VARIABLE TUMBLE SHUTTER VALVE POSITION SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe variable tumble shutter valve position sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the variable tumble shutter valve position sensor, replace it together with the variable tumble shutter valve actuator as a single unit.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fresh-air duct and air cleaner as a single unit. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517447-S10648211572012121200000).)
  3. Disconnect the variable tumble shutter valve actuator connector.
  4. Verify terminal A value (variable tumble shutter valve position sensor output voltage) when battery voltage is applied to terminal B or D. (Scheme 24): Identifying Variable Tumble Shutter Valve Position Sensor Connector Terminals Applied to terminal Variable tumble shutter valve position sensor output terminal D B A B+ Ground Below 1.0 Ground B+ B+ If there is any malfunction, replace the variable tumble shutter valve actuator. ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE (ECT) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

WARNINGWhen the engine is hot, it can badly burn. Turn off the engine and wait until it is cool before removing the ECT sensor.

Scheme 25: ECT Sensor No.1 Inspection
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain the engine coolant. (See «COOLING SYSTEM SERVICE WARNINGS [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517443-S24528265092012121200000).)
  3. Remove the battery. (See «BATTERY REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517452-S26026055392012121200000).)
  4. Disconnect the ECT sensor No.1 connector.
  5. Remove the ECT sensor No.1. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).)
  6. Place the ECT sensor No.1 in water with a thermometer, and heat the water gradually.
  7. Measure the resistance between the ECT sensor No.1 terminals using an ohmmeter. (Scheme 25): Identifying ECT Sensor No.1 Connector Terminals If not as specified, replace the ECT sensor No.1. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).)

MASS AIR FLOW (MAF) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe MAF sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the MAF sensor, replace it together with the IAT sensor as a single unit.

Scheme 26
  1. Verify the connection condition of the MAF sensor/IAT sensor connector. If a connector has poor contact, install it correctly and then go to the next step. If the connector connection is normal, go to the next step.
  2. Verify the MAF sensor voltage under no airflow conditions using the following procedure: Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2. CAUTION: Do not create suction in the exhaust pipe by cranking the engine and causing air to flow through the exhaust duct. It could cause a measurement error because the MAF sensor voltage is measured under no airflow conditions. Switch the ignition to ON (engine off) and wait for 30 s. Verify that the MAF/IAT sensor output voltage (PID: MAF). Specification 0.65 V If it is the specification or more, replace the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).) If it is less than the specification, go to the next step.
  3. Remove the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).)
  4. Verify that there is no foreign matter in the MAF/IAT sensor. Shine light on the sensor (Direction A in figure below) in the flow path and verify visually. If there is visible, large foreign matter, replace the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).) If there is no foreign matter, go to the next step. (Scheme 26): Identifying No Foreign Matter In MAF/IAT Sensor Area
  5. Verify that there is no damage, cracks, or dirt on the MAF sensor part of the MAD/IAT sensor. If a malfunction can be verified, repair or replace the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).) If a malfunction cannot be verified, go to the next step (MAF sensor is normal). NOTE: Install the removed MAF/IAT sensor because the MAF sensor is normal.
  6. Install the MAF/IAT sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000).)

INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE (IAT) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe IAT sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the IAT sensor, replace it together with the MAF sensor as a single unit.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the MAF/IAT sensor connector.
  3. Verify that the resistance between terminals D and E is within the specification. (Scheme 27): Identifying MAF/IAT Sensor Connector Terminals If not within the specification, replace the MAF/IAT sensor. Scheme 28: MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fresh-air duct and the air cleaner as a single unit. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517447-S10648211572012121200000).)
  3. Disconnect the MAP sensor connector.
  4. Remove the MAP sensor (Scheme 28): Identifying MAP Sensor
  5. Install in the reverse order of removal.

MANIFOLD ABSOLUTE PRESSURE (MAP) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the voltage (M-MDS PID: MAP) within the specification. (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S26329800452012121200000) .) If not as specified, replace the MAP sensor.(See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)

BAROMETRIC PRESSURE (BARO) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe BARO sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the BARO sensor, replace it together with the PCM as a single unit.
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the BARO sensor output voltage (M-MDS PID: BARO) is within the specification. (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S26329800452012121200000) .) If not as specified, replace the PCM. (See «PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S28439964162012121200000) .)

THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThis inspection procedure cannot be completed correctly if the APP sensor has a malfunction. Before performing this procedure, verify that any one of the DTCs related to the APP sensor is not detected. The TP sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the TP sensor, replace it together with the throttle body as a single unit.
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the TP sensor output voltage (M-MDS PID: TP1, TP2) is within the specification. (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S26329800452012121200000) .) If not as specified, replace the throttle body. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517447-S10648211572012121200000) .)

ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION (APP) SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe APP sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the APP sensor, replace it together with the accelerator pedal as a single unit.
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the APP sensor output voltage (PID: APP1, APP2) increases according to the increase in the accelerator opening angle when the accelerator opening angle is gradually increased. If verified, go to the next step. If not as verified, replace the accelerator pedal. (See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517447-S28626269622012121200000) .)
  4. Verify that the APP sensor output voltage (PID: APP1, APP2) is within the specification when the accelerator pedal is depressed and not depressed. If not as specified, replace the accelerator pedal. (See «ACCELERATOR PEDAL REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517447-S28626269622012121200000) .)

Visual Inspection

  1. Remove the CKP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)
  2. Verify that there are no metal shavings on the sensor. If there is a malfunction, replace the CKP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)
  3. Install the CKP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)

Scheme 29

Scheme 29: Air Gap Inspection
  1. Verify that the CKP sensor is securely installed.
  2. Using a thickness gauge, measure the air gap between the plate projections at the back of crankshaft pulley and the CKP sensor. (Scheme 29): Measuring CKP Sensor Air Gap If not within the specification, inspect the plate projections for cracks or bending. If not within the specification, replace the crankshaft pulley. (See «FRONT OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517441-S32707141322012121200000).) Air gap 0.5-1.5 mm {0.02-0.05 in}

Voltage Inspection

CAUTIONWater penetrating the connector will cause sensor malfunction. To prevent this, be careful not to damage the wiring harnesses or the waterproof connector so as to cause water penetration.
  1. Idle the engine.
  2. Measure the crankshaft position signal and verify that rectangular waves are produced. (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S26329800452012121200000) .)
  3. If not as specified, replace the CKP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)
  1. Remove the CMP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)
  2. Verify that there are no metal shavings on the sensor. If there is a malfunction, replace the CMP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)
  3. Install the CMP sensor. (See «VARIABLE VALVE TIMING ACTUATOR REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S16064826082012121200000) .)

Scheme 30

Scheme 30: KNOCK SENSOR (KS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the intake manifold. (See «INTAKE-AIR SYSTEM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517447-S10648211572012121200000).)
  3. Disconnect the KS connector.
  4. Remove the KS using the SST. (Scheme 30): Knock Sensor And Special Tool With Torque Specifications
  5. Install in the reverse order of removal.

Scheme 31

Scheme 31: KNOCK SENSOR (KS) INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]
  1. Disconnect the KS connector.
  2. Measure resistance between KS terminal and body ground. (Scheme 31): Identifying Knock Sensor Connector Terminals If not as specified, replace the KS. (See «KNOCK SENSOR (KS) REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S18326059832012121200000).) KS resistance 532-588 kilohms [20°C{68°F}]

FUEL TANK PRESSURE SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe fuel tank pressure sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the fuel tank pressure sensor, replace it together with the evaporative hose component as a single unit.
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
  2. Switch the ignition to ON.
  3. Verify that the Fuel tank pressure sensor output voltage (M-MDS PID: FTP) is within the specification. (See «PCM INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S26329800452012121200000) .) If not as specified, replace the evaporative hose component.

PCM TEMPERATURE SENSOR INSPECTION [MZR 1.5]

CAUTIONThe PCM temperature sensor cannot be removed as a single unit. When replacing the PCM temperature sensor, replace it together with the PCM as a single unit.
  1. Connect the M-MDS to the DLC-2.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  3. Select PCM_T on the M-MDS.
  4. Verify that the PCM_T PID temperature is within the specification. If not as verified, replace the PCM. (See «PCM REMOVAL/INSTALLATION [MZR 1.5]»(ref-517439-S28439964162012121200000) .) PCM temperature sensor specification -30 -110°C {-22-230 °F}
