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Drive vehicle at 50-60 MPH (in Drive for A/T, 5th for M/T) for at least one minute. Stop vehicle. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If cycle is not complete, turn ignition off. Repeat test. If cycle is complete, check test results. If results are okay, ensure no DTCs are present. If results are not okay, repairs are not complete.
Connect scan tool. Check RFC FLAG PID. If PID is off, complete Mode 1 before performing Mode 2 or 3. If PID is on, start engine. Allow engine to reach operating temperature. Turn all accessories off. Drive vehicle for at least 5 minutes. Drive vehicle at more than 50 MPH (in Drive for A/T, 5th for M/T) for one minute.Drive vehicle at 40-60 MPH (in Drive for A/T, 5th for M/T) for 3 minutes. Stop vehicle. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If cycle is not complete, turn ignition off. Repeat test. If cycle is complete, check test results. If results are okay, ensure no DTCs are present. If results are not okay, repairs are not complete.
Connect scan tool. Ensure BARO is 21.3 in. Hg. or more, IAT PID is 50-140°F (10-60°C) and FTL V PID is 0.5-2.5 volts. Ensure ECT PID is 14-72°F. If BARO PID is more, upper limit for ECT is more (BARO PID of 25.1 in. Hg. equals 90°F ECT limit). Turn all accessories off. Start engine. Raise engine speed to 3500 RPM for 200 seconds. Release throttle and allow to idle. Drive vehicle immediately. Accelerate from idle to 40-60 MPH within 20 seconds. Ensure 40-60 MPH is reached within 4 minutes of initial start.. Drive vehicle steadily at 40-60 MPH for at least 2 minutes. Stop vehicle and allow to idle. Using scan tool, check drive mode completion status. If test is not complete, turn ignition off and repeat test. If test is complete, check test results. If results are okay, ensure no DTCs are present. If results are not okay, repairs are not complete.
SUMMARY
If no diagnostic trouble code is present but driveability problem still exists, proceed to TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article for symptom diagnosis or intermittent diagnostic procedures.
