Installation
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply grease to center flexible bushing in ends of drive shaft before installing. Ensure drive shaft flange reference marks are aligned. Use NEW gaskets and nuts when installing catalytic converters on exhaust manifolds. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49513-S34527251092001011500000) . CAUTION: Ensure crossmember, located below transmission, is installed with front mark arrow pointing toward front of vehicle. Front mark arrow is located in center of crossmember, on bottom side of crossmember. Install drive shaft center bearing so bracket on drive shaft center bearing is parallel to drive shaft.
- Adjust control cables. Fill crankcase with engine oil. Fill and bleed cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-49513-S07553328822001011500000) .

- Remove air intake pipe from between air cleaner hose and throttle body. Remove coolant reservoir and radiator. Remove generator. Remove power steering pipe-to-crossmember clamps. Remove power steering fluid reservoir and power steering pump with hoses attached and secure aside.
- Remove A/C compressor with hoses attached and secure aside. Remove charcoal canister. Remove clips and lower cover from passenger's side of instrument panel. (Scheme 12)
- Remove screws, lower finish panel and glove compartment. (Scheme 12) Remove scuff plate on passenger's side. Lift carpet upward to access Engine Control Module (ECM) located on passenger-side floor panel. Remove nuts and ECM cover.
- Remove nut and lift ECM upward. Disconnect necessary electrical connections so engine wiring can be pulled out through firewall. (Scheme 12) Remove clamps and nuts, and pull engine wiring through firewall.
- Remove front exhaust pipe, located between catalytic converters on exhaust manifolds and rear exhaust pipe. Remove catalytic converters from exhaust manifolds.
- Remove rear exhaust pipes and mufflers to access drive shaft. Remove exhaust pipe heat insulator. Remove center floor crossmember braces from beneath drive shaft.
- Paint reference mark on drive shaft flanges at transmission and rear differential flange for reassembly reference. Remove drive shaft center bearing bolts and adjusting washers (if equipped). Adjusting washers are located between drive shaft center bearing and the frame.
- Remove drive shaft flange bolts. Push drive shaft toward front of vehicle until drive shaft clears centering pin located in center of differential flange. Remove front and rear drive shafts as an assembly. CAUTION: DO NOT remove flange-to-drive shaft bolts. Only bolts holding flanges together should be removed. DO NOT separate drive shafts.
- Disconnect shift control rod at transmission. Support transmission with floor jack. Note direction of installation of crossmember located below transmission for reassembly reference. Remove bolts/nuts and crossmember located below transmission. Support engine with hoist. Remove engine mount-to-crossmember nuts. Lift engine and transmission as an assembly from vehicle.
- To install, reverse removal procedure. Apply grease to center flexible bushing in ends of drive shaft before installing. Ensure drive shaft flange reference marks are aligned. Tighten fasteners to specification. See «TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS»(ref-49513-S34527251092001011500000) . CAUTION: Install drive shaft center bearing so bracket on drive shaft center bearing is parallel to drive shaft.
- Adjust control cables. Fill crankcase with engine oil. Fill and bleed cooling system. See «COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING»(ref-49513-S07553328822001011500000) .
- Release fuel pressure. See «FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE»(ref-49513-S25187987292001011500000). Ensure negative battery cable is disconnected. Drain cooling system. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprockets. See «TIMING BELT»(ref-49513-S40848233742001011500000).
- Remove throttle body cover. Disconnect necessary control cables, electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from throttle body. Remove bolts and right ignition coil. (Scheme 13)
- Remove power steering pump with hoses attached and secure aside. Remove front exhaust pipe from between catalytic converters on exhaust manifolds and rear exhaust pipe. Remove catalytic converters from exhaust manifolds.
- Disconnect necessary electrical connections, coolant hoses and vacuum hoses. Remove coolant inlet housing and "O" ring from water pump. (Scheme 13) Remove bolts and timing belt rear plates from cylinder head.
- Remove vacuum pipe, vacuum switching valves and Idle Air Control (IAC) valve. Remove EGR pipe, EGR valve and modulator. Remove EGR valve adapter. (Scheme 13)
- On SC400, remove coolant vacuum control valve mounted on firewall. Remove union bolt and gaskets, and disconnect cold start injector fuel line from delivery pipe (if equipped). On all models, remove throttle body.
- Remove bolts/nuts, air intake chamber and gaskets. On SC400, remove bolts, cold start injector and cold start injector fuel line. On all models, remove engine wiring and brackets.
- Disconnect necessary coolant hoses. Disconnect fuel lines and pipes for removal of delivery pipe. Remove nuts, delivery pipe with injectors, spacers and insulators. CAUTION: DO NOT allow injectors to fall from delivery pipe when removing from intake manifold.
- Remove bolts/nuts, intake manifold and gaskets. Remove front and rear coolant by-pass housings. (Scheme 13) Remove engine and transmission oil dipsticks, dipstick tubes and "O" rings. Disconnect oxygen sensors.
- Remove wiring and brackets to access valve covers. Remove bolts, seal washers, valve covers and gaskets. Remove semi-circular plug from rear of cylinder head (if necessary). To avoid valve/piston interference, rotate crankshaft so timing mark points toward No. 2 idler pulley. (Scheme 14) Remove camshafts. See «CAMSHAFT»(ref-49513-S06776582292001011500000). CAUTION: Cylinder head bolts must be loosened in proper sequence to prevent cylinder head warpage. Use care when removing cylinder head bolts, as not to drop washers on cylinder head bolts into the engine.
- Loosen cylinder head bolts in sequence using several steps. (Scheme 15) Remove cylinder head bolts, washers, cylinder head and cylinder head gasket. NOTE: If cylinder head removal is difficult, carefully pry between cylinder head and projected area near front of cylinder block. DO NOT damage sealing surfaces on cylinder block and cylinder head.
