Scheme 358: PROCEDURE
  1. CHECK ANY OTHER DTCS OUTPUT Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Turn the engine switch on (IG). Turn the Techstream on. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Trouble Codes. Read the DTCs. Result Result Proceed to DTC P0607 and P0136, P0137, P0138, P0156, P0157 or P0158 are output A DTC P0607 is output B B --> See step 3 A: Go to next step
  2. INSPECT DTC (P0136, P0137, P0138, P0156, P0157 OR P0158) Inspect the P0136, P0137, P0138, P0156, P0157 or P0158 flowchart. HINT: If P0136 or P0156 is output, troubleshoot for that DTC first. Refer to «INSPECTION PROCEDURE»(ref-400797-S22924944162011051800000) . Then proceed to "INSPECT ECM" 6 . If P0137 or P0157 is output, troubleshoot for that DTC first. FAIL-SAFE

When either of these DTCs, as well as other DTCs relating to electronic throttle control system malfunctions is stored, the ECM enters fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 6° throttle angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing, in accordance with the accelerator pedal opening angle, to allow the vehicle to continue running at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly.

Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected, and the engine switch is then turned off.

During fail-safe mode, the ECM cuts the current to the throttle actuator, and the throttle valve is returned to a 6° throttle angle by the return spring. The ECM then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing, in accordance with the accelerator pedal opening angle, to allow the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed. If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and gently, the vehicle can be driven slowly. Fail-safe mode continues until a pass condition is detected, and the engine switch is then turned off.

The accelerator pedal sensor assembly has 2 (main and sub) sensor circuits. If a malfunction occurs in either of the sensor circuits, the ECM detects the abnormal signal voltage difference between the 2 sensor circuits and switches to limp mode. In limp mode, the functioning circuit is used to calculate the accelerator pedal angle to allow the vehicle to continue driving. If both circuits malfunction, the ECM regards the angle of the accelerator pedal as being fully closed. In this case, the throttle valve remains closed as if the engine is idling. If a pass condition is detected and then the engine switch is turned off, the fail-safe operation stops and the system returns to a normal condition.

  5. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (OUTPUT VOLTAGE OF AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3. Start the engine. Turn the Techstream on. Warm up the air fuel ratio sensor at an engine speed of 2500 rpm for 90 seconds. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Data List / A/F Control System / AFS Voltage B1S1 or AFS Voltage B2S1 and Engine Speed. Check the air fuel ratio sensor voltage 3 times, when the engine is in each of the following conditions: While idling (check for at least 30 seconds) (Step "A") At an engine speed of approximately 2500 rpm (without any sudden changes in engine speed) (Step "B") The engine speed is raised to 4000 rpm and then the accelerator pedal is quickly released so that the throttle valve is fully closed (Step "C"). Standard Condition Air Fuel Ratio Sensor Voltage Variation Reference Step "A" and "B" Changes at approximately 3.3 V Between 3.1 V and 3.4 V Step "C" Increases to 3.8 V or more This occurs during engine deceleration (when fuel cut performed) HINT: For more information, see the diagrams below. If the output voltage of the air fuel ratio sensor remains at approximately 3.3 V (see Malfunction Condition diagram above) under any conditions, including those above, the air fuel ratio sensor may have an open circuit. (This will also happen if the air fuel ratio sensor heater has an open circuit.) If the output voltage of the air fuel ratio sensor remains at either approximately 3.8 V or more, or 2.8 V or less (see Malfunction Condition diagram see scheme 98 ) under any conditions, including those above, the air fuel ratio sensor may have a short circuit. The ECM stops fuel injection (fuel cut) during engine deceleration. This causes a lean condition and results in a momentary increase in the air fuel ratio sensor output voltage. The ECM must establish a closed throttle valve position learning value to perform fuel cut. If the battery terminal has been reconnected, the vehicle must be driven over 10 mph (16 km/h) to allow the ECM to learn the closed throttle valve position. When the vehicle is driven: The output voltage of the air fuel ratio sensor may be below 2.8 V during fuel enrichment. For the vehicle, this translates to a sudden increase in speed with the accelerator pedal fully depressed when trying to overtake another vehicle. The air fuel ratio sensor is functioning normally. The air fuel ratio sensor is a current output element; therefore, the current is converted into a voltage inside the ECM. Measuring the voltage at the connectors of the air fuel ratio sensor or ECM will show a constant voltage result. NG --> See step 9 OK: Go to next step
