Note. The oil pan could contain small chips, shavings, and other particles helpful in checking the condition of the transmission and diagnosing certain problems. To ensure that all foreign particles stay in the oil pan, make sure that the transmission is never tipped completely over while the oil pan is still installed.

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission fluid. Oil pan must be removed to drain fluid. See «DRAINING & REFILLING»(ref-2430-S16372730042000031800000) in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article. Disconnect speedometer cable and electrical connections. (Scheme 272)or (Scheme 273). Remove front exhaust pipe and heat shield.
  2. Mark front (if equipped) and rear drive shaft flanges for reassembly reference. Remove drive shaft(s). Install plug in rear of transmission to prevent fluid leakage. Remove shift linkage or selector cable. Remove dipstick tube. It may only be necessary to remove the upper portion of the dip stick tube. Remove torque converter undercover and torque converter bolts. Remove starter. NOTE: On 4WD models, to aid in the removal of the transmission it may be necessary to remove the pinion flange from the front differential. See «FRONT DIFFERENTIAL OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT (MPV)»(ref-125468-S01247377002004112200000) under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in DIFFERENTIALS & DRIVE AXLES article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  3. Remove exhaust pipe bracket and engine-to-transmission gusset plates (if equipped). (Scheme 272)or (Scheme 273). Disconnect transmission oil cooler lines. Remove vacuum pipe (if equipped). Support transmission using jack. Remove transmission mounting bolts, and slowly remove transmission.
  1. To install transmission, reverse removal procedure. Torque converter is correctly seated when distance between engine mating surface of converter housing and face of converter is 1.18"(30 mm).
  2. Tighten bolts to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS (MPV)»(ref-2432-S38403173172000031800000) . Fill transmission with required amount of fluid, and check for external leaks. See «LUBRICATION»(ref-2430-S01351509852000031800000) in AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SERVICING article.
